Apple needs to have a mock funeral. Effigy of Ballmer on a black crepe-draped Surface. Ending in a pyre, with weeping employees tearing their hair and rending their garments.

If they dropped them to $79, they might sell some. At $799? Forget it.

you could have just stopped at the bolded part.

I really don't get the surface pro. It's a tablet that wants to be a laptop, but as a laptop, it has an awful keyboard/trackpad and can't actually be used on your lap. You can get a actual windows 8 netbook for less than half the price. And as a tablet, I really don't see the appeal of running apps designed for the desktop without a mouse/keyboard. Touch UI has different requirements than mouse/keyboard UI. Attempting to merge the two together can't possibly work as well in either direction as custom designing for each.

Sorry MS, the surface is doomed.

Get out of the tablet hardware business and focus on writing software.

    What's a 'Surface'?

(And, what's up with that GOOG price graph in this story?!)

The original headline was probably "Microsoft permanently slashes Surface Pro price as Google shares tumble," or something similarly clickbait-y . :)

Couple of things they did wrong in launching these devices:

    1) create rumors

    2) don't take down mockups

    3) create ads that signify why people want to buy your product. So instead of this:

Do something that tells a story, like this:

Of course, the device itself has to be a truly working one, also in portrait mode, also useable after unpacked, ecosystem to go with it, and so on and so forth.

The above might be considered lame, but take a look at this and see why people actually prefer to buy from Apple . MS, not so much.

I've heard this theory: that nobody bought a surface pro because of Haswell. Except that Apple sold plenty of MacBook Airs and iPads without Haswell.

In July, Microsoft revealed that it had made only $853 million on the Surface product lineup in its first three months. That number was less than the write-down it was forced to take to adjust inventory, and also less than the $898 million Microsoft spent on an advertising campaign for Surface and Windows 8.

    No, No, No, No!!!

They didn't 'make' $853 M. That was the revenue figure. When you say how much a company 'made', you should be talking about profits.

Why can't they get people who have at least the most basic financial knowledge write articles like this?

You clearly need to go back and read my post again. Take a minute and try to understand what was implied.

Get 'em now while you still can. I wouldn't be surprised if the next Microsoft CEO cancels Surface, writes the whole project off, and blames it all on Ballmer.

But, he/she might pour more money into the project and make it Window 9 or something. Who knows?
