Wow, this doesn't even go into the PS3 effect and with 2nd generation, cheaper Blu-ray players on the horizon, with even more capability, and with even more content to be had, yet again, it seems the HD DVD supporting talking points are dissapearing.

Keep in mind too, that Sony's, Panasonic's, Pioneer's, and Philips players came after October. We very well may see the standalone players from Blu-ray dwarf HD DVDs as well sometime this year.

There's something unhealthy about being so passionate and aggressive about a piece of home entertainment equipment that you don't even own.

So what did you HD-DVD guys think of the Superbowl commercial last night?

I was quite suprised that they got a spot and wish that Sony had fought for one but after seeing the commercial and everyone in the room's reaction I couldn't help but laugh. This was one of the worst ads of the night and seemed like a huge waste of money to me considering it was in HD and more people than anytime in the year we're probably watching on an HDTV.

If you want to see it Toshiba has it at their site. Just scroll down on the right side of the page

Mmm...that was lame. But I kinda doubt Sony would have done any better...

I have to agree that it was a lame commercial. Actually, it's basically one and only version, the newer version just shows 2nd gen instead of the 1st gen unit on the last flash shot. Atleast, Toshiba's trying and that's all is to it. I'm hoping Toshiba will keep reaching out to the public this year. They owned most of the enthusiast market last year, and maybe the next victim is the pro-sumers or internet self-educators like most of the ones peeking on this thread. Still the HD-DVD player price is cheaper.... $375 shipped for 2nd gen. It's not at the $299 range, yet, but still alot closer than the other guy.

I thought the commercial was pretty stupid. Not a shining moment for HD content for either platform.

I definitely saw worse than this commercial during the Super Bowl. The whole night was filled with horrible commercials. Only commercial I thought was funny was the doritos commercial with the cashier passing out from the sexual comments.

Here's an interesting angle. Don't know if this has been discussed here before:

May 02, 2006 (Computerworld) -- Just as in the 1980s, when the Betamax and VHS video formats were battling it out for supremacy, the pornography industry will likely play a major role in determining which of the two blue-laser DVD formats -- Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD -- will be the winner in the battle to replace DVDs for high-definition content.

Ron Wagner, director of IT operations at E! Entertainment Television Inc. in Los Angeles, said his company has already chosen the Blu-ray Disc format, in large part because of talk in the porn industry favoring it over rival HD-DVD.

Wagner said that while attending last year’s National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) annual conference in Las Vegas, more than one panel discussed “several major players in the porn industry going the Blu-ray route.” He said the rivalry between Blu-ray and HD-DVD was also the buzz around NAB 2006 last month.

Blu-ray disks outsold HD-DVD disks 2-1 in Janruary, and 80% of PS3 owners plan on buying Blu-ray disks.

I figured it would be, so I didn't watch. I did re-watch one of the greatest commercials of all time, though -- the 2004 iPod-added version of the classic 1984 Macintosh commercial. Anya Major was hot! Of course, she's probably a grandmother by now. Sure makes one feel old to realize that there are college grads today who never saw that commercial, at least on TV.

Yes, its been discussed. It's not 1980 and the terrain seems to have changed a bit in terms of "content" delivery. Wagner's thinking IMHO is like generals planning to fight the last war. Then again optical discs are so 1990s anyway but I digress...

Really? I thought that was one of the lamer commercials.

I like the snickers add where the two guys are both eating the same snickers bar and wind up in a lip lock.

I thought that was one of the worst of the evening, personally.

Bud Light was reliable, per usual, but the only other ones I can remember really enjoying are the CareerBuilder.com ads and maybe that Snickers commercial.

Despite the commericial quality, it has people talking about HD-DVD. Well, money spent by Toshiba to get a slot in SuperBowl wasn't a total waste afterall.

Actually I think people are talking more about superbowl commercials not HD-DVD. The only reason people are talking about HD-DVD here is that is what the thread is about, and this thread has been here longer than the commercial so I give the commercia 0% credit for the discussion.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Better on PS3?

    http://ps3.ign.com/articles/762/762108p1.html

    Quote:

The PS3 version of Oblivion isn't a simple port of the game either, although players who have picked up the 360 version will be very familiar with the control scheme. For one thing, the PS3 version has been optimized to take advantage of the Cell processor and hardware that the system offers. As a result, the game runs a lot faster than the 360 build. Entering dungeons or buildings results in a load of 3-5 seconds, compared to the 7-10 seconds or longer for the 360 version of the game. Similarly, the amount of framerate drops or hitches that cropped up in the wilderness as you accessed a new area on the 360 have been substantially reduced on the PS3 version...

The visual presentation of Oblivion has also been significantly enhanced. While it was a beautiful title on the 360, far off environmental details often displayed low resolution textures. This has been fixed with new shaders dedicated to rendering the foreground cleanly with sharper details, so rocky landscapes now have craggy appearances instead of smooth, non-distinct surfaces. While there is still a fair amount of pop-in that occurs (which can't be helped due to the size of the world), the draw distance is farther than the 360 version. As a result, screens from the PS3 version should approach those from high end PCs running Oblivion, which is an impressive feat...

That's what you get when you optimize. I hope more games start taking advantage of the PS3's superior graphics capabilities as well as the Cell processor.

you cant be serious. this is what you post? honestly? it fixed a few graphic hiccups and has a few second faster load times after an entire year of extra development on hardware that is SUPPOSED to be light years ahead of the 360 (according to sony) ???

this after all the other games that looked worse??? you really cant be serious can you?

not to mention this isn't even a jump like the xbox version of grand theft auto was compared to the ps2 version when it was released almost a year later.

man, its a desperate time for sony fanboys

    What games looked worse?

Hopefully, you're not referring to the Gamespot 360 vs PS3 comparison that mistook severe bugs in the 360's handling of HDR as somehow better than the PS3 version.

How is pointing out that a game looks better on the PS3 "desperate"? Or fanboy-ish?
