Next thing you know, we'll be able to choose from a gallery of our own faces, instead of using emoticons. Now won't that be fun?

Add me to the chorus that hates the brushed metal look. Yech!!

I don't get it... I think the whole brushed metal look is awesome! Though I don't care much for the iChat text "bubbles".

On another note, I still can't believe you need a AGP 2x for Quartz Extreme...!!

Apple likely bought Watson. The two companies were getting very close and the sherlock is almost identical. I'm quite sure Apple bought watson

    iChat.....

here's my take on it. The faces are tantamount to the AIM feature of Buddy Icons.

I am almost certain that a less obtrusive option will be available- more along the lines of a normal AIM style interface with the name: message convention. The bubbles will most certainly be able to be turned off.

What's good about iChat: full feature set of AIM, or so it appears. I'm also going to guess that, if iChat sucks, the third parties (Adium et al) will be able to get onto the iChat servers with little difficulty.

Or so I hope. I would really hate to see Apple release such an interface disaster as that iChat that we're seeing now.

EDIT: see the rightmost button between the text entry box and the message field? Sure as hell looks like a toggle the balloon thing on and off switch to me.

Well done Apple, talk about hitting us with everything you've got... On the other hand WTF is going on with all this brushed aluminium stuff? I never liked it much to begin with but this is getting ridiculous!

The dialog idea for iChat isn't a bad one, just implemented in a cheesy way. Seems like it would fall apart with more than 2 people chatting. Yes, that little right-hand button does look like it turns off the dialog bubbles. The buddy icons are fine. The talk bubbles are unnecessary if the text is aligned well enough to the icons. Keep Aqua Clean -- the new battlecry.

IMO the brushed metal looks fine in limited areas. Thyings like the iTunes equalizers are perhaps a bit much. But I don't think the brushed metal looks so dark on my screen at home. I can understand why iChat and Sherlock have the look as more iApps (hey I almost guessed it ) but the address book seems like it should be a standard Aqua utlity window or something.

    More iChat tidbits:

It appears that your online buddies appear in the iChat Menu Extra. A conventional buddy list window is available as well.

full support of AIM feature set, direct connect, etcetera.

Also optional is encrypted iChat with other iChat users.

    Full AddressBook/Mail/iChat integration.

Mail now uses fuzzy logic spam filtering and has an advanced spam-detection algorithm...

    Wow.

    Ahhh Inkwell.

It's all going according to plan now. Yes. All according to plan. Excellent. I will be at MWNY for the unveiling as well.

Say what you like about Apple, but they do write some great copy

Actually, at least a part of it (ZeroConf) is already supported by Windows XP, so chances are good it in fact will become sort of an industry standard.

To be fair, Sherlock {Watson} will not be open all the time, and frankly, neither will iChat if it only supports mac.com and AIM.

Wats...sorry, Sherlock does look crap with all brushed aluminium. Perhaps it is just that view currently on the site, or it could just look shit.

I am excited about Jaguar. Looks like some good stuff. A few thoughts: while I like the brushed metal look, I thought it worked well keeping it to media apps, iTunes, QuickTime player, now they've stuck it into other areas as well (though I guess even before it was a little inconsistent as iMovie doesn't have that look) but whatever. iChat, cool idea, I hate AOL's AIM client. I kind of feel bad for Adam Iser and anyone like him though. Adium is a great app. I suppose it will still be an option though, and who knows, we'll see how it compares when iChat comes out. Question though, until now (and still not yet really) AOL and mac.com have had no affiliation. Therefore, I can register the same name for iTools and for AIM. Apparently, your iTools name will work as an AIM SN. what happens if there are duplicate names? (ie someone is Bob42 on AIM, and someone else has registered Bob42 at Mac.com? I'm sure they've dealt with this, I just wonder how.

Nice thing about brushed metal windows is that you can click and drag them from almost anywhere. That's a great feature and it should be used on any window with lots of unused space (as it appears to be).

IMO the brushed metal look rocks. It's dead cool and it adds functionality to the window. How else is Apple supposed to indicate that vast swaths of window space are dragable? Aqua windows aren't gonna cut it.

There is already an ichat program and website. Does Apple know about this?

shhhh, dont say that. act stingy so the apple spies on this board can suggest a low or nonexistant upgrade fee!

    try saying:

"dammm peeps i aint givin you no bling-bling for this.....already spent all my mutha's welfare chekz on the imac supa-drive."

    ooooooooooooh iChat.....

there could be worse things than brushed metal. it's the "in" thing in kitchen appliances, so maybe the programmers used to work at the fridgidaire factory.

Good point. Since one would move the iChat and Sherlock windows a lot, being able to drag them around from any part of the window is handier, if not more convenient, than going up to the title bar.

All in all, Mac OS 10.2 looks awesome!
