Bring back John Hodgman and Justin Long. Except John can be Samsung.

When we all have PVRs to pause live TV and then skip over adverts, or use our remotes to switch channels during ads, or at the very least have our laptops/tablets/smartphones to use whilst the adverts are on, are you peeps really saying that you WATCH adverts?

I'm shocked. Even at the cinema I'm chatting to friends or on my iPad whilst the adverts play.

I couldn't even tell you what a Samsung advert looks or sounds like. I only see Apple adverts if Appleinsider or Macrumors has them on their homepages. Even then, I rarely bother to check them out.

People still watching ads. That's so last millennium, darling image

Interestingly, that is a big part of the point: Samsung ads are amusing enough that people would actually watch one for entertainment value (I know I clicked on the embedded ad in this article).

I do think it's time for Apple to break some new ground in their campaigns however..

    Easy to say…

But do Apple feels it needs to?

Apple knows its reality more than the hysterical and most of time stupid journalists and so call specialists in tech biz/ads. Apple holds the actual numbers.

Apple will never, ever sell as much as Samsung, because Samsung is trying to sell to anyone out there, the majority of people out there will never ever buy an Apple product for various reasons, but the main reason is - the majority do NOT think.

They buy the cheapest, they buy what the articulated guy from TV says it is good to buy.

Ergo assuming ALL people do not fact-check ( the majority will NOT, tho )?

I would agree myself that the adds are "scoring points" with consumers though I would disagree with any assertion (and note that Segal doesn't say this, only the posters here do), that this means Samsung is "winning" or that Apple has anything to worry about from them.  The ads are funny, well-shot, etc. but they show *nothing* of the product at all.  They don't say *why* you should use a Galaxy Tab or why it's better than an Apple iPad.  This one in particular hardly shows the device at all and when it does, all it shows is that it has a stylus and a guy swipes a page with it instead of his finger.  Wow.

These are the kind of ads that drive idiots to the store and maybe towards buying the actual product in some cases, but at the end of the day, a Galaxy is still a pretty shitty piece of kit that doesn't actually do very much and most of the owners will eventually discover that.

And what did "Think Different" show of actual Apple products? Or the iconic iPod advertising campaign show of the iPod's capability? Answer is: absolutely nothing.

As for "Galaxy is still a pretty shitty piece of kit that does not actually do very much" -- that's a completely ridiculous statement. The Galaxy does a lot, and is a very nice device. You like your iPhone? Good, I like mine too. I also like my Lumia and my Kindle Fire HD -- they are all just gadgets, not sacred objects (but you have obviously drunk the Apple Kool-Aid, and believe that you are not cool unless you have an Apple device. Say thank you to your friendly Kool-Aid purveyor  Ken Segall.

Who inside Apple has enough clout to introduce the next surprising, disruptive invention?

Oh, nobody?  Yeah, even ol' Steve barely had enough clout to do that.  Steve suddenly got famous in 2010-2011 when the iPad was a hit even though all agreed it was a "stupid idea," his 9th "stupid idea" in a string of successful, profitable, revolutionary ideas that were ahead of the curve.

Apple hasn't done an interesting "stupid idea" since Steve died.  It is run by businessmen now.  And on deck, you have jizzlords like Einhorn.

I didn't read anyones comments yet, just want to make this breif. Apple's ads strike people with a clear, crisp, & emotional sense of what their products offer. It's straight up. My opinion Samsung is fueled by currency, Apple's fuel is passion. That's how i feel in comparing the two videos. ????

I respect those who respect me. Let me make my mistakes, so i can learn.

Apple ads from what i read, tell you about the product capabilities/strength.

But people like fake dramas, no wonder TV sucks nowadays.

Apple is no longer a market challenger like when it was in 'I'm Mac' era or 'crushing IBM dominant Super Bowl' era. Not responding to Samsung's or LG's recent ads is possibly the best strategy. Nothing much Apple can do about it, except the next 'one more thing' that will awe the customers and the competitors.

    Thx!

For saying WHAT i could not.

But as i wrote, Samsung offers the fake drama people like so much.

I never believed Apple was cool, just different, serene.

I like that, many people don‘t, tho.

Firstly, people who live in trailer parks and drive '80 Chevy Novas don't have purchasing power, since otherwise they would live in houses and drive cars. Secondly, if you look at the Samsung ads it is pretty clear that Samsung is trying to target (successfully, according to Segall) the exact same target audience as Apple.

    You couldn't be more wrong.

First, people who live in trailer parks and drive Novas do have purchasing power. Not as much as someone living in a mansion and driving a Bentley, but they have some money to spend - and enough to make some companies very profitable.

Second, Samsung is TRYING to reach the same demographic as Apple, but they're failing miserably. You don't succeed with a demographic by calling them stupid.

I think Apple should have an ad that promotes Bump and AirPlay. Tag line: Bump can do what Sammy's phone tap does and you don't need to buy a new $400 tv to mirror, just a $100 Apple tv.

Agreed on number 1. There are a few very wealthy people in my family. If they are a 10 then I'm a 3 on the wealth scale. Apple has made a lot more money from me than from all of them combined. Maybe that's why they are wealthy.  image

I don't agree on number 2. I don't think that Apple and Samsung are after the same demographic. Samsung seems to be going for geek chic. That cool factor. Android seems to hit that spot quite well but it is a limited market. Apple seems to be going after anyone and everyone who wants something that works easily and works well.

… but you are saying the same. No?

People express their opinion, does it make them rabid fools?

Any opinion, holding more or less ”emotion“ is nothing more than an opinion.

I already said why he is wrong.

Think Different = Did set Apple apart from the cartel that sells windows PC only.

    How you may ask.

Just look around, Apple is being cloned by everyone.

However well produced (and I do think they look good, sound good, and move along pretty well), the stories presented in this campaign annoy me, beginning with a mobile game startup named "Unicorn Apocalypse" that's populated by multi-cultural, "hip" people of varying age.

When someone is trying that hard to connect with me, they don't connect with me.

Then maybe they are not trying to connect with "you".

For some time I have been wanting Apple to respond more directly to Samsung's personal-attack ads. Shouldn't be that hard; they are a fat target.

Would love to see one showing the Droid fans actually lure a person out of the line at the Apple store; person asks "where is the line for the Galaxy?" When told no one waits in line for a Galaxy, they go back to the END of the Apple line. Fade to white with simple line of Apple font saying: "iPhone. Worth waiting for."

You think? Sammy seems to be targeting 20 something male nerds and Apple is targeting parents with children, women, executives, medical professionals, schools and government.

After watching a few of the latest Samsung ads I thought they somehow hired an Apple biased ad agency because they always paint Samsung users in a bad light. One user says they are making the game unicorn look exactly like they appear in real life. In another ad the finance ladies are scolding the Android boys because the project is way behind schedule while the guys are kicking back with their feet on the desk. To me these stereotypical loser nerds do not make Samsung look good at all. Apple doesn't need to advertise as long as Samsung is releasing these stupid commercials.

So what the **** does Ken Segall want/expect Apple to do? Lower itself to playing in the mud, and start running Samsung bashing ads? That would be the worst possible thing it could do. Apple's ads focus on the product and its features, and how these features are meaningful to the everyday person. This is the best thing they can do. Samsung's ads "work" because of the situation- if Apple tried the same thing it would backfire, and validate Samsung and its products as something Apple cares about/fears. Apple isn't competing with Samsung, nor should it push the impression that it is.

So you are saying that the most recent Apple ads are the best and most effective ads that Apple has done in the past 10-12 years?
