I disagree, Ive can do what he wants whenever he wants. I think apple is expanding and has plans for even more expansion. Jony needs help; someone at his level. 2 heads are always better than one.

I bet he does have a lot of freedom to do whatever he wants, but getting into something new might require Ive's full dedication, and full time. He doesn't strike me as "half-time" person, he will do it full throttle, or will not do it at all. And of course, there's designers' fatigue - you cannot re-invent same items forever, at some point you can be bogged down with your own previous designs - basically your own weight you are carrying, in a way.

Sounds a bit like Adrian Newey, probably the best ever designer of F1 racing cars. He left McLaren years ago - half a decade, maybe more? - with desire to design racing yachts. He was lured to Red Bull Racing by his personal friend (and RBR driver at the time, David Coulthard) and, probably, money offer hard to resist - so he stayed there for a while, creating in a process car(s) that won 4 drivers' and, I think, 4 team championships... but he seems to be growing restless, stories of his finite departure from F1 re-emerging. He achieved everything he could in F1 (especially when you consider his previous successes with Williams and McLaren, in addition to RBR stint), and money is obviously not an issue any more - I can understand his motives. And I could imagine Ive being in the same mind state.

Mr Newson said today that his work at Apple is only part-time and involves one specific project that doesn't require his full attention. He's still available for hire and his company continues on.

Jony Ive is the same I think. Tim has said in the past that he's not involved in the day to day running of Apple. Once the design is done, the operation will go on without them. That's why Ive couldn't take on a role like Tim's, it's too hands-on and full of distractions. He seems to prefer socialising:

It says the Apple board turned down his request for a private jet. He must have intended to use it too much for personal use - he ended up getting Steve's one.

I had no idea (except about the socializing). Thanks for that. I had always assumed that, particularly with his newer responsibilities post-Forstall, he needed to spend a lot of time at Apple.

Nah he can just phone it in now. iPhone 6 - just bigger, thinner and rounder and then they get him in for the voiceover on the video. He lives 1.5 hours away from HQ now (worse if there's heavy traffic), there's no way he's doing a 3+ hour round trip every day. He had enough free time to design all those auction products a while back. They probably just decided to make the watch to give him something to do. Once product ranges reach a certain level in their design, they just need minor tweaks and often it's a drop-in update. The vast majority of the hands-on daily grind will be the manufacturing and marketing operations and software.

A couple of ex-managers tell how it was for them:

Those were people dealing with software. Adding features and fixing bugs is never ending.

Guess I didn't completely understand how Forstall's duties were distributed when he "resigned". I thought I'd remembered Ive becoming the responsible party. Thanks for the link!
