Thank you for you wishes. For me, need is not really an issue, I simply want one (or two). At least one will sit in the family room, next to the TV etc. and be convenient for family to use & browse, while maintaining some social connection, & one will become my latest business travel companion.
I think ghostface might have been being sarcastic, but I'm with you. At that price, I am going to buy one just to fool around with and it is more of a want than a need.
One of the things I think Apple is doing here and perhaps counting on, is that the low end model is so damed cheap that many many folks will pick one up just out of curiosity. At least a part of the reason tablets haven't sold before is they represent a "weird" way of computing for the average person, yet they typically cost several thousand dollars.
With the barrier to purchase so low, many more people will be tempted to try out the new way of doing things and buy an iPad.
But if the thing isn't operator locked (is it?) I can go to any of the mentioned countries and purchase a Wifi or later on a Wifi + 3G and carry home to Sweden. Or?
I am still wondering about one thing: tethering your iPhone to a Wifi-only iPad? Will work?
Just to make sure, I would rather get it from the horse's mouth. In this case, I quoted in part from Apple's Official press release.
Why wouldn't it if your wireless service features it.? My MacBook Pro does.
BTW, since Rogers allows tethering does the following work-around function in the U.S? Or anywhere else for that matter.

The iPad 3G (or WiFi+3G as Apple calls it) is unlocked. So yes, you can buy it from anywhere and use it with any carrier that uses MicroSIM.

In the past, when Apple accepted pre-orders, you get your product by Fedex/UPS on release date if you order it early enough. Apple usually sent pre-orders few days early but ask carriers to not deliver them until the release date so people don't get them early.

Definitely. Probably the best way is to use MyWi. This requires jailbreaking and Rock or Cydia. It seems complex but the sn0w guys have made it pretty painless. I don't see any reason to get the 3G iPad if tools like this are available.
I use tethering on my iPhone to my netbook but there seems to always be wifi access available, so my tethering usage is so tiny that it is almost not even needed. I know I could get by with just the wifi version.
But I can see the 3G version being a perfect device for Grandma or people without a computer that just need email.
I stood in line for the iPhone and iPhone 3G, and I waited a week to get my hands on a 3GS. I'd like to have an iPad for reading the morning paper, books, and traveling, but this one I won't buy until they put the forward facing camera in it so I can also use it for Skype teleconferences.
Hmmm..... Apple up over $6.50 on the announcement, with overall portfolio value up quite handsomely. Planning to sell 10 shares of the company (to allow for capital gains taxes and some accessories), and my order for two 64GB w/3G is pretty much all set!
My hat gets tipped to anyone and everyone who buys a $500 16Gb Wifi iDevice.
May you not complain in 6 months when the price drops.
Heh! What computing device's price doesn't drop over time? In this case my guess is that Apple will be selling all they can manufacture through Christmas, though, then drop the price next year.

Hehehe... oh no kidding & maybe sooner. Right around the school shopping season, I can imagine the 16 gig model being discontinued & the 32 gig unit in at $399. Also, look for the 3G option to get less and less expensive as AT&T pushes Apple to push this out the door in more volume. I mean, it's a $5 chip and a $1 antenna, so c'mon...
But seriously, what would us conservative implementers & wait and see buyers do without the early adopters to drive the price down, juice up the specs & work all the bugs out? We need these guys to keep our wallets fat!
They're releasing it on Easter weekend? That's a pain for people who will be traveling out of town.

But in this case release date is a Saturday. That complicates things considerably.

it would be nice but isn't a deal breaker for me. I think that the next version will have one, maybe by this christmas.
You sound like someone I know that says the same thing, but I know for sure when they get their hands on one in the Apple Store they'll walk out with one the same day!!

They have to reserve money for the unpaid GSM royalties and of course, Nokia.

More like Kraft Foods, the maker of Kool-Aid.

Glad to see you back, TEKSTUD! (Not).

So it's late then.
Not really - just slightly. No big deal. Could have been anything, and likely a marketing decision.
