    Ok.

I bit the bullet this weekend and am throwing both feet firmly into the next-gen puddle.

First of all, I'm selling my 47" Panasonic rear-projection television to whomever will take it off my hands. It doesn't support 1080p, it doesn't have HDMI, and I'm moving in the next 3 weeks and no longer want to lug around a 170 pound behemoth. I don't care for owning an electronic device so large I have to rent a truck to move it.

I placed an order for the Samsung 46" LCD 1080p HDTV ? model LNT4665F. I also ordered two HDMI cables, an HDMI to DVI cable, the VGA connector for the xBox 360, the HD DVD add-on for the xBox 360, and a free movie of my choice from Amazon (I chose 300). The xBox add-on is the cheapest way to experience High Definition DVDs, and HD DVD has the most titles I'm interested in at this time. My plan B, if I need one, will be to pick up the Samsung BD-UP5000 (or equivalent) if Blu-Ray becomes a necessity and when combo player prices are more reasonable ($250-$500).

Now, I ordered everything from Amazon because they had the best prices on everything, but lord only knows when the stuff will actually arrive because...it's Amazon

    Home Theater Group Backs Blu-ray

Organization says installers are favoring the high-def format.

    http://www.tvpredictions.com/homeblu092407.htm

    Quote:

Washington, D.C. (September 24, 2007) -- Home Theater Specialists of America is endorsing Blu-ray over HD DVD in the high-def disc format war.

That's according to an article by TWICE Magazine.

The HTSA, which represents Home Theater installers and high-end CE stores, says a survey of its members found that 92 percent of their high-def player sales have been Blu-ray players.

The remaining eight percent were HD DVD players or combo units that playback both formats.

TWICE reports that the HTSA believes its endorsement of Blu-ray will "strengthen retailer commitment to providing more (Blu-ray)-based devices to meet growing consumer demand.?

?The industry looks to HTSA as an expert for custom Home Theater, built upon a foundation of the top consumer electronic retailers across the country,? said HTSA executive director Richard Glikes, according to TWICE. ?Based on our member research and observations in the field, it is clear that HTSA customers have made Blu-ray Disc their preferred HD format for movies and other packaged video content.?

Glikes said the group's members say Blu-ray offers more disc capacity and better resolution than HD DVD.

Another week, and yet another backer of Blu-ray.

    Congrats!...

I had ordered about 60 HD-DVD's from amazon, and it's pretty quick if order gets shipped locally(three to five days from ordered date). I rarely shop at the local retails due to inflated pricings. I've also ordered my HD-XA2 from Amazon and only took about 4 days or so. If you don't mind the wait, Amazon is cheapest source to buy HDM. Many early adopters qualifying for 2006 promo gets additional 10% off all the HDM purchases through out 2007.

BTW, the 5 free HD-DVD rebate does take awhile to receive, so expect about 8 to 9 weeks of wait time.

I've read that the xbox360 can do 1080p24 via VGA, so I hope your new HDTV does accept 1080p from the VGA input.

Precisely, the HTSA are choosing a format, Blu-ray that will more than likely allow them to see profits, and it is being chosen handily (BY THE CONSUMER) over HD DVD. 92%...that's what I call decisive.

So what will be the draw to HD DVD from a retailer's perspective? Standalones at thin to no margins? Hmm, economics class at 11...

Here is an excerpt I liked from the original article (my emphasis added)...

    http://www.twice.com/article/CA6481073.html

Glikes cited greater device capacity, better resolution, larger manufacturer adoption and content availability as deciding factors for consumers in choosing one high-definition disc camp over the other.

In a statement, Jay Vandenbree, president of consumer sales for Sony Electronics, Blu-ray?s chief proponent and developer, lauded HTSA?s move. ?At a time when ever-changing technology tests just how much one can know about everything, HTSA has chosen Blu-Ray Disc as the format they support. I think it speaks volumes when support comes from those who specialize in home theater, and are closest to the consumer.?

The Seattle Times in their Monday Business section runs a feature called "Tech Snapshots". In today's Snapshot there'a a survey called "Our Electronic Lives", which makes interested reading.

The survey, run by ABI Research asked asked respondents which consumer-eloectronics devices they owned. Some of the results.

    Personal computer 89.4%

    DVD player 84.5%

    HD-TV 18.1%

    HDM DVD player 4.2%

No information on how many people were polled. If these figures are accurate, HDM has a very long road to go in order to gain consumer acceptance.

One can start talking about a BD victory when Universal lives up to its name, Paramount goes back to producing BD and HD-DVD's share shrinks to 10-20%. Until then, anything can still happen.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a BD supporter and would like nothing better than to see HD-DVD disappear so we can get on with one format and a better chance that HDM will make it other than as a niche market. But I'm also a realist and know that the odds of that happening in the near future is pretty remote.

In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy the HDM of my choice. I'm looking forward to watching Kingdom of Heaven again this weekend.

If your football analogy holds, Blu-Ray is winning but hasn't won...just like at half time the Titans were winning, 10-7. Now they're losing 14-10, but haven't lost. .

Of course, the game might go into triple overtime and the stadium might run out of beer. Then we're all screwed.

I guess, the numbers don't look too bad. Now, out of 4.2% with HDM DVD player, how many have the real HDM Players vs. how many have HD upconverting DVD players thinking it's a HDM player.?

It doesn't say much about the long-term prospects, though. I'd have to see figures for other new CE technologies at the one-year point to make a comparison. How did CDs compare with records and cassettes? VCR penetration at one year? I don't believe either of those had hit 4% after the first year, but that's just my impression from memory.

Thanks! On the first day, the HDMI to DVI and VGA cables shipped. The xBox 360 add-on, 300 on HD DVD, and the two HDMI cables have yet to ship. This morning, I ended up canceling the tv and opting for a slightly more expensive model they had just added to their website. Otherwise, I'm guessing the tv would have shipped today if I had not done that. Not sure what the hold-up is on the other goods though. If everything was indeed instock, you'd think they'd all go out in 24 hours

I figured as much. I noticed in the fine print that if they're out of one title they'll swap it for something you didn't want instead; heard of anyone who ended up not getting what they requested?

It does. Both the xBox and the tv will accept/output 1080p over both VGA and Component, but the xBox 360 HD DVD add-on will only upscale standard definition DVDs over VGA; hence the need for the VGA connector

    Where have you been?...

Sony had been claiming victory since last year. In every CE events from then on, Sony was the Victor and this hidef optical format war is over for Sony.

Has Sony started claiming victory over the game console market, yet?.... Or spreading rumors about Halo3 coming to PS3?....

Soon, PS3 will claim victory over the AppleTV, iTunes, and as a ultimate personal HTPC market. Maybe, we'll see portable slim designed PS3 to compete with MacBook Pro.

I need to go buy PS3 soon before the demand and price start going up.

RUMOR: Warner to Become Blu-ray Exclusive...

    http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=17975

^^^Crazy rumor. Exploding like wildfire over at Blu-ray.com. The claim here is that there will be an announcement tomorrow at 10:00 PST.

    Quote:

    Hello,

I'm happy to announce that tomorrow 10AM PST Warner will issue a press release announcing they are going Blu-ray exclusive. I know many of you will not believe me and think this is simply a joke (which I dont blame you for) but I ask you one thing :

-Wait till tomorrow and see what happens. If the announcement doesn't come through, you can blame me all you want and ban me from the site.

Again I'm going to expect alot of doubful comments (or maybe some not nice ones ) coming but I'm fine with it. I'm some one you guys already know (and perhaps you have read my posts before ).

As for those folks willing to have a bit more faith in me, let me give you some insights for tomorrow's announcement :

-Tomorrow Warner will announce going Blu-ray exclusive. However they will honor their commitment to HD DVD (unlike Paramount to Blu-ray) and release all the titles that were promised this year. Starting 2008, Warner will release only in Blu-ray Disc format.

-Waner will release all the previously exclusive HD DVD titles on Blu-ray by end of Q2 2008.

-The first Blu-ray live title (including PiP) from warner will release early 2008.

-As for their joint promotion with Toshiba regarding bundling 300 with 3rd generation Blu-ray players, the offer will expire December 2007.

-New Line will also go Blu-ray exclusive starting 2008 (Hairspray hint anyone?)

-One big catalogue title will be released exclusive on Blu-ray by Q2 2008. I believe Peter Jackson has something to do with that title

Tomorrow 10AM Pacific Time. For those of you who will think I'm not telling the truth or being stupid, I respect that opinion. But coming tomorrow when Warner announces exclusivity, all of you have to send me a Blu-ray movie as a bonus.

Unknown poster, so credibility is a BIG problem, but entertaining nonetheless. We'll find out in a few hours...

I did NOT know that the player upscales regular dvds to HD. Wow, that's cool. I may just get that baby when my current tv goes and I buy a Hi Def tv. How good does this look? I bet close enough to make you happy and not wanting to go and purchase your old dvds a second time. Hope so anyway.

Also, (a bit offtopic but I can't resist)...CONGRATS on the Xbox360!! You will become a gamer in no time now! Remember to use your free month of Xbox Live to play demos of games and to try 'em out. I was playing Halo 3 on a huge HD tv last night at a friend's house. Very sweet. Although Gears Of War is still the king of best looking graphics. (It's not the game for you if you don't like graphic violence and blood though. Why they rated Halo3 mature I will never understand but Gears definitely deserved the rating so watch for that if you have younger kids.) Check out the Bioshock demo as well. It's an FPS game for grownups. Ethical choices are part of the game.

Haven't seen it yet, but like you said hopefully the upscaling is good enough to deter repurchasing your DVDs in HD

lol, Thanks! I've actually had the xBox 360 for well over a year now, it's the HD DVD add-on and the new Samsung LCD display that's going to be new (if and when they arrive). That said, I really don't get to play it nearly as often as I'd like. For that reason, I only pick up a few games a year. Definitely own and love Gears of War. After I get all settled in the new home next month, I'll pick up Halo 3 as well (just have no time to play it until then). I want to try Bioshock also, as it got great reviews. All these great toys, and no time to play with them

Grrrr.. if people want those games, get them for pc. Grrr microsoft. To make this truly on topic, with microsoft siding with hddvd, do you think apple would go bluray exclusive?
