Lotus Notes and GroupWise. Exchange Sucks. It is unstable, a resource hog, hard to maintain, and hard to secure.

BUT if you are using Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Office, etc, it is the 'Best' Solution.

But, this is called 'product tying', which is something that Microsoft Excels at. Exchange has improved over time, but it is still a piece of crap.

Does MS have any real control of spending and projects in the company? Alternatively are they deliberately trying to run multiple strategies to see which has the best final result and then they'll release the best one?

There's nothing wrong with that kind of internal competition normally, but if they've already announced that things like WinMo 6.5 and WPS7 are going to co-exist it really makes me think they want all systems out there not just the best of what they have

Management time and skills, capital, and the innovation quotient all have their limits, and MS need to accept some of these limitations and assemble more of the resources around a smaller number of projects, and then make them work.

Ballmer, if you back all the contestants in a race you're guaranteed to get the median return. The problem is that neither consumers nor your investors will accept that right now.

Win Phone 7 apps are not compatible with WiMo 6.5

Zune Phone 7 apps are not compatible with WIn Phone 7 nor WiMo 6.5

Microsoft Zune Phone 7 will be sold under the Microsoft name, but not leverage the business ties that are all that is keeping all of Microsoft's mobile products alive???

Zune Phone and Win Phone 7 are consumer focused.

Win Phone 6.5 is business focused.

All will continue to be supported....

To all of my friends who use Window Mobile products, I feel your pain, and may I suggest a competing product from RIM, Apple or Nokia... because it is VERY obvious that MS doesn't have your best interests in mind.

Nokia is no better. They've got Symbian, Maemo (soon to be replaced with MeeGo) and a Nokia OS for cheap feature phones.

Do you have a picture of Steve Ballmer on your nightstand?

Microsoft products have been the biggest deterrent to our civilization since the Dark Ages.

If all the effort squandered in trying to make MS products work had been put towards good use instead, we'd have Mars colonized by now.

    MS is an American embarrassment.

    ...her resume's pretty impressive:

    Microsoft, Mac Business Unit:

Oversaw multiple releases of MS Office for Mac

    - Produced "Entourage," an email client incompatible with Outlook

    - Left MacBU after designing framework for Office 2008, which stripped support for Scripting.

    - First "100% post-Roz" version of Office will reinstate these features

    Pink/Danger:

    Oversaw development of Microsoft Smartphone

    - Took over legacy code for first highly successful smartphone

    - Stagnated with code.

    - Strip funding for backend support; set stage for massive data loss

    - Paint office pink

    - ?????

    - PROFIT!

Don't worry, at the pace Apple is going deleting applications from it's store, it will have whittled third party applications down to two.

Now look at this list and exclude the products that Microsoft didn't either buy, borrow, or steal from somebody else.

Microsoft writes some of the best business software in the world. Ever heard of Exchange and Active Directory? These two pieces of software alone are the best of their kind and run in virtually every corporation in the world. It is not easy to manage all of this and be profitable in this economy. Microsoft is a respectable, profitable american company and the whole world should be grateful for it's existence.

That's some strong bias there. Too strong for me to have interest unfortunately.

In all fairness to the author this is written more as a straight news piece instead of a opinion piece, and how could he not mention that huge cluster fox trot that MS pulled? Danger has been coasting along since Ms bought them and then they manage to torpedo all the users data. How else do you start this story out? The once innovative Danger Group? The FAIL group?

i have to disagree unless you are referring to pre exchange 2003?

i went from novell to windows server 2003 with exchange. active directory is nowhere near what novell's directory was. it has some very bad design issues, but, it has been stable.

i ran exhange 2003 for 5 years with only one instance of unscheduled downtime and that was due to the dell PERC controller going bad that handled the RAID. incredible but true. now we use exchange 2007. i have found that if you focus all your resources on proper setup before you setup then AD and exchange works well. of course i don't roll out the first release of any of that i always wait till sp1....

i have pleaded with apple reps to give me something to compete with exchange and they don't have anything. i would happily use something other than MS if it works well and can do all the things exchange does. i also pleaded for something to use instead of sharepoint (which sucks sucks sucks and i am not going to roll out) but all they said was try 'xythos'.

its clear that apple really is only interested in the 'me and my machine' and not enterprise. which is fine except that it hurts sales.

Microsoft do sell good mice (mouses?) and make hilarious commercials, albeit the latter is unintentional.

And yet it's being argued that Apple's installed base and unit sales are on par for a 3 year old product or that because it's Apple we can simply look the other way because it favour's Apple. Or that the people with battery or the wide variety of other issues that have either called Apple or walked into a store and were given new phones without question are somehow being ignored in this number. The number of people who have bought a new device every year and are collecting the previous model or simply had their device get smashed. The fact is, installed base ≠ unit sales. We should care about the facts all the time, not just when they support our view points.

MS is trying to sell products that even they don't understand and appear to be fighting in-house over which platform to support; WIndows mobile is doomed

And apple picks its battle. The way apple played the Palm challenge was nothing less than genius. Palm was like a mosquito; Every time they enabled iTunes, Apple swatted at them. Eventually they became irrelevant. Palm stock topped at $17, now it's at $5 and likely to continue sliding. Apple saw no need to launch the lawyers? But for Google?

Yes cbut for Google. Should be interesting to see how this plays out now that business" are choosing Google Apps for business over Microsoft.

This article says Windows Mobile 6 failed:

But how do you measure failed? Because Apple made something better? The fact is, more WM phones are being made today than EVER. Is that a sign of failure?

I don't think WM6 failed, but I do think it didn't exactly win. With WM7, if they really don't allow backward compatibility with apps, and they force everyone to install apps through the marketplace (two current rumors) then they can kiss their die-hards goodbye. People will just go with Android.

From what I've been reading at Android forums, you can pretty much do with Android what you can with WM these days.

A "win" for Microsoft would be to give WM "thumb-friendly" UI, and a TREMENDOUS performance boost. There's already SO MUCH you can do with a WM phone, so if the could just give us those two things in the very least, they would see a good boost in sales.

As usual, Microsoft reacts instead of thinks. Although whoever thought it was a good idea to create two separate mobile phone divisions in a single company is an idiot.

Nokia doesn't have two rival software platforms in their own company though. They only make hardware for Symbian so there is no internal tension there. Nothing is wrong with making separate software for different classes of phones. A feature phone vs a smart phone. The problem is Microsoft is creating two software platforms that directly compete with each other in their own company. That would be like Microsoft creating two desktop operating systems that were not compatible with each other (with no intention of one replacing the other) and telling them to compete with each other. It's lunacy.
