I was obviously being facetious, and by you I meant 'whites' rioting not specifically you yourself.

Do you see that bold word? You think it's unjust to provide advantages to systematically disadvantaged social groups? Shame on you.

By definition putting someone at a disadvantage is unjust.

I think I am qualified to have a valid opinion in this matter as that is where I am from. In Panama we have a broad and diverse genealogy but generally speaking we are of a unique ethnic group. We are Panamanians, even if our heritage is Chinese, European, Indio, black or some mixture. I think of ethic groups as a combination of language, culture, religion, food, location and genealogy for which the limitations of the term 'race' makes it completely unsuitable as a description. Even the words Hispanic, Latino and Latin American are all wrong. We do consider ourselves all Central Americans. Other than the roots of our language and the architecture we really don't have much a connection to Spain any longer.

That's an interesting point insofar that it's not a point of consideration since it's more unlikely to tell who is of these different groups. Part of the unfortunate problem is that we even care about this at all. One-hundred years ago a progressive company in NYC might have tried to hire more Irish or other immigrant group that was populating their city, but today no one cares about your national origins. We also don't see Apple taking a poll of hair color or hair type. Perhaps people with curly hair are more creative¡

People from all over the world went to get work building the canal, and who in their right mind would leave a tropical paradise? ;) Btw I know quite a few Panamanians, all good people, and my running joke is that I can't understand them in 2 languages.

I understood what you meant, but I can assure you that I am not representative of all things that white people do or might have done in the past and will do in the future.

Though, are you seriously comparing the boston tea party, which was a political statement against the British to the hoodlums and thugs rampaging through their own town and neighborhoods, rioting and destroying the businesses of their neighbors? Your comparison is quite strange and not comparable at all, in my opinion.

Excellent NOVA episode from 1999 on the building of the canal.

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you asking if I have ever done anything that could be considered uncivilized? Of course not, I am a highly civilized person, and I don't believe that I have ever rioted or attacked and looted innocent stores. If I see people running around like animals, destroying their own city, then I will call it like it is.

Providing money to disadvantaged African Americans puts white people at a disadvantage. A disadvantage of what? Not being as superior over minority races?

    yeah.

Not when that disadvantage brings that person down from a huge advantage.

It's the term Hispanic I was complaining about. I agree that Panama has a unique culture but the term I would use is "national" not ethnic. The US is diverse but also has a dominant national culture. Canada is similar and they both can be called North American. A super national culture. Central America has a super national culture. Europe too ( which isn't the same as white - Russia is white and Asian ). But these aren't ethnic groups.

You described Hispanic as "ethnic ". That's my quibble.

"Jewish" isn't a "race", it describes a religion.

It's also considered a people and their community that goes well beyond simply following the religion of Judaism. Many people that identify with being a Jewish do not believe in Judaism.

That's the problem. You can't see past yourself which, unsurprisingly, explains why you have so much vitriol for any culture that is different from the one you were born into.

I was jokingly comparing the 2 methods, one is destructive while the other more subdued.

Not a bad thing to have an awareness of these numbers. You can hire the best while encouraging diversity. Let's just not pretend that in doing so, there won't be a few people here and there that are hurt by this drive for diversity.

There's a yin and a yang to it that sort of balances out.

Except there are genetic differences between races.

That's not relevant to me. I don't think dogs or bears or elephants or dolphins look at human diversity and decide to treat groups of humans with one shade of skin differently than those of a different shade. We're just humans to them. Why can't we be humans to each other?

Actually the diverse genealogy of Panama started much earlier than the canal project. Slave traders, gold miners, sugar cane farmers, conquistadors, pirates, indigenous tribes, etc. My town is actually older than the canal by several years. European immigrant gold prospectors became tobacco farmers, later turned to coffee farmers. The Chinese came to work on the canal, though.

It’s relevant, however, to the argument that says race “does not exist”.

We're just humans to them. Why can't we be humans to each other?

Hmm... I don’t really want to attack and eat people... ;)

Ethnic group, or community are becoming scientific substitute words for race because race is untenable.

Not really- Its an ethnic group with a common religion

But that doesn't change my point

No, it's not. It's just a religion, no matter how much a few influential groups wish to artificially create that group...if in doubt, go read "The Invention of the Jewish People". And if you mean Israelis born in the Mideast, they are as "ethnic" as any enslaved Palestinian in Gaza.
