What I don't get is why Apple would put all those nice features in the new iMac, and then have the bus moving data at 100MHz, and only a 256 cache. Doesn't that defeat some of the advantages that a G4 provides? It's like they intentionally did things to both speed it up and slow it down....
Did they do this for mechanical reasons (heat dissipation for example)? Further, if they are going to release the G5 soon, it will almost surely have a 266 MHz bus or something similar - so why leave the new iMac so far behind in that regard? Even if it outsells the PM for a month or so, why not put the new iMac at 166 MHz bus speed and clock the cpus accordingly?
Further, everyone keeps talking about MWTokyo. Since when does Apple announce major products at MWTokyo?
x704, actually, with the iMac ramp-up in March and 12th hour clock analogy also in march, I say new Power Macs at the end of March.

Leaving the PM the same for almost 9 months? No, the current PM line wasn't exactly what I'd call strong when it was released, currently it's very weak (compared to PC's). It has to be upgraded, and it has to be upgraded ASAP. As far as the iMac Ramp-up, yes the $1200 model will ship in March, but the $1800 will ship late this month. Apple cannot wait till March to ship the new PM's. That would be a PM sales disaster.
If they couldn't produce soon with the new PM's they wouldn't have annouced the iMac at MWSF, they would've waited & probably bumped the old models so as to not make the current PM lineup look foolish.
EmAn, did you get to Palisades? Did you stay home from school?
It hardly snowed at all.
Palisades was nice, they gave out free water. It wasn't as crowded as I expected.

Well I didn't get to Palisades and yeah I did stay home from school. Faked having a stomach and headache but then my mom still wanted me to go to school so I waited around in the bathroom for a little bit until I heard my bus came, but then my mom still wanted me to go to school. Finally I stalled long enough and I got to stay home.
I'm not too surprised that it wasn't that crowded. The grand opening wasn't either, so it makes sense.
Well,, I am not rich like most you guys. But a 1799 super drive iMac is what I have been waiting for. All that crazy software,, I love it!! It was way beyond anything I would have expected in this price range. I feel like I am the only excited one here.. I thought processor speed did not matter. Heck I can not imagine how bloated the software must be if it was available on the PC and it probably would need a V. Fast processor.
You guys are to hard on apple. I will be ordering mine very soon.
Thank you apple for satisfying "Joe Consumer" It would not improve my life if you were to come out with a processor a millions times faster. I would not know what to do with it. Keep up the good work on the software.

You know, I was all jack up to send $3000 on a brand new Powermac with a superdrive but you know what - Apple just saved me over a $1000! That is great. Who the hell needs a loud powermac when I can have this thing of beauty!
And yes, a PC can be had cheaper but I want a MAC!
I think your looking at this all wrong, even though I wanted a G5 today myself. If they had thrown in some little speed bump on the power mac, then I would be very sad, but this means something great is coming quick. Apple will not have the consumer line this close to the pro line. I am looking for new PowerMacs before the end of February if not sooner. And I gotta say the new iMac is really gonna sell well. It looks great.
No speed bump for the G4! Apple is still stuck at a pathetic 867MHZ! Intel and AMD are leaving the G4 and Apple in the dust! Macs are so slow!!
People please. Let's put A,B & C together.
A) When does the iMac start to ship? "$1799 model to ship by end of January"
When does Apples "Crystal clear savings" for the Power Mac G4 end? "January 31, 2002"
C) Add A+B & get C. The new iMac won't ship till the end of January therefore the old iMacs are still competing against the current Power Macs. This means that Apple has until the end of the month to annouce the new Power Macs. Expect an annoucement on or before Feb 1.
3) At the new price points, the iMac is more expensive than the G4's.

Jutus, please explain this. Are you seriously saying that because $1800 is more than $1699, (top iMac versus lowest Powermac)? If so, maybe you forgot that the top iMac comes with a 15" LCD and a Superdrive?
We should all be feeling very smug right now. There are millions of people out there who didn't realise they wanted a computer until now. Even my Mum wants one!
For now, wouldn't a quad G4 tower appease the the power users?

I know Apple has released major products at MWTokyo...I just can't remember what it was!!! I think it was an iMac update and the Pismo Powerbook.
Ehhh....ok, I guess those aren't MAJOR..just updates
There's always an "Apple special event". Uh oh...do I smell a forum titled "G5 rising" brewing? eeep

As a matter of fact, both the portable and desktop lines are pretty much seperated by screen size and nothing else.

Hearing that on a board where people have constantly been complaining about how 3 PCI slots are by far not enough is kinda, um, funny.
Bye,

Oh puh-leeze! The base G4 tower comes in at $1699 and that is without a $599 15" display.
The new base model iMac includes the flat panel and a G4 for only $1299. You stuck on "new math?"

Wishful Thinking!!!
They will be updated soon enough I'm sure. If anything, this strenghthens the case for a G5 to ship soon.....

Hopefully.
faster system bus
more possible ram
L3 cache
pci slots
more possible internal drives
etc.
There are still compelling reasons to buy a PowerMac.
