How do we know the Apple Watch is successful?

Because Apple has said so in an analyst conference call? You know, the law, that type of thing?

Frankly I believe the bubble homescreen is one of the weakest links in the ? watch OS. It needs to go in the next iteration. It is of no use.

I'm not a fan of it, and have hated the aesthetic since its reveal. Although, I'd say we are in the minority. Thankfully I rarely see it as my Complications give me access to most of the apps I access.

I am not sure what the big deal is.  Of course Samsung is going to take as many things from what Apple is doing that is possible.  Apple did a lot of things right with the Apple Watch.  This is going to be a non issue as Samsung does not have the ecosystem that Apple does.  It is not just about the watch.

    What an idiotic post.

Rotating the bezel has been around for a while in watches I believe, though I'd think there is more risk for failure in that then Apple's solution.

They forget one think, that Apple has not done yet? With Apple you need an iPhone to make a call from the Watch. With Samsung, you do not need their phone with them to make a call!

Dear Apple Fan Boys wake up, Apple copies from others, not the other way around!

They were copying the Iphone, since they didn'T have a watch to copy... One copy at a time hey... ;-).

Notice how the shading of the Icons on the watch matches Apple's shading just about exactly!

Presumably their Galaxy Gear watches were so successful they funded the development of these "lookers"...  /s

A square would make sense if information display is of concern. The question is: Does it matter?

The early User Experience findings of Nielsen/Norman begs to differ. (A square watch for optimal) information display is not paramount for a watch. In fact, the bubbly home screen - copied by Samsung - is a UX disaster.

The patent is discussing a method of scheduling. Those are Tizen's icons in a 360 degree layout in accordance to the circular dial. The icon layout inside of a circle really isn't anything new.

    Example - BMW's iDrive:

Replace letters with Tizen's app icons. Same functionality.

Read the findings of the Nielsen/Norman Group. Their Evidence-Based User Experience Research on the ? watch is very revealing:

So why do you imagine Apple buys stuff from Samsung instead of doing as you suggest?

Example: I'm working out using the Activity app and I want to skip to the next song using the music glance. Here's the steps I need to go through:

    1. Click the digital crown. This brings me to the apps page.

    2. Click the digital crown again (without double clicking by going too fast). This recenters me in the app screen.

    3. Click the digital crown yet again. This brings up to the watch face.

    4. Swipe up to get to the glances view.

    5. Swipe to the glance you want.

If you want to do it again, there's a different, faster way, but it's still long and annoying. And the stupid friends long button is always there, waiting to be pressed accidentally since I nearly never want to send anyone a drawing or a tap.

If the first thing you do is to is to go to the apps page, why not simply click on the iTunes app?

Hence my comment disproving your assertion that Samsung was mimicking Apple's UI design before they announced Watch.

Those are some good criticisms. Jakob Nielsen has been at the forefront of simplicity and usability for quite a while for web-based content. I was not aware they'd branched out to other forms of UI.

Yeah, that friends button is worthless to me too.  I hope in a future OS upgrade, they will allow you to customize that button to call up whatever app you want.

Not great diagrams given that the images of the watch show lots of the icons outside of your "usable area".

I think the design (what little is shown) looks decent, and not very much like ?Watch at all.  I actually think the rotary-style interface would work really well on a watch for navigation, in a similar way to the iPod wheel.

Well first, my argument is not whether round is good or bad. You're the one who thinks round is evil. 2nd, I specifically said it was irrelevant whether there exists a smart watch similar in size to the Apple 38mm -- just because one may not exist doesn't mean it's not possible. And third, I agree with you that round is purely and aesthetic choice, which there's nothing wrong with, and as I've already stated: Apple is all about aesthetic choices. That's a significant reason people buy Apple products. That's why Apple is now mandating third party products are packaged in complementary Apple Store packaging.

Just because you don't personally like round smartwatches does not mean they can't be designed and engineered equally as well as a square smartwatch, or that desiring a particular shape for a wearable is a bad thing.
