No problems at all via Software Updater, and definitely snappier, especially web browsing with IE

Remember, folks, whenever you read a description involving the term "Snappier", take it with a grain of salt. For most people, it's a placebo effect and it no more quantitative than saying, "Gosh, the grass sure is greener today!"

Of course, I'd guess that for people with Rage PRo graphics chips that finally got acceleration, it actually could be... err... snappier.

For PowerBook owners, there (finally) is an option to reduce processor performance in the Energy Saver preferences, under Options.

    Cool.

I've also run Disk Warrior. Still, I panic randomly upon startup. I've got Norton 7.0 here, but all my past experiences have been that Norton *causes* more trouble than he fixes. I may run it anyway.

    About the "judicious unplugging" -- that's my next step. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

I have a lombard powerbook and I installed the 10.1.5 update, but my quicktime movies still lose the same number of frames as before. Has anyone else experienced this?

Updated and running with no untoward drama. Also installed the QT 6 update while I was at it.

Well, I just got back from running Norton. He claimed to find "major" damage and repair it -- funny how he always finds something wrong after all the other utilities have fixed the disk. I lot of help that did, though, as I got two more kernel panics before I could properly boot up.

There are reports of something called power delete that KPs the system at the progress bar. I don't have that, plus I don't get as far as the progress bar. My Mac KPs literally within a second after the spinning disc cursor appears at the top left of the Happy Mac screen. I've done some searching and it would appear that I' mnot the only one with this problem.

Well, I'm off to start unplugging some shit to see it I can circumvent the panic. FYI, the backtrace has no mention of any specific hardware or drivers -- just memory addresses.

Starfleet: I have the ultimate solution for you:

    1. Uninstall Norton

    2. Run Drive X Diagnostics - repair where needed

    3. Throw Norton box / CD into your trash basket

    4. Wait for Micromat to release the next update (not upgrade) for Drive 10, which will include a native disk defragmentor.

    5. Thank me later.

I paid for Drive 10. I wish I hadn't bothered. It doesn't do much at all.

I suspect StarfleetX's problem is uncommon and a result of lots tinkering with his install...I used to get all sorts of weird problems before I decided to leave certain things alone, not matter how much I wanted to change them or update them.

For example, I'm sick of these 10.1.x updates downgrading my installs of Apache and OpenSSH. I just bumped OpenSSH back up to 3.2.2p1, but have decided to leave Apache at 1.3.23 instead of 1.3.24.

And don't create a folder called CoreServices in /Library...

I haven't noticed any instant improvements, but the install worked fine.

Starfleet, I have seen at least two other users with Kernell panics occurring at different times... both were on Dual G4 450s (same line as yours) I have one myself and am waiting to update because of what you have all told me about the KPs. Interesting that it seems to only affect that particular line of PMs.

AirSluf, you say that you've got a PM from the same line (DP 450/500 aka GigE release)?? Please tell... it would be the first one that I've heard of working correctly from that release.

I can't for the life of me prove it, and it could probably be aliens effecting my brain over night, but the Finder got more AA on its fonts or some such differences. MY eyes are ajusted now so it looks the same, but on the momment of that reboot, My desktop looked a lot more "smoother" I remembered seeing a big difference since my desktop was a mess, which it still is.

On another note, carbon apps can use quartz to more degrees now, as stated in Office X10.10. Now it looks nice and smooth with all the other cocca apps.

OmniWeb seems to be scrolling much faster now.

I do not see any new options under Energy Saver though. I am on a pismo.

I think apple might be using an improved anti-aliasing algorithm now. Things seem somewhat smoother now than they were before, and I'd imagine it was also optimized when they re-did it, *if* they really did and I'm not just making wild guesses.

No problems installing this on a Pismo 500. iDisk mounts much faster and is on the verge of becoming snappy. Actually seems usable now. Kudo's to the engineers at Apple.
