Instagram being blamed for iPhone 15 overheating issues
CheeseFreeze said:soundsinmotion said:CheeseFreeze said:big kc said:darkvader said:So, the same version of the same app isn't a problem on earlier iPhones or iOS versions. But it's somehow that app's fault?Nope. This is on Apple.
Apple designs and builds the SoC, the thermal system, the outer casing, the operating system, the APIs, and is the gatekeeper for every application that runs on an iPhone – and yet the company still blames third party developers?
How is it even possible that any of these applications can cause unexpected overheating in the first place, and how, if the App Store review process is put in place to protect users, did nobody at Apple catch this during the review process? No, this is on Apple and not a third-party developer.
On an engineering level I a background in C++, Unity, and web related languages such as PHP, NodeJS and the likes, although I am closely working with engineering experts nowadays who are obviously masters at their respective fields. Products I am involved in range from apps to 3D experiences, API creation and systems design.I still as of today work directly with a very talented engineer who was my 2nd hire over a 12 years ago who has knowledge of coding operating systems. I learned a lot from him.Regardless of the above, your one-line response is not dissimilar to Jeffrey Lebowski’s “well, uh, that’s like your opinion, man.”.The operating system’s set of rules and systems such as the kernel take precedence over the apps that run on that operating system. Apps run in a container and may demand a lot of power, but it’s the operating system that grants them this or not. This is super basic stuff and the fact you don’t see the very obvious tells me you are not the engineer here, and if so, you are a junior at best, but more likely an intern. -
Every iPhone screen has a barcode to prevent a manufacturing scam
darkvader said:danox said:Don’t worry, they’ll have to do the same thing in India and Vietnam too. And probably for almost everything else they make in China or anywhere else, a lot of those etching and markings/codes that Apple puts on all of their devices that are manufactured overseas are probably there for many of the same reasons, they’re not just there to make Lou Rossmann cry iFixit.Louis Rossmann does not care AT ALL about barcodes. What he (and I, and you should) care about is the ability to repair devices. There is NO EXCUSE for screens not to be swappable between iPhones and functionality to be broken. Apple intentionally breaking compatibility should be criminal conduct. If there's a legitimate reason that calibration is necessary (there isn't, but if there was) then the tool to do the calibration should be made available to the public or somebody at Apple should go to jail. There's no excuse for Apple's bad behavior. -
EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals

Still workable though, but the public can’t keep rejecting it. -
Apple FineWoven case review: Not the leather replacement we were hoping for
williamh said:I saw the finewoven case at the Pentagon City Apple Store on Friday and it seemed not that high quality and overpriced. I'd prefer the silicone case to finewoven.
Honestly asking, what is the environmental issue with the leather case? The leather cases are reusing the wrapping from my beef, it's not like cows are produced to use for iPhone cases and the meat is an afterthought is it? Is the process of making the leather and using it worse than just composting the cow hides? What is it? I know my tone might seem snarky but seriously isn't there just an enormous amount of cowhide out there? Wouldn't an iPhone case be better than tossing it? -
Does your Mac, iPad, or iPhone make the cut for 'Death Stranding Director's Cut?'
Marvin said:M68000 said:I casually looked at this article. But, wondering does this mean it only runs on the newest iphone 15 pro models?
Maybe they will drop the texture size to come in around 20GB.
The iPhone 15 isn't much faster than 14 (20% faster GPU) so the 14 might be able to run it but they will likely target 720p/30 on iPhone. iPhone 14 Pro would run it at 25 FPS. The iPhone 15 Pro also has 8GB RAM vs 6GB on iPhone 14. The PC minimum requirements are 8GB RAM + 4GB VRAM.
Apple could start getting into promos with games. Some hardware manufacturers give games away with new purchases. Apple will probably sell 20m+ of the Pro models, they could gift a $20 game like Death Stranding or RE4. Nvidia and AMD do this:
