A link to it was posted to a Mac Admins list I am on. I have no info. as to its veracity, and it looks to have been proven to be a Photoshopped Vaio.

I know MacBidouille has posted accurate rumors in the past. But what proves that MacBidouille (or their sources) didn't just mistake a slot-load Combo drive for a slot-load SuperDrive? An official press release would be a lot more credible than this picture.

    PowerBook Superdrive Information...

    <a href="http://www.zdnet.co.jp/news/0210/03/nj00_pdvd.html"; target="_blank">ZDNet Japan Article (Japanese)</a>

Babelfish does a decent translating job on this one. Specifications for both slim tray and slot-loading versions appear to be the same. Write speeds are DVD-R 2x, DVD-RW 1x, DVD-RAM 2x, CD-R 16x and CD-RW 4x. Read speeds are DVD 8x and CD 24x. Availability is said to be toward years' end so November may be a possiblility but it could mean we will have to wait until January. The slim-tray is marked with a production date of July. No indications of a production date on the slot-loading version, probably is just going into production. This could very well be the holdup on new PowerBooks. These will be sold OEM only at first.

KidRed could you cross-post this over on the MacNN "seanyepez" thread for me? Thanks.

I think our last hope for new PB's is to wait till the end of the first week of Nov. With the news of the portable superdrive being available in the latter part of the year, it may be possible to see an announcement in early Nov with shipping occuring sometime in late Nov or early Dec. Just in time (barely) for the holiday season.

If we waited this long, what is two more weeks?

If there is no announcement then, I think it is safe to assume that there will be no new PB's till 2003. And we will be forced (for those of us who need to buy PB's) to buy the current models. I won't be a happy camper if that happens, but what can I do.

*all hope is almost lost* but still hoping new PB's arrive in Nov.

    take care,

Apparently they are releasing a 19inch flat panel, and will use that day to also release Powerbook stuff (or so is the hope). I love how this speculation stuff works. It keeps me from spending money. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

    Translation:

"According to our sources, Apple will (finally) release its new 19" flat screen Tuesday, November 5. Possessing a resolution of 1600 x 1024, like the 22", this new 16 by 10 format monitor signals the death of the legendary Cinema Display.

The line of Apple-branded monitors will therefor become 17", 19" and 23" for now.

Our sources indicate that the 19" will not be available through resale channels [? -ed] until December, because of production delays.

In other news, it seems that Apple will also choose November 5 to introduce a new line of PowerBooks.

    Prudence and patience."

    &lt;rant&gt;We should have nuked the French a long time ago. Those ingrates would still be speaking German if it was not for my father and his generation. &lt;/rant&gt;

As far as PowerBook rumors and 19" displays, I will believe it when I see it. I would personally send a box of croissants to Paris if this turns out to be true.

I have $2500 waiting... just need some specs that don't make me think of giving my laptop some Viagra for its little impotence problem. 667? 800? Am I on candid camera? Hey AAPL- at least give us a break on the price if you are going to give us crappy specs. It would take 1.25 GHz before I would drop $3K on a powerbook. Time for a price drop. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

Excellent reply, Nebrie. As a Frenchman living in the US, I have never understood all that petty hostility, on either side.

As for the new PowerBooks, I agree with ESFOS. I'll believe in a 19" Cinema Display and a Ghz PowerBook when I see them <a href="http://store.apple.com/"; target="_blank">at the Apple Store</a>. Still, I wonder whether the 17" LCD will remain unchanged and what price a 19" LCD will go for.

ok the Snipers have been caught....you may carry on with your Apple speculation now...

as far as the French go...they make great friends once you are friends with then...but they are the ones who are arrogant with americans...they can't except that the world is changing...

As far as the monitor rumor goes...sounds quite possible to me if not probable...Sony has a 23inch that list for $3000 now which has been tempting me...I have seen it street for around $2500 on the net...(pricewatch I think)

Anyway...Anyway so I hope Apple lowers the 23incher to $2500 and then sells it for even less if you by a powerbook/powermac... awe f**** that's still to price...I remember when I bought my dual gigger the retail salesman offered me the 22" for $1900 including the rebate..should have taken it...

I kinda wish Apple would update the look of their monitors though...I am using mine in a music studio and white stands out...I would personally like to see somethin titatium looking...but the Sony is Black front and metal back I believe so that might be the way I go....

I am also wondering if the new powerbooks comeout before January if they will run OS 9? If so they will be the last new product to do so...which may force me to buy it because I may need to run os 9 apps such as KOBLO which will never be ported to OS X (ggggrrrr Digidesgn!!)

oh Sorry if I offended anyone with the Sniper comment...just meant that if we collectively spent all this effort do something productive instead of speculating (which I do as well) we could actually accomplish something meaning full...like kicking some serious sniper ass!!!

    Escher-

My last name is Longchamp. Second generation American. I really do not get it much either. Just really tired of how the French govt loves to trash the US and its goals, no matter what they are. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

As a Brit I find this totally hilarious, what with the ongoing historical friction with our friends across the channel - but the funny thing is that the joke's on the Yanks here, as someone pointed out, if it weren't for the French...

But also, do you jerks know where that big old Statue of Liberty came from - you got it, it was a present from the French! And you want to insult them!?

    Zut Alors! Viva la France.

British defending the French!?!?!?!? The apocalypse is upon us.

What do we Americans care? Last I checked we had kicked both your asses then we were nice enough to save both your asses.

But I do like the Spice Girls and berets so I guess we are all even.
