radiohead kicks ass.
Ok, maybe it's cause I'm buzzing a little, but radiohead kicks so much ass it's not even funny. I'm watching "meeting people is easy" and I realize how much this band rocks. I know that there are some of us that thing "radiohead is boring" but I've got to disagree.... They are the best band.... ever (maybe). Disagree? Agree? Post your thoughts HERE.

sigh.... one of those bands that I just dont "get" and wish i did cuz it seems to be the "cool" thing to do

They're one of those bands I know you could get because you have good taste in music.
Get ok computer, listen to it. Repeatedly. On some good headphones. Not an mp3 version, but the CD. (or some well-encoded mp3's ... I can hook you up if you want.)
Then get The Bends. Listen to it. Repeatedly. Good headphones are not as required for this one. Listen to "Street Spirit (fade out)" while walking if possible. Memorize "Fake Plastic Trees" and learn what real depression is.
Then move on to their more recent stuff. It just kicks ass. Believe me. If you don't like 'em, you just don't get it.

karma police is my favorite from them. is the rest of ok computer up to that standard...?

Is the rest of ok computer up to karma police's standard? Well, it's my second least favorite song on there, if that's any indication. "Let Down" (song #5) is one of the best songs I've ever heard. "Subterreanean Homesick Alien" is also absolutely great. Same goes for "Lucky". It's just a great CD.

Chalk me up as another a guy who doesn't feel the appeal. I dug Creep, a song I believe they've basically disowned.
Jeff

I think you're right about them disowning creep. But only because the version that was so popular was the radio edit and not the real version. And that's a common thing with bands that don't "want" to be popular... throw off the tune that gains mass appeal. Pablo Honey is their worst album (also their first). They get better with age, and you can see an evolution in their music. They're pushing the boundries of rock. Something I can't say for my other favorite band, pearl jam. And you've got to see them live.
Plus, their non-abashed mac users "i might be wrong" was made on their tour bus using FCP.

ok...next question. what other bands (preferrably euro, as most american music sucks these days) is it comparable to?

None. They've been associated with bands like Coldplay and Travis, but those bands are at least 7 years behind radiohead in terms of what they do. What you hear from those two is more comparable to the bends (which is a great CD for what it is: conventional acoustic/grunge rock).
BTW, here's a link to an Apple hot news story about radiohead. They're just cool.
perhaps tomorrow I will dedicate an hour of my pathetic life and listen to it in its entirety with headphones
Should I feel insulted?
Jeff
I like Coldplay, some people call them Radiohead lite.

No! Not at all. I like coldplay, too. But radiohead's better.

ps - coldplay's "a rush of blood to the head" is one of the better albums I've heard from human bands recently.

great cd. although i've never heard them compared to coldplay. coldplays got a much softer and more balladesque sound...
Don't 'get' it? Then you probably weren't depressed when you heard it, and I don't mean this pussy pop 'depression'.
Then came Kazza. I downloaded some of Radiohead's music and videos...and I like them. I wouldn't pay for a CD of theirs (I have enough great live/rare stuff already). But maybe when their new CD comes out I'll buy it.
They are an amazingly talented group. Their singer is tolerable (after seeing live footage...I get it).
Comparisons?
1. Pink Floyd
2. The Cure
3. Echo & The Bunnymen
4. Teardrop Explodes
5. REM
6. Suicide
But they are very unique in songwriting and musicianship. Very penetrating.
Can someone mention any current American band that compares to them either? The Brits have what real "Pop" music is what it's all about since the '80s. REM only comes to mind.
Creep, and the rest of that album is inferior to their more recent work. However if you are in an angry mood and driving really fast and playing it ridiculously loud then Creep can be a good song.
1. Inside My Head
2. Palo Alto
3. Talk Show Host
4. Wonderwall (Oasis cover)
5. Hear Me (Rare Kid A side B song)
6. Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd Cover)
7. Sunday Bloody Sunday (U2 Cover)
8. Nobody Does It Better (Carly Simon Cover)
9. The Thief (Can Cover)
10. Big Boots (Live)
11. True Love Waits (Live)
12. Optimistic (Live)
13. Lucky (REM & Radiohead)
14. Creep (Acoustic)
15. Yes I Am (Acoustic)
16. Life In a Glass House (Full Length Version)
17. Astronaut (Radiohead & Ani DeFranco)
18. Trans-Atlantic Drawl
19. Just (Live)
If you seek...you shall find.
My favorite radiohead song ever is "Life In A Glass House" from Amnesiac.
radiohead is a lot like tool in that you can't listen to it expecting your typical radio rock song. Their sound isn't similar, but it's music that you need to pay a bit of attention to to get into. It's not a matter of "getting it", it's just a matter of giving it your full attention. Like "Eulogy" from tool... same deadl
