Apple packages its new hardware very carefully, as you all know. When you place a new hardware box on the floor, flat in front of you so that the picture on the upper surface is rightside up, then the box will open away from you. All of the Apple logos will be upright from this perspective, including the logos on the hardware inside. The logos on the side of the box will have their base toward the end of the box that opens.
If you look at the box in this photo, you will notice that the apple logo on the side of the box is upside down when viewed from the box's front!! The item in the box is packaged in the correct orientation according to Apple's packing standards. However, the apple logo on the side is upside down! Once again, it is upside down!
The color of the hardware is also flat grey! I guarantee you that Apple is not going to design a cool new piece of hardware and then paint it flat grey.

I thought flat grey didn't look right either... but in the second pic it looks different... like stainless steel or something.
i agree that the casing looks different shades and textures of grey /alum/steel, but i also noticed that in the first pic with the flash on, the screen looks matte, but with the flash off in the second pic, the screen looks glossy. perhaps it was the overhead light in the "elevator", but i always thought that apple lcd screens had a matte finish. i even tested this with my laptop screen. unless of course apple or whoever put some sort of protective transparent casing over the actual lcd.
The panel you are looking at is a generic LCD monitor made by some third party nobody. My guess is that it is non functional so the perp can monkey with it. The panel has no stand and is leaning back against the styrophoam (the only thing holding it up).
We all want to believe that the iMac will be revealed prior to Monday pm or Tuesday am. Apple has people monitoring these forums (thats how they are able to insist that pics be removed so quickly). If the pic was real, we would no longer be looking at it.
Also, do you all really believe that Apple, the king of industrial design, with huge successes such as the iMac, iMac G4, G5, iPod, etc, really make something that looks so . . . average? If you believe this, then you sell them short. I for one believe that Jonathan Ive and Steve Jobs' reputations are on the line here and they would never create such a basic looking machine as this (note the squared-off edges and industrial grey color) funky looking monitor!
Have faith, fellow mac crazies! You will be rewarded.

No. The Apple logo is right-side-up if you stand the box up, with the handle on the top. I had my powerbook box (15"AI, bought April, mf'd. ~Nov. 03) sitting next to me while I viewed the photos, and that is absolutely a Powerbook box. The Apple is oriented the same.

I totally agree with you... unless it is wireless!
If it is wireless then the design makes sense. It is like a powerbook.
I don't know if this is a hoax or not, but I'm looking at the side of my PB 15 box with the top opening the same way as the box in the photo, and the Apple is positioned the same on my box as on the one in the photo.
And what if monkeyastronaut is right? He's mentioned a couple of times that it could be a plasma screen TV. Why not? Steve Jobs keeps talking about exciting products coming this year and we've all heard about the Apple job postings requiring video background and skills.
Just a thought. Didn't want monkeyastronaut thinking nobody was reading his posts.
Rumours say the design is simpler than the iMac 2.
It looks like the kind of machine Apple might be trying to push into the 'home'.
Hence the plain appearance... It's very thick, though. About the thickness of an X-Serve standing up? Bolted onto a 23 inch display. Looks really big. Seems feasible to me.
The pics of the G5 may have been accurate, but the G5 is revolutionary in its industrial design. It resembles absolutely nothing else in the world. The grey box in the photo looks like every other LCD monitor on the market, except for Apple's. And if it is a TV, then it looks just like every other LCD TV on the market as well. Apple is far more creative than this.
Besides, what is the monitor going to stand on? Do you think that Apple is going to release an iMac that requires you to hang it from the wall, or buy an expensive VESA arm?
It is possible for an airport employee to open a box while in transit. After 9/11, all cargo has to remain unlocked and easily opened in the case of random inspections. Customs agents and Airport security can open any package at any time. In the past, I have heard reports of cargo staff taking advantage of the situation to go through passengers luggage to steal valuables. BTW, Immigration has nothing to with the situation unless an Apple employee was hand carrying those tons of boxes with him while traveling but that's not likely.
I don't know if these pics are real but I do believe that the situation is entirely possible.

You are accurate, IF you are talking about freight aboard a PAASSENGER plane. Cargo delivered via air freight (such as UPS, FedEx, etc.) does not travel through the same security, as the plane is not carrying any "passengers".

Again, if this were real the prick is clearly not doing this as part of his job description. He is opening up someone's package on his own time for kicks. He's doing this in an elevator for crying out loud! Also, if this was on it's way to an Apple Store or customer it must now be sold as a used or open box item.
By the way, where the hell is the rest of it? No stand? No keyboard? No mouse? No software? No manual? My, that certainly is revolutionary! Did he just jump all this on the floor of the elevator? Why is it not widescreen? Why does it come in a "pro" box?

These people would not be unloading "stacks of computer boxes" as that would be a major security concern for Apple. Everyone would have pictures of the new stuff and the possibility of damage and theft would be extraordinary. They would be unloading crates, or cargo containers, as air freight is not packaged like the stuff that comes to you via the RC Willey truck.

That's the sound of the nail being hit on the head...

I can't tell which one is the true finish.

Looks like a 'motherboard' behind it.
Not unconvincing, though.
Doesn't look too Alu to me, though.

Nobody thought the G4 Tower pics were real...
Lemon Bon Bon
PS. If it is a 3rd party LCD, which one?

While this is not the new iMac, it is much more true to what Apple would release than that thing in the phony black box.
