You've characterized the opposition to Bush's *joke* as Puritanical and angry to the point of spontaneous combustion. I don't think you're doing yourself a favor here in the accuracy of perception department...
Wow. Just wow. Can't say anything on these boards without having some <censored> take a metaphor literally. Jeez. Grow up man.

I *understand* that people don't spontaneously combust. I didn't take it literally. I just thought you used a pretty extreme metaphor to describe our basically measured responses... thus your perception of things here seems really skewed.

Measured responses? You act as if he molested children.
Do you seriously think those words describe our responses here (or the responses from those who oppose the President's *joke* in general)? I know how I feel, and I'm rather good at discerning my own tone when I write...all that leads me to believe that you're greatly exaggerating things- for whatever purpose- I don't know. But it doesn't really shed light on anything. On the other hand, you sure are pretty hostile to those who took the *joke* differently.
All of a sudden, our reactions are puritanical, angry to the point of spontaneous combustion, and characteristic of discovering a child molestation... No, not quite, but I think the President's actions beforehand were reprehensible enough without openly mocking his own war rationale.. It just compounds for things for me. Try to understand how I feel here.
Frankly it's that kind of attitude that is behind the FCC witchhunts and the restricting of freedoms in this country. I find you and people like you to be part of the problem. I'm so fvcking fed up with people always being so god damned fvcking offended.
You are really no different than Ari Fleischer with his "watch what you say" comments. Two sides of the same coin.
Ari Fleischer: Press Secretary to the President of the United States, issuing a warning to the citizenry during the aftermath of 9/11, when tensions are extraordinarly high and there is a sense that to criticize the president borders on treason.
ShawnJ: poster on an internet forum expressing his distaste for the president joking about the empty rational for a conflict that has killed nearly 600 American soldiers.
Certainly no grotesque distortion of equivalence there...
Bullshit. Something can be "offensive" and funny at the same time. Rape can be funny. As George Carlin says, "Picture Porky Pig raping Elmer Fudd."
Questionable if that is funny, but the analogy would be joking about sending a secretary to get some mail that you actually didn't need who was raped on the walk back. Showing slides of yourself waiting impatiently by the door, saying "Now where's that mail? Darn her, she is so slow!"
I might find something funny that someone else finds repulsive.
People obviously have different ideas and opinions concerning humor and what is deemed funny, so arguing about it like this has no real point. Especially when those arguing are not likely to change their stance anyways.

Certainly humor is subjective.
But most people have a sense of context and appropriateness.
For instance, you might think a sick joke about dead babies to be a real knee slapper, but still understand that for a person to tell such a joke in front of a parent who had recently lost a child would be almost unspeakable.
If somebody did that and you called them on it, wouldn't you be taken aback if the response was "Oh, get over yourself, everybody is so freaking sensitive about everything!"
Now the difference between the scenario I describe and the scenario at hand is, I would say, one of empathy and imagination rather than kind.
Bullshit. Something can be "offensive" and funny at the same time. Rape can be funny. As George Carlin says, "Picture Porky Pig raping Elmer Fudd."
Cartoon characters aren't real people. Sure, Bush Jr. is more of a caricature than a human, but we're talking about the real humans that died.
Offensive and funny can certainly co-exist. Killing people generally isn't funny. Even if it can be funny for some, for those that don't consider it funny you can't automatically claim it's 'mock' outrage. It may very well be genuine.
This is clearly one of those situations where once again people can't hold two conflicting thoughts in their heads at once. I'm clearly not going to convince the hypersensitive people here so I'm just going to declare this a lost cause and move on.

This is a real, serious, situation that cost many lives and dollars. I'm not one to back away from making fun of real situations this just isn't one of them.
The implications that our president can lie ( or just be unbelievably wrong ) about an expensive life and death situation that he caused is just not tolerable under any circumstances.
When I've made fun of the circumstances of this situation in the past it's been the ludicrous attempt by some to defend or put a positive spin on this situation.
The truth is the picture of Bush making light of this just isn't funny or acceptible.

Clearly your entire premise is wrong because I found the comment funny and acceptable.
I also think that Bush has some serious questions to answer and should not be reelected.
Gee, I can find it funny, acceptable, and hate Bush and want him ousted all at the same time! I'm fvcking talented.

I see it doesn't do much for you- that's okay.
Get over it. It's a freaking joke.

This statement is full of crap. Would it be OK to make fun of a child that was molested simply because they were molested?
If you're responsible for murder and death, it's not funny.
