  • First look: Apple's HomePod is loud, heavy and powerful

How does Hey Siri work with multiple devices in the same room? Is it still buggy? As it is now for me on the latest software, if I raise my wrist and say Hey Siri to my Apple Watch, my iPhone also activates Siri at the same time. Will I now have three devices activating Siri every time?
I hope Siri works better than Alexa in this regard. I'll often be ten feet away in direct earshot of my kitchen Echo, yet an Echo 40 feet away down a hall and in a bedroom will respond. I have to purposely lower my voice so that the more distant Echo can't hear me.

so will this work in playing audio for movies or tv shows purchased or rented through apple Tv? if it’d work for that and act like a sound bar of sorts i’d be all in.. but if it only plays music i’m not to sure i’ll jump on it
Yes. It works as an AirPlay speaker from an Apple TV.

  • HomePod review roundup: Apple's smart speaker sounds incredible, but Siri is lacking

It's become very clear to me that HomePod will not replace my Echos anytime soon.

HomePod can't control my Nest thermostat, LIFX bulbs, or Sony TV, add items to my shopping list, set multiple timers, or order Amazon products - the things I regularly use my Echos for. HomePod is also far too expensive to put one in every room as I have done with the Echo. It will, however, offer better sound quality for casual/background listening in one room when I don't want to fire up the power-hungry "home theater system".

I would prefer to have one "smart speaker" that provides both capability and sound quality, but neither the Echo nor the HomePod provides this, so they'll have to co-exist for now.

  • Ahead of Apple's HomePod launch, Amazon teases new voices for Alexa

Ima wondering what will happen in all the home that has Alexa listening in the background when this commercial comes on the TV...
This is becoming an issue for me with both "Alexa" and "Hey Siri" devices listening. I had to "mute" everything while trying to listen to a TWiT podcast this weekend where Leo kept saying "Hey Siri". An Episode of Dark Shadows kept triggering one of my Echo devices the other day. TV commercials will wake them up and there was a period a few weeks ago where some commercial that said nothing about Alexa would trigger one of my Echo devices in another room to start playing a genre of music I have no interest in - even though it couldn't hear me saying, "Alexa, stop."

  • HomePod preorders begin via Apple, smart speaker arrives Feb. 9

What bothers me is that Apple is using an “A8” chip that’s two generations old. I hate paying premium prices for “old” technologies.
The TI-84 Plus graphing calculator (which is still sold) uses a Zilog Z80 microprocessor that was introduced in 1976.

Some of today's most expensive automobiles in the six and seven-digit price range use powertrain control modules containing microprocessors that date back almost a decade or more, such as the ARM Cortex M4.

I'm confident that the A8 processor chosen by Apple for this application is more than adequate for a "smart speaker".
