How to turn on Siri on macOS without sending your Contacts to Apple
Even if there's some advantage to doing this, do we know that a subsequent macOS update would then sync your contacts to Apple, give that Siri would be enabled before the update?
Apple routinely turns on some setting when doing various updates. This is possibly because they ship OSs with some things enabled that some users don't want, so they turn them off. A subsequent update ships setting same as when Apple had them in the initial update, so they're "reenabled", to the ire of the user.
There are files I've deselected to be synced with iCloud, but syncing was enabled via an update. I disabled that, scrubbed iCould of the files (and maybe they're still there somehow) and very recently discovered iC had a bunch more of the docs. I had to disable syncing again, and scrub the files.
So Apple is not bound to trust your choices. They reset to boiler plate updates and it's up to you to fix what they 'fix'. -
New Apple Studio Display rumors: MiniLED, ProMotion, and more
The Studio Display is a much better version of my older 27" Apple display. Even so it's still a 27" display. A $300 discount isn't even enough to make me bite. I want a little larger display maybe 32". It could be closer in specs to the Studio Display than the XDR and closer in price. That's what I want. -
Apple updates iPad Air with faster M3 processor
melgross said:Folks, this is the air. It’s a much cheaper tablet than the pro. What do you expect, a product with equal specs to a much more expensive model? This is a pretty good chip, with a good performance increase over the last model. Stop whining!
I like seeing Apple bring out updated products but fully realize that if I buy a product I'll have it for quite awhile. I usually won't be considering new gear until at least a third generation. I definitely wouldn't be thinking an Air line should be on par with their Pro line. I'll be looking at the iPP and iPmini when they next debut. That'll be four generations over what I have now.
This IPA will be a good upgrade for a lot of people just not everybody. Really what any one iteration of just about any product is good for everyone. -
New M4 MacBook Air could debut on Wednesday
I've got a 15" M3 MBA and can't see any reason to upgrade, unless Tim himself offered to swap straight across. Our machines on many fronts have pretty much plateaued, so incremental updates don't do much for anyone who's bought a recent machine. But somebody with an M2 MBA might appreciated the M4 update. That's reason enough for Apple to do the incremental thing.
There was a time when we could count on an upgrade providing more RAM, more storage, a CPU bump, and maybe GPU bump for the same money we paid for an earlier version, less equipped. I don't know that this happens nearly as much. -
President Trump is irritated about Apple not completely killing DEI initiatives

I also love the hypocrisy around the federal role in education.
On one hand, let's eliminate the federal government's role in education, leaving it to the states, by dismantling the Department of Education.
On the other hand, let's micromanage how every college in the country does anything by threatening to take away their federal funding.
Trump's Rule of Bias and Whim tantrums won't end until he's out of office. But we'll still be subject to and dealing with the chaos and racism he's enabled and promotes.
IF absolute power is wrested from Trump and Musk, there will be at least a decade of cleanup needed. This assumes that he or Musk don't bankrupt the government. or start some irrevocable action involving US safety. He's said Ukraine started that war, not aware of his buddy Putin invading a sovereign country. I fully expect him to hand the Ukraine over to Putin in any way he can.
Not enough people who voted for him or sat out the election realize how dangerous he is by accident and design. There's a chance to regain control in '26, but I believe inertia will be too strong in too many people.
