Yes, a cellular voice call is required the first time FaceTime is used to connect two users. The keynote iPhones might have been specially configured to do just about anything, though.
The easiest way would be to manually add all the IEMIs (an example of what it might use for verification) that you'd use for testing internally to the FaceTime database server.
Yes, I can well believe that that caused problems and deactivating the cellular data connection may have helped the issue somehow, but I fail to see why.
Please explain why this is relevant to the death grip discussion and Apple's proposed solution.

I've already explained why it's relevant as for Apple's "fix" they have no "fix".
If you missed it though I'm wondering if somehow Apple were trying to mask any possible signs of the antenna issue and when the wifi signal dropped and the ip4 switched to it's cellular data and that displayed the pop up message "Could not activate cellular data" whether that was a part of how Apple were trying to mask the issue. I don't know whether or not it was, but if it was, that's significant. Perhaps we will never be able to tell with certainty but it got me thinking about it. I hope I haven't committed any kind of thought crime here!
I could repeat this behavior on a touch pro, but I had to squeeze the phone like someone was trying to steal it from me, AND the signal loss was only one bar, not as exaggerated as the iphone4.

It's not the bars with the iPhone 4 it's the dropped calls and the data disruption.
You seem to be reading old news reports. As you know, wi-fi issues arose during Jobs' keynote. Wi-fi is faster than 3G cellular and FaceTime only works over wi-fi, so that's the technology Jobs wished to use during his keynote. The issue at that time, which was widely reported, was interference from hundreds of distinct wi-fi networks that were being operated in his vicinity.
The present issue is entirely different and only involves cellular voice and data services (at least so far as anyone has reported). This issue was not discovered until the iPhone 4 reached the hands of reviewers (like Walt Mossberg) and consumers. It was not reported in the press until the embargo on reporting was lifted on roughly June 23rd.
What about when he was trying to show high resolution display on iPhone 4, side by side with 3GS? 3GS was happy with the same wifi network. iPhone 4 had trouble with wifi and could not connect to 3G either. Jobs was mistakenly holding it with wrong grip!!
And as far as the media reports go, they just reported what jobs said.
Well, when my 3GS has trouble with Wifi, it latches on to 3G and manages to download www.nytimes.com easily :-) (I am not referring to Facetime demo, I am referring to screen resolution demo with nytimes.com)
Oh wait, may be Steve did not have a 3G sim activated with PS services. Cost cutting, I bet.
Bullshit. Save your money for iPhone 5, buy a cheaper 3G S. Or buy an Android phone.
even with apple saying there is a known issue with the way signal reads, i can still cannot get my iphone 4 to drop more than 1 bar, even when i purposely try to cover the antenna. its much better than 3gs and androids junk

Honestly, I am envious of your luck!! I wish I had a good iPhone 4.
Your songs can 'affect' people in the effect they have on their emotions.
Apple can effect a change in their signal measurement algorithms which will have a lovely effect on the signal bars and so affect many people very positively .....

LOL .. and send them to fool's paradise and let them live happily ever after! The End.
Amen brother. The internet has unfortunately given voice to crazy people the world over. Traditionally they had no voice in our society and we were all better off for that.
After reading a gazillion forum posts about the iPhone4's reception woes, reviews, and user experience I actually decided against purchasing for the following reasons :
a) Apple's PR (issue resolved by changing the bars... I think not)
b) Simply touching the bands of the antenna together is enough to potentially lose a call (according to many who actually own an iPhone4)
c) Cheaper Android High Spec phones now available that dont suffer this problem as badly.
d) Apple not willing to give out bumpers to resolve it and expecting us to pay $30 for them (a rip off basically)
I cant justify this purchase anymore, so am now looking to Motorola Droid X/Incredible or HTC for my new smartphone. I do however still love my iMac, so its not like Apple has lost me as a customer fully... just not for their phones.
This would have been my first iPhone too.
I find this a bit disingenuous, it's like you were searching for a reason *not* to purchase an iPhone. Glad you found one, and further, glad you went on to an Apple fan site and listed your "reasons" not to buy one. Thank you.
As I've said a number of times since the beginning - "Number of bars displayed does not matter! It is your ability to place calls and hold onto them that matters! The iPhone 4 does this better than any previous iPhone. Case closed."

The problems Steve Jobs had during keynote are due to the same design issue? He was cupping the phone, if you watch carefully.
He was on WiFi.

Mind if I borrow that phrase from time to time?

How about you borrow this one instead-
10,000,000 cases x $29 = $290,000,000 hmmm....not a bad sum, let's keep the antenna where it is.

It doesn't. It compensates for a poorly thought through antenna design.
...which you have the option not buying at all or of returning it within 30 days for a full refund if that is your belief.
So what are you going to sue for?
Bus fare, washing tear stains from your pillow, shattered dreams or what?
