  • Apple says hidden Safari setting led to flawed Consumer Reports MacBook Pro battery tests

Here's the setting I think they are talking about. Would be good to know why CR turned it on. Probably to simulate real usage of the user visiting different websites. Need more info on this icon bug they are talking about to understand why it affected it, doesn't even say what icons they are talking about. I suppose if the icon bug caused 100% cpu use then yeh that would be a serious problem.

This setting is used when testing page reload times to reflect modem, cpu, and download speeds without using the cache, which would be much faster and less resource consuming.

  • AT&T launches DirecTV Now streaming service with free Apple TV offer

For those who are confused, DirecTV Now streams LIVE TV and is NOT an on demand service. Thus it is similar to regular cable, satellite and over-the-air service, not on demand services like Netflix, Hulu+, et al. As for DVR, go out and buy one having in/out HDMI as well as support for 75-ohm cable input for over-the-air, cable and satellite services.

The parts I like best about the AT&T service is the single-sign-on capabilities, the fact I can use my iOS devices (though my iPad is wifi only) AND I can watch on my laptop (for when my wife watches her cooking show on TV,  I can catch up on the episodes I've missed.

Plus I can get that new AppleTV-4  I was planning to buy to supplement the AppleTV-3 I currently have!

Now, how to convince the wife that we REALLY, REALLY need this expense.

  • Mirai-based DDoS attack highlights benefits of Apple's secure HomeKit platform

People are going to keep buying crap kit based upon the price and not the security.
This DDOS is only the beginning. There will be more and bigger events before anything is done to improve security.
This is a disaster waiting to happen. To the general public it won't matter if Apple are secure or not, all IOT thingamyjibs will be tarred with the same brush.

There are millions of devices in transit from China. The vast majority will be totally insecure.

I am beginning to wonder if this is the beginning of the end of the internet as we know it.
With millions and millions and millions of devices working together in a DDOS event short of pulling the plug on every home router you can't stop it in a month of sundays.

Some of us have made a stand against all IOT devices Homekit or not. None will be connected to any network I have any control over for the forseeable future.
And they will continue to buy cheap kit and continue to use the cheap kit they already have until some law enforcement authority breaks down their door and arrests the user for contributing to a terrorist organization. Or those companies with deep pockets affected by such DDoS attacks and other attacks take these idiots to court and have their names run through the media before being heavily fined by the courts for said contribution to hacking activities, being that intent does not have to be proved under the DCMA.

  • Apple fires dozens of Project Titan employees as autonomous car initiative shifts to underlying tec

    cali said:
This sounds very un-Apple. WTF is going on?

Why would they license tech and not develop their own product?
Apple excels at the combination of hardware, software and services. If they don't think they can create that magic here I think they should shut the whole thing down. All the big car companies are far down the road of autonomous and self driving vehicles. Even Uber is testing vehicles. What do they need Apple for? To provide a nice looking dashboard UI?

What confuses me is if Apple has decided to shift focus to providing software to existing manufacturers why did Cook put a former hardware executive in charge of the project?
Because you need someone who knows the current state-of-the-art in Lidar/Radar/IR engine, transmission and braking sensors and activators for the software to control. Simulation can only get you so far. You eventually need the software to actually interface with specific hardware, test it, certify it, then have the car manufacturer integrate it and put a body on it.

  • Turkey's deputy PM encourages Apple to move in wake of EU tax ruling

Yeah right. First the 13 members of the EC are to be richer by 1 billion Euros each, and now a would-be dictator wants the richest corporation in the world to move to his country so he can get his personal 1 billion, too. Stay where you are, Apple. Better chance the the intelligent Irish will give the EC the finger and follow Britain out of the EU.
