  • Mystery Apple chip discovered in iMac Pro teardown not A10 Fusion coprocessor [u]

    Guys.
What is wrong with a MBP with an external GPU?
Is there a reason I don’t know to why they aren’t so popular.
For me, the biggest rub is you can't drive the eGPU horsepower to the MBP's internal Retina display. And because the only Retina-caliber monitors out there are LG UltraFine models that connect via USB-C and TB3, you can't use those with any eGPU rigs at the moment either, because graphics cards use legacy inputs like HDMI. So eGPU+MBP is fine for a dual-monitor setup, or with a VR headset, but I think dual monitors diminish the appeal of the Touch Bar.

Apple is getting back into the display market, so I imagine we'll see some Retina-caliber displays that connect over TB3, and maybe even have their own integrated eGPUs. Toss in an external Magic Keyboard with Touch Bar, and I'm in -- but I might be asking for too much in 2018.

Only because it's listed I'll mention it, I put more hours into my Nintendo Switch than any other device right now other than my MBP, and potentially my Echos (all grouped together), but the Echo use should potentially be considered more passive as I make a request and then it executes it for hours, like "Alexa, play my Spotify housecleaning playlist."

This new Zelda game is beyond amazing and ridiculously large.
Breath of the Wild is a stunning achievement on virtually every level. Considering the relatively low horsepower of the Switch as compared to an iPad (or Apple TV), it makes me both frustrated for the current state of iOS games, and hopeful that things will improve in the future. In terms of graphics alone, Breath of the Wild shows how excellent art design can overcome the limitations of "low end" hardware. And Super Mario Odyssey is just a joy to play as well. Good stuff.

  • iOS apps on macOS would bring hope for Apple Watch, Apple Health support on Mac

I would be quite happy if my Health and HomeKit data could be synced and backed up locally. I prefer to set up my iPhones as new but doing so currently means I would lose all that Health data history.

I’ve been waiting for Apple to allow that data to be synced back to a new iPhone or restored iPhone without performing a complete restore. Some issues require a reinstall of iOS and not a restore from backup. In that case any Health data gets lost. That kinda sucks, for me.

Mid be happy even if it didn’t sync with my Mac but could be restored separately.
Health data syncing/backup issues are because of security concerns, which, admittedly, are a technical hurdle Apple would have to overcome to allow watch sync and setup syncing with other devices. Maybe the solution is making the watch hardware itself the “home” for all health data. You could view it on a Mac securely as long as the watch is within range and unlocked. But without your watch on and nearby, the data would be inaccessible. The other data — apps, messages, etc. — could be synced to a Mac (or iPad) without those same concerns.

The limited size and capabilities of the Apple Watch mean it’s likely that a parent device will remain necessary. I just don’t think the iPhone needs to be the only potential parent device, particularly in Apple’s ecosystem.

  • App Store review ridiculousness: Apple rejects AppleInsider's iPhone X app update because ...

I don’t use your app, I always just go to the web site. Do you classify the AI app as a news app or an entertainment app?

You guys may have to decide if you’re going to be a source of journalism or a source of advocacy.

If you’re journalists, you should be able to cover the subject of jailbreaking without giving advice on HOW to jailbreak.

Also, the headline reads as petulant and childish. Surely it could be rewritten to be a bit more analytical and less emotional.
This article is clearly labeled as an editorial. We are a news website, and the app is listed in the news category. We didn't tell anyone how to jailbreak, either.

Call me very skeptical.  What was the actual wording of the rejection?  Without a direct quote, I'm let to believe that the "reason" is speculation rather than Apple's justification.
Seeing the actual wording of the rejection would be nice. As is it sounds like secondhand info -- that you're reporting on what your dev told you. But did you see the rejection personally? What did it say?
Why would we lie about this? What a weird reaction to have.

I'm sure you have to find it a little humorous to be on the other side of the "defend Apple at all cost against all enemies" fans.  I'm sure someone will even question whether or not you changed your rejection notice.   It was pretty obvious, to me at least, that you wouldn't make an easily proven/ disproved claim that wasn't true.  It was also obvious the tone of your editorial was one of frustration and not accusation.
We (along with every other website on the internet) have a bit of a troll problem, along with the current "teh media is FAKE NEWZ~!" paranoia climate. Intelligent discussion and even a healthy dose of skepticism are perfectly fine, but accusing me of fabricating or exaggerating the content of a very plainly stated rejection letter is bizarre. Why on earth would I ever do that? If anything, publishing this editorial only makes things more difficult for our developers (who expressed as much to me this morning).
