They said there was a higher number of Android switchers than ever before and this can be seen from the performance of Android phone manufacturers. The larger models were not for existing customers. If you look at upgrade rates for the older iPhones, they were 55-75%. The latest models are for the likes of India, China and in general, Android people.

The design is also a step backwards for existing iPhone users:

    1000

    1000

The screen is better but not the overall design.

It means more users to upgrade overall in future. If they offer more reasonable sizes and clean the design up, more existing users will upgrade.

Not the overall design based on what? Aesthetics? I love the way the iPhone 6 feels in the hand. Feels much better than the 4 or 5 ever did. I'm using one of Apple's silicon cases and it's just perfect. Yes I agree from a purely industrial design standpoint nothing beats the 5 but I prefer the screen and the curves of the 6. The current design might be a transition period like the 3G/3GS was. I don't think either of those were stunning industrial designs.

As an iPhone user since the 3, I won't be going back from my 6 Plus unless the form factor is discontinued. Moved to the larger iPhone with trepidation but am completely won over. The screen is just big enough now to be useful for more than making calls or texting. I use a minimalist, translucent polymer case which makes the feel perfect. Couldn't go with a bare phone as I'd be worried about dropping. This wasn't an issue with my 5. However, happy to take the tradeoff for a much better phone overall. I hope that Apple keeps this case now and employs improving technology to differentiate models for the near future at least. (Got to comment on touch ID, just brilliant.)

Apples US rate is about 26%. Their worldwide rate is much lower, bringing the average down to (estimates vary) between 10 and 15%.

And have you taken into account all of your taxes? Sales tax? Other stealth taxes?

Apples large income tax contribution in the US does not give them a free pass on other taxes.

Who says they have a free pass? There isn't a worldwide taxing authority so it's not Apple's fault they are taxed the way they are in the rest of the world.

Does Apple effective tax rate include property taxes, sales taxes, etc?

Sorry, that bit wasn't aimed at you, I formatted my post badly.

There are certainly some around here though whose tone of "Apple are the biggest payroll tax payer in the US" suggests that the size of Apple's income tax bill means they shouldn't be criticised in other areas of tax.

    It should do, yes.

[@]Benjamin Frost[/@], I know my previous statement had a flippant and jokey tone, but I am genuinely interested in how you feel about these record breaking unit sales for the iPhone. Do you still think Apple will dump these new sizes for the 4" model?

    No!

I think Apple will introduce a smaller iPhone model either this year or next. It seems more likely to me that they will retain all models. If a new large iPad arrives this year, three sizes for iPhone and iPad looks good. They should reduce the variations of iPad mini, though.

What blew me away when I read the details was Tim Cook saying less than 15% of the sales #s of iPhones were from updaters. I really thought that number was going to be a lot higher. That certainly bodes well for future upside surprises.

    Exactly.

This was the iPhone for Android users in poor parts of the world.

I think splitting assembly lines for addition product lines will help with their growth as well as increase their sales, but I think the larger iPad has a leg up on an extra-small iPhone.

What about the overall design do you think is worse? I think it's the best design they've ever had. The curved cover glass and rolling metal on the edge is a huge step forward in engineering, look, feel, and usability, especially on a larger display.

    Exactly.

Th ARP went up and you believe the iPhone 6 series is for poor people?

Maybe Apple will build a 5.8" phone and get rid of the iPad Mini. ?
