I don't think it's a thumb, btw. I think it is a wrist. if you hold your wrist down and away from you, as one would in this pic, you get that same concave angle.

anyway, It is a dang convincing fake if one.

I am sitting here looking at my Powerbook 15" box, and the styrofoam inserts, and the box they are in are identical. So is the apple logo on the side. I don't pretend to know what's IN that Powerbook box, but that's definitely a Powerbook box.

    Edit; sticky shift key.

It's amazing that this thing can be any size you want it to. In the first photo, I think it looks very large. But in the second photo, with a hint of a thumb up there, it looks excedingly small.

I don't think it looks small at all.

In fact, consider that the section of thumb showing is, what, 1.5-2" long? That means that the bezel area is about that thick, and the whole thing, with the bubble out back, is easily big enough to hold a mobo. Now go back to pic #1, and extend that scale... it's at least a 17", if not a 20" or 23".

    It's not tablet sized. Period.

It's different than my new 23", which does have a white strips on both sides (with control buttons on the right side) and is not as thick on the back. The back looks like it has something added to the display - either by Apple or through Photoshop.

As for the box, just checked mine and the side that has the Apple logo on the side in the pic has a side view of the display on my box. Also, the styrofoam inside my box is a far different shape than the one in the picture.

Flip a coin to see if it is real, but there is a chance it is. Just wonder about all the other parts (cords, manuals, CDs, etc.) that would have come with it.

    PS. I do LOVE my 23" - it's glorious!

This is just a wild theory (so nothing out of the ordinary for this forum! ) but after Apple had to fess up that they were working on the new iMac, that it would be G5 and that it would ship in September, what if they decided to be extra carefull about keeping the new machine top secret - so much so that they shipped a load of decoy iMacs!

It strikes me that there is quite a large black gap between the screen and the aluminium housing of this product. That's why I think it's actually a plasma screen doctored by Apple to look like a possible iMac G5 - just put an aluminium cover over the original case and slap a little Apple logo on it.

It really wouldn't surprise me if Apple did something like that - it's also quite encouraging because if it is a decoy, they would make it look as little like the real thing as possible - I really don't like that thing in the pictures - not as my new iMac anyway!

What's more likely - that Apple has gone to all this trouble, or that somebody's having a laugh?

That could be any one of a hundred generic flat panel TVs out there.

Also, that's about the ONLY angle you can view a Powerbook box from without revealing that it is indeed a Powerbook box. There are images of a powerbook on top and bottom, and text on the other 3 sides.

Those circles on the floor don't have to be an inch across, we have them in our toilet at work and they're much smaller.

Doesn't anyone think this could be the apple "tablet"? or even a 15 inch "smart screen" for use with desktop? - something that you can use on the desk / carry round the house / office?

    This sounds very plausible.

I totally agree... but wouldn't it need somekind of docking station to recharge?

Or would that be sold seperately?

I think the loss of the articulating arm and the samll dimensions point to this being mobile if it is the Imac.

    A wireless Imac.

Oh yeah, and the fact that it's too big to even fit inside the bloody box, and that the box has a handle just like a Powerbook box.

Believe me, if it weighs anything like a 20" iMac, you wouldn't be putting a handle like that on the box.

Well yes, I suppose you're right - It would be an awful lot of trouble to go to. Knowing Apple's eye for detail, if they were to got to the trouble of creating a decoy I think they'd probably do a better job - create fake boxes at least, not just bung the thing in a PB box.

didn't they put weights in the base of the 20 inch iMac because the monitor weighed so much? Did I hear that or no?

Yeah this is a bit fishy. But those folks asking where the keyboard, mouse and other peripherals are: Its in the styrofoam on the left, that's been flipped up. Apple doesn't toss in the keyboard and mouse in the same area as the cpu, they put it on top; its the first thing you see when you open a box, with the manual, etc. You then pull up the top styrofoam casing and that reveals the cpu. I don't know though, I can't see really where the stand is, and that bulge in pic #2 does look a bit weird. I just unwrapped a 23" display last week and this looks different.

Yep I think so but re-read the initial post...

"My friend who works in the Charles De Gaul airport posted this pic on my .Mac account. Says they've been unloading stacks of heavy computer boxes all weekend. Took a look inside one in an elevator..."

Bolding was done by the author not me...

That pretty much kills the tablet idea... Unless of course people think heavy tablets with protrusions on the back would be a good thing. After all the tablets that Moses had were heavy... but even they had smooth backs IIRC

If it's not an iMac it could be the new 17'' inch cinema display. It would fit inside a 17'' inch powerbook box. the base could be attached separately.
