Look, I’m 100% for... what do we want to call it... “stronger” software on a larger touchscreen device (13”, 15”, and the desktop models). I’ve always called it OS XI, as a desktop successor to OS X.
But that’s a big step and anything that comes out this year won’t be that yet. So that means just another modified iOS since OS X isn’t at all appropriate for touchscreens.
Oh, OS XI won’t let you see folder trees, by the way. If anyone thinks that Apple doesn’t intend to hide them from users entirely, you’re just kidding yourself.
Well ...
Apple is kind of easing into folder trees with things like iCloud Drive, iCloud Photos, App Extensions and HandOff ... so, they are not entirely hidden!
For the near future, I suspect we'll mostly see this implemented with/by 3rd-party developers -- for instance the Apple/IBM partnership.
The capabilities of iOS and iOS hardware have grown significantly since 2007. The limit of a flat [no] hierarchy file system sandboxed within a single app is getting long in the tooth and too restrictive for today's needs.
I suspect that Appe will find an elegant way to satisfy the file system needs of both power users and casual users.
Some promisig tech already available in OS X Yosemite and OS X apps are:
file tagging in the finder
keywords, smart collections and filtering in FCPX (including metadata)
metadata filtering in Searchlight
And both OS X and iOS could use an enhanced db [SQLite ?] to interactively and efficiently locate that which you seek ...
After all you don't really want to launch an app to find your stuff ...
Rather, you want to get your stuff, then [let the system help you to select and launch an app to] do your thing ... let the OS, behind the scenes, worry about how to do that best!
Get your stuff, and do your thing ... We [will soon] have an OS for that!
Edit:
Consider the process of using Apple Pay:
The merchant gets your stuff by scanning it into a POST terminal
NFC awakens Apple Pay and helps you select a credit card
You do your thing by touching TouchID
Why can't my iDevice do that for all my stuff?
Siri: You are within 10 minutes of home -- do you want me to turn up the thermostat?"
You: "Siri, write a letter to what's his name -- you know what I want to say."
Have we? What moron would want OS X on a touchscreen?
I wouldn't want OS X on a touchscreen but I would use a hybrid. You know, iOS for the tablet and OS X with a mouse and keyboard. Don't be so close minded. Everyone has different uses.
Laptops are for pros. iPads are for consumers. But there's no reason Apple can't close the gap and appeal to buyers in between.
iWork apps will be better on a 12.2" iPad. They are ready to go pro. And there are plenty of other really creative iPad apps that would be even better on a big screen.
My only concern is that Apple is spreading itself too thin across the iPad line. 3 sizes? Do we need three? Time will tell.
Whenever I see iPad Pro and Surface mentioned in the same sentence, I get terrified, because I hope that the iPad Pro is going to be nothing like the Surface disaster. Why in the hell should Apple copy something that is a flop? If you want a damn Surface, then go buy one! Don't infect Apple with your outrageous and obscene ideas!
I don't want a damn keyboard on the iPad Pro, and I don't want any kind of stand or kickstand. I just want a bigger iPad. It's fine it can run two apps side by side, but don't try to make it into a damn laptop and I also don't want OS X running on it.
Either way, I'll be happy, because I'm very satisfied with my iPad Air 2 128GB. If the iPad Pro turns out to be not to my liking, then I just won't get one.
IBM's new Swift development team may disagree with you.
Add to that -- we have not yet seen a blueprint of the A8X chip ... 3 CPU cores seems a bit odd ...
It could be that the Pro iPad uses a more robust A8X or even 2 A8X chips ... or early A9X chips ...
And what happened to those rumors that the Lightening connector is capable of supporting USB 3.1?
And, since Apple designed Thunderbolt -- could it be included in an iPad pro?
Higher speed connections would allow an iPad to be an additional screen to a Mac ... say for digitizer graphics input for CAD, Medicine or Photography ... or as a customizable touch control surface for video editing ...
Rumour designed to make people hesitate to buy the Ipad air 2 ? Surely not. As much as I'd love a bigger screen, I can't put life on hold and wait for rumoured stuff. I'm getting that Ipad air 2 !!!

There's a lot to like about the Surface. Sure, there are trade offs, but every device has trade offs. I love my iPad but I enjoyed owning my Surface when I did.

A triple core CPU is only odd when you focus on PC's. The Xenos CPU in the Xbox 360 is a tri-core by design, as is the Espresso chip in the Wii U (which is still based on the PowerPC G3 like the Gekko and Broadway processors in the GameCube and Wii).

I've always been critical of "hybrid" products and "convertibles". If I want a laptop, I'll buy one. If I want a tablet, I'll buy one. If I need both, I'll buy both. I don't want both of those to be in one product.
The Pro 3 actually turned a profit... now Microsoft is only out $1.6 billion on the Surface line.
... oh... and the margin was huge... 13.6%!!
No it didn't. That was idiots thinking it made a profit. It generated revenue, which was quickly wiped out by the huge marketing costs and other charges. It also sold, at best, 900,000 units.

You don't have the use the Surface as a laptop. Especially the ARM versions. You can just use it as an enhanced tablet, much like I expect from an iPad Pro.

I heard a rumour Tim Cook is planning a toaster fridge combo. Similar idea I think.

I looked at the Surface Pro 3 and it says that it weighs 1.76 pounds! That is insane, and totally unusable and unacceptable for any tablet.

To be honest, I'd rather have an Apple made fridge and toaster instead of a horrible hybrid tablet." src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />
Apple kitchen appliances would actually be pretty cool, I would buy them for sure!

It's called the iPhone 6 Plus. Not pro.
Surface Pro 3 in its crosshairs? The entire Surface line is *already* a disaster.
Without a viable target in sight, sometime you just have to fire a few rounds in the dirt to make sure everything works.
IBM's new Swift development team may disagree with you.
Right but I think I heard Apple use rear view mirrors with built in laser systems to calculate the rapid rate of separation.

No, fundamental requirements of UX are not close-minded, thanks.

If the iPad Pro doesn't use beefed up chips, or 2 A8X chips, then it'll be weaker than the iPad Air 2.
I think that those 3x graphics assets that we have seen are for the rumored iPad Pro.
if Apple does increase the pixels, but leaves the chips the same, then it will obviously be a weaker performing machine than the iPad Air 2.
2 A8X chips does sound interesting though. The iPad Air 2 is already a beast, imagine a device with double that power?
