My youngest son does video editing on this G4 imac....it only has a 1 gig CPU and a 80 gig HD with 768 meg of ram..I don't think there is much more I could do with this to make it better for him. When he sees his older brother's new imacG5, this one may all of a sudden loose it's luster.....I hope not, i really like this lamp style G4.......

I was professionly editing with rigs slower, and with less memory than that for years. The only difference were the external raids.
Of course a raid with four one Gig SCSI drives with a total transfer speed of seven Megabytes/sec was still much slower (and smaller) than his internal 80 Gig drive.

frank, i reckon the new iMac g5 2ghz with 1gb of ram and the now-fully-utilised 250gb hard disk 7200 rpm, is going to be really sweet for your son that's getting the g5.
i'm the youngest boy of 2 boys in my family, i'm 26 now and ran into some credit card problems last year... so now its back to me watching my older brother with a faster machine - part of life i guess, till i save up for myself but i think i've learnt to make the most use of what Mac i have... part of my credit card problemas came into being because of a desperate desire to be a really really great artist with the fastest mac out there...
the iMac g5 is a great bargain now, any more power and you'd be looking at a dual 2.3ghz powermac g5 with 2gb of ram or so ~ as a father and it being your moolah, you might think that's a bit too much for now
overall in terms of value even as video and web and multimedia professionals, unless you are in a hardcore studio billing $200 an hour ++ ; the iMac is great value overall. 1 gb is sweet unless like melgross iIRC mentioned, you are working on very very big files, say for huge billboard advertisments or something like that in photoshop...
edit: or say like a 300dpi print ad with tons of photoshop layers and stuff
enjoy oh and can you adopt me and get me an iMac g5
I'm far from rich, but I guess that when you spend thousands to put your kids through college, what's a few more to buy them the mac's they need? I'm just rolling over and playing dead when it comes to spending on the college/computer thing........In fact, the son who is getting the new imac G5 just told me that while we were on the mac subject, his old 2nd generation 10 gig brick ipod is dying.....so I might as just add a new ipod to the shopping list....
Actually, I'm thinking that since i'm getting his "old" powerbook, maybe I'll give him my 3 month old 20 gig ipod, and just buy myself a shuffle....
We'll see......
Heck, I'm 47 years old....I'm proud that I even know what an ipod is....I love my ipod....but if all of my music will be on my powerbook, the shuffle should meet my needs.....
my dad's 67 now and it's all planning for retirement time and winding up the business...
My friend's mother lives in an assisted living home in Arizona. He gave her an iMac several years ago to use e-mail and to go on the web. She didn't want it because she thought it would be too complex.
He brought to her, set it up and tought her how to use it. Now she uses it several hours a day,
Today, I was at a picnic/yard sale that was jointly thrown by a couple Mac user groups and during a conversation about the new iMac he said the screens in the iMac are user serviceable, but that was news to me. I know the memory, hard drive, and AirPort card are, but I never heard anything about the screen. Is he correct?
Yeah absolutely everything in the new iMacs is modular and can just be swapped. Of course some components are stuck as a unit, ie. the midplane. You have to swap all of it to swap any part.

hmm let me guess... the GPU is on the midplane right?
Photoshop and some other programs let you see if the program is working efficently. InPhotoshop, the menue for that is at the bottom of the file window on the left side. If you are at 100%, it means that you have enough memory for that file, and are not doing disk swaps, which is what slows the program (and everything else) down.
There is no matched RAM with the iMac G5. You don't get double the memory path. It's a simple addition to the memory size.
Wow.. never knew what the percentage indicated in Photoshop. Do now though.
About the RAM.. I'm almost certain that it does matter whether you have matched pairs. The Xbench tests (I know.. not the greatest test around but it is widely used) definitely seem to show a useful increase in speed when matched pairs are used. I think this is due to the way they operate in 128 bit mode in matched pairs.. can someone confirm this?
by the way, it has not been really mentioned or advertised but the new iMac g5 has digital optical out
that means you can swing it into a sweet logitech z-series 5.1 dts and dolby digital decoder setup for a pure digital signal into the logitech amp/speaker setup ... great for personal home theater and surround sound on the iMac 20" for dvd watching. games should be cool too because you can use the pro logic 2 on that logitech speaker set to simulate 5.1 from a 2.0 source
I don't know if anyones mentioned this already (and yes, I did search the forum) but Apple now lists the lower fan in the Rev. B iMac 17" G5 as being user replaceable!
I have a real problem with the noise from my iMac g5 (Rev.A) and Apple are replacing the entire machine (after they tried replacing the powers supply). It's worked out that I'll get the new iMac G5 17" 2.0 ghz with Airport included! Apple's support and after sales team have been amazing about it. I was still worried that I'd end up getting another duff one with a screeching fan whine, but now I know it's user replaceable I'm very happy.
Edit: Seems to be the quartz graphics scores that are different - mine is higher in some parts than the other machine (probably due to network). Maybe the memory affects this score more thn the actual memory score as this is virtually the same.

dude, i'm very happy for you that they are looking at your 17" fan noise issue, and that you will be getting the new 2.0ghz with AIRPORT and with ATI RADEON 9600 and with NEW HD CONTROLLER ISSUES SORTED OUT IIRC (see the xbench on the revB iMac g5s' hard disk)
the fan noise was the last issue i have been concerned about with the new iMac g5, and this is pure and classic apple, taking in the feedback, and working through the solution to deliver a absolutely kick-azz revB iMac g5.
Is the voltage to the lamp lowered or is the lcd layer kept more opaque?
sorry peoples,
it is the brightness of the sleep light
"Great ambience
When you put your iMac G5 to sleep, you may become captivated by its pulsating sleep light. But in low-light environments, a sensor detects the room?s ambient light and adjusts the sleep light to match, so you and your iMac G5 can both catch some Zs"
nice
there's been a few times when i've had to put a shirt or something over my sleeping iBook (and before that PowerMac g4) so that my bedroom isn't glowing when i'm trying to go to sleep too..

That's interesting. I've been told by people at Apple that it's incorrect.
But maybe they're wrong.
