So your giving it a good recommendation huh? I have been eyeing it up but wasn't sure about it. Guess That will be my next purchase. The trailer I saw looked amazing.
Sadly my access to HD was via my former roomates 30" Philips CRT and I know exactly of the smearing that you speak of. Fades and some fast pans would smear or pixelate on our comcast connection.
I'm vacillating between picking up a 32 or 37" LCD HDTV and I will mate a HD-A2 to it. Progressive is a good choice because sadly many HDTV manufacturers cut corners on their de-interlacing.
If I had a Sony SXRD, Panny or Samsung I HDTV I wouldn't worry so much.
Murch, one reoccurring theme on AVS is when it comes to flat screens "I wish I would have bought a larger one". Unless you're in a very small room, even 37" is going to seem exrtremely small after you've watched it for several days.

I'll second this. My 60" seemed absolutely massive when we first brought it down, but now...it's normal. It's kind of disconcerting. I find myself wishing it was 100".
It is hard to say, i think Apple has its sights on blu ray, but with digg busting out the fevor and letting people post the hd dvd code, that might be the breaker.
Either would be nice, but personally i don't think i'll need that on my next laptop except for storage.

Of the week ending 4/29, Blu-ray captured 71% of the market as compared to HD DVDs 29%.
Year to date, Blu-ray has captured 68% of the market while HD DVD managed 32%.
Since inception, and remember, HD DVD had a head start, Blu-ray has captured 58% of the market with HD DVD trying to hang on with 42%.
Rest assured, I see the chasm growing even more substantially than it already is with POTC 1 & 2, Cars, and all 3 Spidey coming out within the year. I really just don't see how HD DVD will be able to fight the fight much longer as they will continue to bleed money as long as the industry retains its resolve in support of Blu-ray.

Yes ..those with myopic vision "don't see" a lot of things.
So, I'm wondering why this thread has gone so quiet?
Given the highy differing views expressed, I was assuming the thread would rattle on well into the year
Has anyone any comments to make on the whole HD-DVD AACS copy protection/Digg thing?
I can see dual-format studios considering going blu out of fear due to this. Of course, Blu will be cracked soon enough, but CEOs can be remarkably short-sighted sometimes.

I thought both formats had been "cracked" although, from my understanding its hardly cracked wide open, its only on a per disc basis with HD-DVD.
I've actually heard very little about Blu-ray being cracked, a dim memory somewhere says it has been but perhaps I'm wrong?
as to comments above about myopic views, I'm reminded of the 3 monkeys "Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil" which if you follow it leaves you in a very dull world

I believe the AACS portion of HD DVD (and possibly Blu-ray) has been cracked due to a posting of its processing key,...not one of it's title keys, which means that all HD DVDs can now be potentially cracked.
Now, BD+, an added security measure to find its way in future BD releases adds the capability of disabling or making a particular individual disc unplayable on a disc by disc basis once security has been breeched is my understanding. We'll see though.
Marzetta - I'm about to enter the Blu-ray market. What model do you have?
I'm not Marz but I thought I'd add my 2¢. Right now the Blu-ray player of choice is the PS3. There are some second generation B-r stand-alone players due later this year that will be priced closer to the PS3 than the present ones are. A great place for information is the Blu-ray board on avsforum.
Marzetta - I'm about to enter the Blu-ray market. What model do you have?
I think Marzetta is still waiting for J6P compatible Blu-ray player. However, if you're serious about getting a standalone BD player unit, the second gen samsung bd-P1200 maybe be the best valued solution right now. The unit would champion upconverting SD-DVD as well as BD movies. Since PS3 is one of worst DVD player known to men, you should avoid it at all cost if you have a decent SD-DVD library, or just buy a good SD-DVD player along with PS3. The only concern would be the new "to be announced" BDJ-1.1 compatibility, but this is only an issue if you're going to use the in movie interactive features included in most BD movie releases in the future. If you can wait little longer from jumping into BD market, then wait until end of 2007 for BDJ-1.1/2.0 compatible 2nd/3rd gen BD units.
But the best solution is to get a unit now and then get another fully compatible player when available. I'm sure UK ebay would take your old bd player at a small loss.
The most used solution right now is quite likely the PS3. They maintain a good performance, have the hardware specs to already support upgraded BD-J and are easily firmware upgradeable. Until stand alone players settle down that'd be my choice, in fact it was my choice Now if only they'd hurry up and upgrade the firmware for upconverting. It'll probably happen around October with Home.
Well this certainly creates an option for Apple to go high-def with the Mac Pro.
At $299. retail, one would have to think the wholesale cost would be around $150-175. at most.
That's definitely Mac Pro territory.
HD-DVD hasn't managed to get a solution out in front of this one at retail (that I know of), which could be the deciding factor in this war. Either way, the OS may not go Blu-Ray till October anyway, so maybe it's not the decider.
Having this war go on and on is lowering prices much faster than either platform would likely have done on their own, so a few months more isn't bad for us!

That's true, this format war is lowering prices faster for sure. Who would've thought
bd drive price would come down to $299 level, even it's not available right now. Atleast, HD-DVD drive have had already been available below $199, if external solution is okay. Either way, at current prices of PS3, PS3 being the cheapest BD player, one can pick up a dual core 15.4" dell laptop with nvidia 7300go even at $599. Even with HiDef format players and parts coming down in prices, it will take BD awhile to make $299 standalone BD player. However, HD-DVD is already there with their HD-A2 rght now.
The news is not looking good for HD DVD. Nielsen Videoscan says for the week ending 4/29, Blu-ray captured 71% of the market. eProductwars shows HD DVD's top ten ranking has had an almost linear trend downward since the big buy last month while Blu-ray has stayed more or less level. I imagine that despite whatever financial incentive Toshiba has given them to stay exclusive, Universal can't be happy about locking their company out of up to 3/4 of the HD market.
As for the porn aspect, Home Media Magazine reports another studio about to put out HD DVD discs... at $50 SRP. HD porn obviously won't matter at these prices. Who'd pay $50 a disc when they can get "good enough" SD porn for free online?
Marzetta - I'm about to enter the Blu-ray market. What model do you have?
I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. Currently I don't have a Blu-ray player but have family and friends that own the PS3. Personally, I'm holding out for the 2nd gen PS3 that is rumored to have the Cell created on a smaller fab process and a larger hard drive. I rarely buy things in their 1st generation, so come Christmas, my 4 kids will hopefully have their PS3 goodness with daddio enjoying the HD goodness to boot.
In any case, I think your best bet currently is to get a PS3 (has HDMI 1.3, supports numerous audio formats, etc.) It has gotten rave reviews from Sound & Vision and numerous other respected sites. Bitemymac also had a very good suggestion in the 2nd gen Samsung BDP-1200 as it will MSRP for $799 but most likely you'll be able to get it for like $699 off of Amazon or something (has HDMI 1.3). Rememer too, that Sony will be releasing their 2nd generation standalone player as well around June I believe that will MSRP for $599--so you may get this one for around $499 on Amazon soon.
Anyhow, with whatever route you go, I think one major aspect you need to concern yourself with is content. And I think you are making the right (and safe) decision in entering the Blu-ray market as it has support of 7 of the 8 Hollywood studios, and is supported with the majority of CE manufacturers as well. Good luck in your future purchase!
