This is exactly what I want with Apple's AppleTV. I say though, throw in a BD recording drive so we can record movies on BD disc. I think it would be awesome, what do you guys think? I think it would be an ultimate entertainment device.
If/When Sony pays Apple and have PS3 running MacOS X Leopard/iTunes, I'll will buy PS3 over the aTV or the Mac mini at $599 price tag.
I guess, this would be one way to move PS3 off the retail shelf. Come on Sony....pay Apple.... please.... lure me to buy PS3....
Ah, yes. Redbox machines. There's been one near my house for a couple of years now - I guess we were lucky enough to be one of the test markets before they went wide. Very handy little machine.
I quite liked Hot Fuzz, so I'm sure I'll end up with it on SD-DVD sometime soon.
Perhaps, you can take advantage of the combo disc. Just in case......
Interesting how thats changed in a few days, but at least it was predictable
this was posted on the 29th of July and I agree, look at what had happened in three days. Looks like the cheaper HD-DVD players started flexing it's muscle.
I personally don't believe much in these charts due to HiDef market still being so tiny. Hence, few days can change many things for the HiDef movie format. Now, let's see how long it takes for BD to catch up.
Blade Runner became available for pre order in two different editions on both formats, and they are all in top 10, and if you look at titles outside the top 10 they haven't moved much in ranks.
And again: they are ranks and doesn't really say much about actual sales for both formats as a total.

HaHa Don't you love dynamic linking brilliant, and I think we all (barr one) agree that Rankings mean diddley, you know who I'm talking about murchy
I'm currently at home suffering with some kind of bug for the last few days feeling terrible <BLUGH> So I have no interest in arguing today BUT I have to say this thread (and the previous ones) have been most interesting, I rather oddly feel "part of" this "war" its been fun to see everyone chip in their info, reports, statistics and opinions about the ups and downs of both formats, the "wisdom" and "stupidity" of various studios and backers, the price drops the scandals, and the general asperations of members in regard to format choice. A damn good read, plenty to roll ones eyes at and a lot to laugh about.
All good stuff thats provoked thought and made me consider what format worked "for me"

Can we stop with the goddamned sales rank charts. THEY DON'T MATTER. You're embarrassing yourself.

Wow, and with a blockbuster like Bourne, HD DVD still couldn't even muster their way out of the 30 percentile. Goes to show you, HD DVD is a dead format walkin'.
Marz, the sad thing about the release titles that you listed is there's only one decent title, The Bourne Identity, and one marginal, The Scent of Women, the rest border on crap. Studios must think HD format adopters will buy anything and everything they put out. They need to start releasing some of the quality titles they have locked in their vaults.

I agree, but Blu-ray had NO decent titles, and to me HD DVD had 1 blockbuster and 2 marginal titles--Scent of a Woman and In Good Company. Regardless, you'd think with a title like Bourne HD DVD would do a lot better, but IMO it is quite telling about the user base in each camp. Clearly, Blu-ray has a lot more people watching movies.

I wouldn't judge too much on the nonsene nelson stats, but I do agree that many of the Hidef(HD & BD) release titles have been somewhat disappointing. I am not sure what drives the HD release list, but the demographic of HiDef movie renters/purchasers have been somewhat defined. BD mostly being the PS3 owners focussed on atypical genre as where HD-DVD crowds are little more spreadout. When you see a movie like Norbit doing okay in the box office, that says alot about the audience and what is driving the studios on the HiDef release list.
I actually had not bought any of the listed titles including Boune Identity HD-DVD, and had not even seen this movie either. I will give it a rent first in SD(I'm sure it's worth $1)...... then I'll decide later. I still haven't received my HD-DVD copy of 300 & Hot Fuzz and still haven't run out of things to watch in HD-DVD...... but there should be more decent titles coming throughout the year.
Yup... The Host was pretty decent title. I have it on my amazon cart...... My wife hates these scifi movies....so i have to find a title to bundle this with what my wife would like.... some chick flick....

You need to share that with rest of your team... pass one along to sdw2001.

I'd be down with that. I think OS X would be much more elegant than simply a version of Linux.
Although I think I'd spring for a solution from Apple (a BD capable AppleTV) before one from Sony.
<edit>But Apples solution wouldn't come with games...hmmm.
LOL...
Try to imagine where this domino's going:
Blockbuster in trouble: (Close All The Stores)

Sony PS3 in trouble(lawsuit):

..... I guess we can't really call this a domino effect on just two bricks...

300 on HD-DVD clearly superior to Blu-ray.
