I have an AT&T iphone 4. I'm planning on getting an iPad2. I'm wondering if I should save some bucks and get the iPad2 without 3G, and use the wifi hotspot from the iphone when I'm traveling and want the ipad to access the net.
I don't think I'll go that route, but its worth considering. Anybody have any thoughts?
I think that might be a good idea, the only thing you will really be missing is GPS. The wifi version does not come with GPS, so if you are hiking (i do this allot with my iPad 1) or out with your iPad you will not see your location. Now the wifi version can use Wifi geo-location to find where your iPad is but I'm not sure if this will work with the personal hot spot feature and if you have no wifi connection then you will have no location info
There is a blue tooth gps product that does work with the iPad & ipod though. its $100
I had hoped for a Thunderbolt port as I think it would make a good tech demo, and the timing was right for it. Oh well. Sad that they're making me wait longer to see iOS 5
iPad 2 looks really good though and I'm glad HDMI finally made an appearance (I wonder if they used the unused pins in the dock connector for it since digital video out wasn't available before), it should be coming to the rest of the iOS devices now.
I hoped for thunderbolt too.
Though... I am curious how they did an iPad 30 pin connector (with 2 free pins) to an HDMI 19 pin connector -- and have pins left over for concurrent charging and syncing.
I wonder if there is intelligence in the iPad which:
-- recognizes the presence of the iPad/HDMI adapter
-- reroutes the pinouts accordingly
If so, could this same logic be applied to an iPad/Thunderbolt adapter.
Overall, this really is what the device should have been at the beginning, and I'm sure it will sell very well.
Considering the iPad was pretty much the first of its kind, this is kind of a silly statement. A first generation device breaking new ground "shouldn't be" anything in particular as there's little to compare it with. First gen devices are rarely, if ever, meets everyone's needs.
proof that apple's competitors need to look at themselves to innovate and not outside. apple has, once again, raised the bar and everyone else is scrambling to catch up.
i've read posts from all the crabby mcnasties and really, they're just sad, pathetic, envious, and probably feel quite powerless against what is, once again, true innovation.
btw, i don't own an iphone or an ipad. i have used them on occasion when i'm out and about with friends. they're simply awesome!
this puts a smile on my face (and, yes, my hands are above my desk and in plain sight).
i'm curious why Apple made the following distinction:
Quote:
Audio Playback
- Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound pass-through with Apple Digital AV Adapter (sold separately)
TV and Video
- Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
the iPad 2 will be able to bitstream multi-channel audio and yet MP4 container support seems to suggest only stereo. hopefully a clarification is forthcoming. i may actually purchase the iPad 2 within the next few weeks.
Looks like iPad 2 has caused some serious panic amongst the trolls, fandroids and Apple haters. Kind of fun to sit back and watch them freak out. Boys, haven't you learned that recycling your criticisms of the original iPad isn't going to work any better the second time around.
BTW, no one has mentioned no Blu-ray drive yet. You guys might want to jump on that one.
Except it's the exact opposite of what Apple has been trying to tell users for years: "your (iPhone/iPod/iPad) screen doesn't need a cover".
The aluminum back is far more sensitive to scratches than glass so they make a case that covers the tough material and leaves the soft one completely exposed
Overall it's quite an impressive upgrade, although extremely lame that they went with the same crappy cameras as last year's iPod touch.
I'll never buy one because the price/performance/size thing doesn't work for me, but I expect it to sell extremely well to other people.
I'm buying the 3G model just in case you need cellular data. There's no contract, you can let it expire at any time (which is what I did after the first month with my original iPad 3G -- I was curious to see how well it worked out). Of course, if you can live with tethering, maybe you really don't need it.
However, the 3G model also has assisted GPS so you can use your iPad for GPS navi, even if you don't have cellular data. Navfree is one GPS navigation app that has a preloaded map. Others (like MotionX) can precache itineraries.
You can also buy a blue tooth GPS and pair it with the iPad to get GPS.

Thunderbolt is proprietary to Intel and uses PCI Express. Why would the iPad use this? To support multiple displays far larger than 1080p? Ha! To access huge files on RAID? Ha!
I'm very happy to see HDMI out AND video mirroring. Thunderbolt is a PC interface.

This is not correct. ORDERS start March 11th. Checked their website plus tried to order. Did Steve Jobs mis-speak?
it means lines at the apple stores march 11th. They don't want to shrink the lines with preorders.

Very disappointing - not nearly as good as Motorola Xoom.
It looks like 2011 will be a year of Android tablets after all.

And the new specs:
http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/
Edit:
front cam VGA 30fps
back cam 720p 30fps
+
I think its funny that you can only Geotag via Wifi even in the 3G/GPS version
more likely a mistake in the specs than an actual limitation of the iPad 2.

Take a look at: http://www.apple.com/ipad/smart-cover/
Under "great looks, and even better moves"...
If you prefer to hold iPad, the Smart Cover flips back and out of the way like a page in a magazine.
I had already seen that web page prior to writing my post, but missed the part about "fold like a magazine"
(I'm just too excited)
The cellular payment gateway.
But for people like me who want a small computer to write and test code on the go...it is still a toy. I am "stuck" using a Macbook Air.
They have those, they're called laptops.

Piss in his own bathtub, more likely.

How long do you think it will take before some idiot sue Apple because the iPad doesn't "fold like a magazine" even though this refers to the cover?

I want to know how well it stays on when its in a bag. looks like it could easily slide off

I wonder if i take my sim from my first iPad and put it into the new one, i will still get my unlimited data.

It's gonna be great.
Surely we'll see:
Toy!
I'm so disappointed.
Deal breaker!
The competition is already miles ahead!
What no HDMI, SD reader, Flash, blah blah blah?
The deal-breakers for me are: no wire wheels; no mud flaps with shiny reflectors of pinup girls!
Sigh!
