Dude- don't even try to re-write history. I never cared for the iPhone because it never had - once again - are you listening now?:
1.) Cut and paste
2.) Video camera
3.) MMS text and pics
4.) AT&T's bad network
When it got the first 3 (all of which I'd asked for over the years and was repeatedly knocked for on here) I bought it but never would have without them. The fourth item has been for the most part fixed in NYC and I lucked out but still bought it taking a chance. I knew how much the iPhone would be fun due to my owning a Touch for a year prior.
I need a full-fledged OS for a computer subsitute- What's so difficult in understanding why? I can't do spreadsheets on an iPhone amongst other things.
It was probably an uncalled for comment on my part, but I'm kind of curious about how often you actually use those features. I personally don't use the video camera or mms at all, cut and paste is useful on occasion. I think your comments at the time were a little overblown.
Anyway, I would like to make one point here. The widely speculated tablet seems to be a consumer device, what you seem to want would be a profesional device, which would cost more and have a more limited appeal, but it might be better for you. I guess I would want the consumer device, so maybe we are just arguing for the device we want while ignoring other concepts. Snow Leopard does have a lot of touch friendly features such as stacks, safari, large icons... If I want you to acknowledge that iPhoneOS can make advances towards desktop level capabilities, I need to acknowledge that more aspects of OSX could become touch friendly as well. Personally, I don't think a cursor based OS will ever be as touch friendly as an OS designed specifically for touch, and without significant advancements, I don't think Snow Leopard would provide the seamless user experience that the average consumer would expect of an Apple tablet. Apple does have a patent for a tablet with a keyboard. If they were to pursue that idea, I would anticipate that is what you would want. Entering significant amounts of data into a spreadsheet would be annoying on a tablet without a keyboard, regardless of the OS.
In my opinion, a tablet with a trackpad and keyboard could run OSX just fine since its primary means of input are still present. The touch friendly UI elements will also make it usable without the cursor, but some tasks would still be better performed in the traditional manner. A tablet with no physical keyboard and trackpad/mouse should probably be based on iPhone OS, with whatever desktop features that are needed included as enhancements. Apple didn't spend 4+ years working on this thing to have the user experience hurt by a poor UI.
I thought you meant was that I was disregarding the iPhone's OS - in general.
I'm sure a version could go in a more powerful device. It already does - the iPod Touch.
However. I still stand by what I originally said: I don't want it on my 10" tablet. Now I might like SL version with some of its characteristics in it- like swiping pics.
But just as it is now- NO.
Gotcha. But I can't imagine that the *iPhone OS would be used on a more powerful device AS IS. I really think (hope) that Apple had the forethought to allow for their iPhone OS to be able to inherit more and more features or frameworks as future hardware calls for. Until possibly it IS the same as OS X, except for the touch UI.
*Why oh why did Apple ever name this "iPhone OS"? Didn't they know they would be using this on other devices that weren't phones? I'll give them a pass for the name iTunes but "iPhone" OS just leads to confusion when talking about other devices.

I use the video all the time. In fact I captured video of Derek Jeter breaking Lou Gehrig's Yankee record Friday night. There were 3 iPhones in my row shooting vids and pics all night. Of course they were all my friends.
I use texting all the time - a leftover habit from my Verizon days. I prefer it as it's faster for me to send and receive. I'v been paying for though have yet to receive the full MMS pics video feature yet as we await AT&T's promise.
$800 - $1,000 is not a bad deal at all. Now I wonder for this... where they would put the cost of Applecare? (same as MacBook, MacBook Air, and 13" Pro or 15" 17" Pro).
Gotcha. But I can't imagine that the *iPhone OS would be used on a more powerful device AS IS. I really think (hope) that Apple had the forethought to allow for their iPhone OS to be able to inherit more and more features or frameworks as future hardware calls for. It is confusing- the name even reminds me of Windows Mobile.
Sorry to single you out, but I've never understood why people respond this way to unsubstantiated (and frankly highly dubious) rumors of a price point.
You can't demand that Apple add features, or dismiss a product as being a loser, based on pricing rumors. I can see saying "If these rumors prove to be the case, that would be too expensive, in my book", but just flatly declaring fail as if it were a done deal make no sense, to me.
Fair points. I should reserve judgement until the device is released and the features and price are known.
But if the new apple teh shiny tablet is as described and priced as reported (you do bring up an excellent point about the reliability of the source concerning the rumored price) I think it s a failure. We have seen another rumor prior that suggested that the device will be $700-900. It's disappointing to me that there hasn't been rumors that it'll be cheaper. And BTW, I'm not demanding Apple add or subtract anything. I'm only suggesting it'll have a hard time finding customers. And I might add that I have two kids and such a device is more than a curiosity for me. I am probably someone Apple would like to buy two of these for their kids.
But right now I'm rather skeptical that I'll find value in it, or I find better value in other products.
I thought you meant was that I was disregarding the iPhone's OS - in general.
I'm sure a version could go in a more powerful device. It already does - the iPod Touch.

I think that it is pretty well understood that Mac OS X and iPhone OS X share a lot of common components. New feature implementations, [GPS] Location Services for example, are first implemented on one platform and ported to the other, where it makes sense. To some extent, the same is true for apps.
I do believe that Apple can "bulk up" iPhone OS X or "skinny down" Mac OS X to support a new Tablet device, whatever makes sense (maybe both do).
*
I guess it boils down to is:
1) What would YOU use the tablet for?
2) What kind of OS paradigm makes sense for YOUR use (multi-window desktop, or in-your-face)?
I am hoping that Apple takes the [in-your-face] iPhone OS X and enhances it to support the tablet (user multitasking, some Mac OS X features, like handwriting recognition, etc).
I don't think I want to see the Finder on the Tablet, or the Dock, or multiple resizable windows with their little traffic lights). Maybe they could expand on the Palm Pre concept and use CoverFlow for navigation and switching between tasks/apps.
Overall, I think we are currently trapped by the familiar convention-- mouse, keyboard, windowed display.
The Tablet gives Apple (and us) an opportunity to abandon convention and take a quantum leap in benefiting from technology.
Agreed, and the the tablet may not just have one 'Killer App' but have a 'Killer App' for each of a wide variety of industries, think medicine, education.
Exactly. Using education as an example, imagine the next-level classroom: all coursework, textbooks, exams (with notes and scratchpad), calculator, schedules, library, internet, etc. on a tablet. The parents' will embrace it, just to unburden that heavy backpack from their kids' shoulders. The students' will embrace having their own computer. The educators will embrace reduced overhead, increased efficiency, improved productivity and morale.
But if the new apple teh shiny tablet is as described and priced as reported (you do bring up an excellent point about the reliability of the source concerning the rumored price) I think it s a failure.
So, you don't know a single actual thing about this product for certain, but you already know it's a failure? This amazes me. Do you also levitate? BTW, I was the one who brought up the point about the source of this rumor not being confidence inspiring. Addabox was agreeing with me.
So, you don't know a single actual thing about this product for certain, but you already know it's a failure?
No, I'm expressing an opinion on the rumored tablet device based on the anticipated cost and features that have been discussed. Are there posting guidelines that forbid this? Is this uncommon here?

So now things have evolved around here such that if you comment on published AI rumors, you get your ass jumped? Guess what, I didn't publish the rumor of the $800 -1000 cost of the tablet. I'm only commenting on them.
Why don't you take your grievances about rumor mongering up with the moderators? Or you could visit other Mac websites that don't discuss rumors.
I keep reading about people wanting to run iWorks or any of a number of other documentvcreation programs on this Touch based tablet. It makes want to scream are you all nuts? It is a Touch tablet with no touch typing ability, nobody is going to be writing long winded documents on this thing. A short e-Mail yes of filling out a form, put a multi page document is likely to be way to frustrating. ...
I write a lot and am a touch typist, but I don't have a typewriter or computer with me when I'm on the bus or train so I use a portable. I've used everything from the original Palm Pilot, through the nino, iPaq Clie etc. and now I use an iPhone.
A week or two ago I did the three day novel writing contest, I used the iPhone only and I got to about 25,000 words before I gave up on day two. it's not ideal but it's totally possible to use a thumb keyboard and to get excellent speed out of it. I usually do about 50WPM on mine.
No, I'm expressing an opinion on the rumored tablet device based on the anticipated cost and features that have been discussed. Are there posting guidelines that forbid this? Is this uncommon here?
Woefully common. Sorry for pointing out that your opinions are based on nothing but poorly sourced rumors. Clearly I was out of line.

I'm so sick of these rumors. People were SO SURE that the tablet would be revealed at the September event, along with the iPod touch camera. None of it happened. Did anyone learn their lesson? Hell no.
There's nothing (in regards to geek news) more annoying than APPLE RUMORS. I don't know how you people live like this.
Apple doesn't need to do any marketing with people like you around.
You won't beat a physical keyboard, but the good news is if you really need a physical keyboard you can buy a MacBook, as they will continue to be sold. At least the Pro will anyhow. This tablet will be handy for doing bits and pieces in school and so forth, and great for couch-computing / couch-surfing. It will fit in with a lot of our modern lives very nicely.
woah woah woah...
A properly designed software keyboard could easily outperform a physical qwerty.
Remember the history of qwerty... they were designed specifically to be inefficient.
The problem isn't potential speed. Its the fact that most people are too lazy to re-learn anything they consider adequate. That may be a real hurdle, but don't think for a minute that there aren't input solutions that blow physical qwerty away.
I still can't see why this device needs to exist. Is it just to browse the web from my sofa? If so, the price is hilarious. If it's a portable media player then it's far too bulky. Then what? A computer with no buttons? Count me out.
Tablets have failed in the Windows world for many, many years now. Personally I believe that's simply due to the entire tablet concept being pointless.
I hear ya. The idea is a pretty sexy product and I'll probably want one to play with, but I'm just really not seeing it yet. I don't yet see any real use for this kind of device other than some niche situations. It kinda seems like a "Macbook Wheel" :-)
On the other hand, Apple is very good at seeing what the rest of us can't yet see, so I guess we'll just have to wait, but right now I don't get it.
I'm so sick of these rumors. People were SO SURE that the tablet would be revealed at the September event, along with the iPod touch camera. None of it happened. Did anyone learn their lesson? Hell no.

Almost all the rumors said the tablet would not be announced at the September event, and the Touch did have a camera at one point in its development cycle. I don't know why you feel the need to comment on how other people live their lives. If you don't want to read about Apple rumours, don't click the links.
Kids aren't stupid. They wouldn't be owning these netbooks if they didn't fulfill their needs. They do talk to each other, you know.
Kids buy crapbooks because its all they can afford, or all parents will buy them not caring if they break, are lost or are stolen.
The tablet will be the 'must-have' for students with anything close to the means. And within a year of that, they'll be all over the place, because they won't have the heretofore fatal flaw of running Windows and will be designed with taste.
Anyway, I would like to make one point here. The widely speculated tablet seems to be a consumer device, what you seem to want would be a profesional device, which would cost more and have a more limited appeal, but it might be better for you. I guess I would want the consumer device, so maybe we are just arguing for the device we want while ignoring other concepts..
no, no, no... you don't get it.
If a device is not designed specifically for techstud's precise needs, then it is DOOMED!!! DOOMED I SAY.
As an engineering student, I think there could be a real use for the tablet. I love having all my notes on my MBP, and for most non-math classes, I use the program NoteBook to organize my notes in an efficient way.
But for any math intensive classes, its right back to pencil and paper because simply its the fastest way to jot down math jargon and extensive equations. A well-designed tablet would allow me to take these notes, save them, and possibly sync them to my MBP!
However, iPhone OS as it is now would be a no go for me. I don't want Apple controlling the apps I'm running on something like a $700 tablet computer. On iPhone/iPod Touch I think its great, but I don't want to feel like I can only do as much as Apple/Apple Approved apps says I can. I'm hoping they put a touch version of SL on there.
Also, a few people seem to think MS would copy this. I don't see that's happening. An mp3 player (Zune) is one thing, but MS would be stepping on the toes of a lot of PC makers in making a full fledged tablet PC on their own. Pressuring PC makers to make a competitive device though, may be an option.
PS. I see a lot of people on here saying what students want. As a college student, I see a huge amount of students using Macs, the majority of those being the 13" Unibody MBP or the Early 2008 MBP. Those I've met who own a netbook bought it because its the only thing they could afford, or they had the money laying around and wanted a computer in addition to what they already had. Some PC users just don't like Macs, but there are also plenty of PC users I talk to that A) either want a Mac badly or Don't really know enough about Macs to worry about purchasing one. I've seen one student in one of my classes using a netbook to take notes in class, and it looked EXTREMELY uncomfortable.
Doesn't this report basically destroy all of the business relationships mentioned? Apple dealings are kind of like quantum particles... every time you view them, they change.

Hell no.
There's nothing (in regards to geek news) more annoying than APPLE RUMORS. I don't know how you people live like this.
Just look at the failure iPhone was.
Some PC users just don't like Macs, but there are also plenty of PC users I talk to that A) either want a Mac badly or
