There was not a lot of intermarriage between europeans and native populations in Hispaniola due to the natives being wiped out. Nor was there much intermarriage between the african slaves and the spanish overlords. So it was different than the rest of Central America. There were a lot of spanish speaking blacks but no integration of the cultures, at least not to the extent to what was common in the rest of Central America between the indigenous natives and the europeans.

That doesn't change the matter of the situation: A riot had the chance to break out among stupid people because of the racial tension involving everyone else reached an all high point. That is the sole reason for the riot, not any specific person wanting new sneakers. Discrimination brought the people together, it brought tensions to an all time high, discrimination allowed for people to go crazy.

Collectivist idiocy (identifying with a group, instead of treating people as individuals) leads to riots. Abandoning principles and individual identity in favor of behaving as a mindless mass is not something intelligent people do.

I'm certain he knows that. I like that someone pointed out an old name as I'm sure there are readers that were not aware.

And it gives the word 'mob' a bad name.

From my anecdotal experiences with text-based conversations I feel that I can recognize female v male fairly well based on the manner in which one writes, but can't discern between other classifications.

It's funny how history is different just one island to the east. In Puerto Rico the Europeans married the natives (the few that survived) quite easily. The population grew to the point that very few slaves were needed because there was a work force ready to tend plantations.

    Iberia was blown up?

But the name no longer exists as Hispania or Iberia. Only the term Iberian Peninsula is still in use today. If you want to want to bring it back or name it something else that's perfectly fine but as of right now there is no land called Hispania. It's like saying the Roman Empire exits because the city of Rome exists. The etymologies are linked but are have very different and distinct meanings.

PS: If George Lopez prefers the term Latino that's also false based on his logic since is no Latins. There are now Italians and there are people that speak languages that evolved from Latin.

    Latium |?l?SH(?)?m|
an ancient region in west central Italy, west of the Apennines and south of the Tiber River. Settled during the early part of the 1st millennium BC by a branch of the Indo-European people known as the Latini, it was dominated by Rome by the end of the 4th century BC.

PPS: I can't believe the Mac's dictionary still uses BC and AD.

My first reaction is simple, as yours is, which is to only hire the most qualified people. I'm sure Apple isn't going to be hiring second rate people in order to fill some arbitrary quotas. But, on the other hand, there are many qualified people out there who don't even fill out the forms for large corporations because they are certain they won't be hired by them. Encouraging them to do so, is important.

Even for my companies I often got the feeling from minority candidates that they weren't expecting me to hire them.

But the USA numbers don't look bad. After all, if Apple's employee numbers come anywhere close to the percentages of the USA population, then it's about right, and nothing more can really be done.

As far as the numbers for higher management goes, that's a more difficult topic. When hiring there, mere qualifications mean less. How do you measure the qualifications of a major candidate? That's very complex.

Ah you saved me some typing :). Everyone goes straight to the topic of quotas. If Apple feels a portion of the overall population is underrepresented in its ranks, they should look at their recruiting practices. Nonsense such as quotas is just a lazy method that doesn't address the causes of the perceived problem.

I mistyped. The New Oxford American Dictionary, 3rd edition © 2010, 2012 uses BC and AD.

To me this is partly a regional issue. Here in Silicon Valley most (far from all) tech/www workers are Caucasian or East Indian and many of those are male. Of course there are a lot of Chinese/Korean etc and African American, etc. Most women who are in tech are East Indian with many other races working in project management, PR, marketing, design, etc. However, when I lived in Maryland, many or my coworkers were African-American and East Indian and that was at four different places. There are more "black" people on the east coast in general and more who went to east coast colleges. The population is more dense of African Americans, they don't call DC "chocolate city" for nothing, same for Atlanta Nd other areas. When I moved out here it was unexpected and surprising that I was the only African American on my teams. Been here over eight years and still the only one on my team - several teams and two jobs later (not counting my two levels up manager, and he's originally from Philly). Now almost everyone on my team is from India. So, again to me this is regional and largely based on the local population demographics. Lastly, as someone else stated - many of Apple's employees work in stores where race means even less. Also, it's not everyone who works there are software developers, they have marketing, PR, sales, project management and a lot more - race and gender should mean even less.

"We are making progress, and we're committed to being as innovative in advancing diversity as we are in developing our products."

If that's the case, Apple are going down.

What a pile of garbage emanating from Tim Cook's diverse oral orifice.

I've never seen so much crap from Cook in one article. I can only presume that he does it to set himself a personal challenge. If he can waste that much time on pointless right-on mantra and still top the iPhone and iPad in the future, then he's won.

Glad I didn't have a $500,000 cup of coffee with him.

Steve Jobs...to have had a coffee with him? Priceless.

This saddens me.  I've always seen your persona here as blatantly and unapologetically racist.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who would say you're hands down the most racist poster on this forum.  The unapologetic nature of the racism is what made me at least respect your posts.  While I don't agree with them, you at least appeared to wear your racism with pride.  It's one thing to be a racist and stand behind your convictions, it's another to be racist and claim that you're not.

Unfortunately, this is simply because many programmers and technical people are white men, at least where I am located in Central PA.  I would say the next racial population in the tech field is Indian men.  I'm not sure why this is the case, other than there's something in our educational system that is not leveling the playing field.  It's also not to say that there are not hispanic or black men, or women in the the field, but it's definitely dominated by White and Indian men here.  Kinda makes for boring business mixers!

As said by other commenters, diversity for diversity's sake is not a good option.  I have friends from South Africa where blacks (that's how they refer to themselves over there so please don't freak on me) are hired just to fulfill quotas. Essentially the government said that since 80% of the population is black, that 80% of the employees in every field should be black. Unfortunately they are hiring people that are not qualified for the jobs since training programs are setup to just get them a license as quickly as possible.  This means that those who are qualified are doing extra work and not getting paid for it.  Generally, not a good situation and it's causing more racial tension.

What we need is Apple to invest in training and educational programs in school districts that are multicultural.  I think if we can encourage students of all races and genders to enter the technology field, it will be a better world!

    Your language is despicable.

"Unfortunately, this is simply because many programmers and technical people are white men, at least where I am located in Central PA."

What the hell is 'unfortunate' about many programmers and tech people being white men? It just is. All this hangup people have these days over race and gender; it reminds me of 1984 by Orwell; kind of ironic, given the iconic Apple ad.
