YES Because only one company can ever be successful. There can only be one. People do not like competition that why Americans only buy one car, one computer and Toilet paper brand because no two companies can ever be successful. Thats why no one buys Pepsi.
Both of these companies can and will be successful. They do not have to destroy the other to make a profitable business. As an Android Fan I can say this with out feeling bad... But Eric Schmidt has a Chronic case of Foot In Mouth syndrome.
That's like saying American cars clearly are the winner over BMW. You can't look at one element of the product and categorize it against one company.
From now on when I compare basketball teams I'm going to compare the LA Lakers vs. the Eastern Conference. Hmm...Eastern Conference scores a lot more points per night and has a lot more depth!
Even if it was General Motors vs BMW it would make the same amount of nonsense. Why would anybody that seemingly must be smart say such ignorant things.
Marketshare isn't everything - but you need 50%+ of the key active / informed user base to be strong and sustainable. Apple is not on that path and needs to forgo some short term profits (profits that is is giving away because it doesn't even know what to do with all the $) for long term insurance. I would also recommend they eat humble pie and make a large 2 handed iPhone for those who want them - make a phone to fill all the key market niches. Business is war and you have to fight on all fronts!
Apple is so on the path because the usage share for ios >> usage for android. It was different with PCs because people buy PCs to use as a PC. Many People are "buying" androids but use them only as a phone.

We don't have a problem with competition. We just want the competition to stop stealing. Pepsi didn't steal coke's formula. BK didn't steal McDs secret sauce.
I dont think Apple was ever out to "win" anything (aka marketshare). The price of their products certainly suggest they are more interested in quality vs. quantity.
I probably misunderstood Jobs when launching the first iPad. Didn't he say (word by word) that the price point made it quite impossible for a competitor to enter the tablet market?
Go watch/listen again....
At 1:30.55 Steve says: "Now, the iPad... If you were to sum it up -- is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device -- at an unbelievable price....
...our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device -- at an unbelievable price....
and we think that this is going to be a really great combination."
Of course you (and most of us) inferred that the iPad offering at a $499 price point (when everyone expected a $999 price) would make it difficult or "impossible" for competitors to successfully enter the tablet market for several years...
And, in fact, that has proven to be the case for the last 2 years.
It looks as if the only meaningful competition to date -- is the iPad Mini.
Last night I was at BB buying 3 iPhone 5's.(upgrades form 4) While i was there waiting and doing my contract they sold 13 iPhones and the had two Droids return.
He'd better hope Google is "winning" the market share battle because it's the only way Google is going to survive.
Google cannot exist unless they can harvest data and they cannot harvest data unless you use their services. When Apple developed the iPhone Schmidt saw the long term plan would eventually eliminate Google from the equation: apps would replace many searches and some as yet undeveloped in-house Apple technology would replace the rest. Apple would eventually get big into cloud data and perhaps cloud services eliminating that avenue for Google to grab your data. That left only one thing to do: develop something that would permanently insert Google between users and their data. An operating system is the perfect tool because no matter what hardware you choose, what carrier you choose, what apps you choose, what search engine you choose, etc. the operating system is still there in position to capture every byte.
If you trust Google to sit in between you and your data it's a happy place because Google offers a lot of very good free services and the myriad of hardware choices means there's something for virtually everyone.
If, however, you don't trust Google then you'd better hope a viable Android competitor continues to exist. Apple, even with a small market share, is still raking in most of the industry's profits and so should continue to be an alternative for a long time to come.
No, it won't happen, the facts are against it. Most Android users who actually use their phone as smartphones end up regretting their choice and switch to iPhone at their next contract. There is no significant switching in the opposite direction.
Love reading the "I love Apple but" concern troll posts that basically end with the conclusion that unless the iPhone gets more <insert-pet-Android-feature-here/>, Apple is doomed. No need for subterfuge: you should proudly out yourself. You love Google, and its purely a matter of "reason and logic" that only Google-fans are exclusively capable of.
It's quite easy to have large market share numbers when you have to give away your phones for free or bundled as part of a "2-for-1" deal, as Android phones have been in the last few years. On the other hand, people who plunk down cash for iPhones - you couldn't get a "free" one for years - really want them, use them, and buy apps for them.
What's more interesting is what Schmidt DIDN'T say... 80% of Google's mobile ad revenue comes from iOS yet just 20% comes from its "clearly winning" Android; Android has generated about $500M in revenue for Google since 2008; in 2008 Apple had just under $25 billion in the bank yet four years later has quadrupled that to over $100 billion (that's with a . In the same time that Google made $500M with Android, Apple made well over $75 billion in the same period of time.
That chart will be even worse for Google when Samsung inevitably forks Android.
Samsung has already forked Android. Stigma and everything.

Hey...
When can the world get rid of Google?
The things we miss is just Search. For all the services they provide, we have alternatives.
Die Google.

I do regret. They are too slow. Very very slow.
Switched to iPhone 4S. Now 5.
As long as Schmidt gets to count it as an activation

Galaxy SIII is already $99.
Yes Android is clearly winning. Much like the Black Knight.
