iChat, unfortunately, doesn't appear very different from earlier betas. I hold out hope that Apple will implement the ability to customise our profiles, as can AIM and AOL users (although, from a corporate-prudence standpoint, AOL probably wouldn't let Apple do that).

With regard to the System Software, an interesting new pane has made itself available in 7B49 (apologies if this was already mentioned elsewhere): Hardware. Attached are links to screenshots.

    System Prefs Screen

    Hardware Pref Pane

    Pref Pane and System Menu

We can apparently modify whether or not certain caches are used, or possibly even how much of each. I cannot defend necessarily mucking around with it, however--my impression is that this is a feature for highly advanced users.

That's not a new pane, but rather the prefpane that gets installed by the CHUD (Computer(?) Hardware Understanding(?) D(?)) suite, which has been around for a long while. I suspect this is merely a debug feature that will not make it into the final release.

Ah, that was quite stupid of me. I installed the full suite of developer tools, including CHUD, but overlooked this. Please disregard my earlier post...

Yep, CHUD-a-rooski. A lot of times software developers will ask beta testers to install those tools before starting their testing program to get hardware-specific information about the machines in the beta pool.

yea, i'll never understand the lack of profile editing in iChat, thats one thing id love to see appear to it, though i am glad that when i have 5 windows minimized in my dock and one replies they give it a flashing badge icon rather then let me try and guess who said something like in iChat 1.0

Well, unless something more is posted soon, I guess the whole "check back for more information" thing on Apple's Panther preview page is not what I expected. I figured they might drop a few more hints, maybe add a new feature in there. But mostly likely all it means is, "check back after the official ship date announcement in Paris for the full-blown Panther site (but no new features beyond what we've already seen).

Hey, cool! The Installation Setup Assistant in 7B53 uses the Keynote cube effect to transition between steps.

Ack! But the text entry cursor isn't appearing in the textarea where I am typing this post in Safari. And when I blur the focus of the text field, all the text but the first line turns white so I can't see it. But if I select all in the textarea it becomes visible again.

One pointless feature: added. One necessary feature: broken. Bug report: sent.

That's happening in Omniweb in Jaguar (which also uses Webcore) for me.

I will have to say, I did a full erase and install. So that might've helped.

Anyone know if in these latest builds of panthers, thet issue of sound going out of balance, after you lower, or put up the volume rapidly, or while the processor is under load, has been resolved?

This happens to me in Jaguar from time to time. I didn't know that the volume keys / system load was the cause. Interesting...

yeah I thought they might unveil something at the last minute too. Anyone remember if that happened with Jaguar? Or were the developer builds pretty much feature complete?

To the best of my knowledge, Apple has not done a preview of one version of OS X while there was a part of the site dedicated to a different version. Not prior to this year's WWDC anyway.
