I walked past the kiosk on my way into the apple store in B'ham and did a double take; you have to feel sorry for the poor gals working the kiosk--they were clueless little bunnies-- wearing the same orange-colours as the managers in the adjacent Apple store-- being ragged on by half a dozen apple fanboys
NOW is the time to be gracious to the soon-to-be vanquished Goliath; just like Tcheky Karyo in Kiss of the Dragon, Microsoft is still standing courtesy of the second law of thermodynamics, but once the energy in the system dissipates....
You buy the combination of hardware and software, thats the deal with Mac, so surely dual-booting is in itself an admission of the shortcomings of the overall package?
I don't understand why Microsoft is spending any money on advertising at all. This kind of advertising usually has growing the market as it's objective as is evidenced by the Apple ads this campaign is copying and replying to.
Microsoft has a "captured" market, that's the whole point of it's monopoly position. They sell to businesses primarily, not consumers, that's their core competency and their core market.
If they simply spent the money on making a kick-ass product, the consumers will come back in the same way that they drifted over to Apple in the first place because of *Apple's* kick-ass products.
Seems to me that five years ago, if Gates had told his developers, developers, developers to just make a version of XP with unix quality file security that would have given everyone confidence that Windows was going in the right direction. That feature alone would have sold the OS and it would be easy to make an integrated marketing strategy based on 'bye bye viruses and spam'.
spot on, that roflmao!! Now Apple needs to setup a video playing their ads right at the front of the store. Then when the pizza ad comes on the sales folks can say, "see this ad here?" *point to booth* "exactly what this ad is talking about. You need to get a Mac & break away from the propaganda."
Even Ballmer at his most rabid doesn't believe this will slow switchers, and comments above suggest the staff are just bunnies, so there's no real persuasion going on. ( and let's not go there, even that wouldn't work ).
I can only think of two ideas:
(a) Ballmer wants to collect videos from Mac fans for some insidious use later on.
(b) This is an incompetent attempt at viral PR. I say incompetent because a big photo of a gleaming Apple Store is everything Microsoft should be stopping their users from seeing.
So what's the hidden agenda? Hilarious as it is - this is fishy.
I'd be pissed at the Mall Administration/landlord if I were Apple. They pay big bucks and are responsible for bringing in a lot of traffic to the mall..and they rent out the space practically
blocking their front door to their competitor? I'd be pissed and threaten to move out of the mall...even though it cost them money.
Actually that is a good point. Apple wouldn't likely move over this decision, but I suspect Apple would be right in demanding the Kiosks be parked somewhere other then in front of it's stores.

Apple is shown to be having the affect of the large anchor stores, and certainly could sway some malls to prevent that, but unless their contract does state that certain types of competition can't be within x of the store then they have no legal recourse. I figure they have something written in there about Dell kiosks, as I have never seen a Dell kiosk anywhere near an Apple Store entrance.
Comments
PC Booth and while displaying my new laptop to the camera, left a message explaining,
" I LOVE MY MAC and I use to be a PC in the 90's"
Ironically, the poster on the booth reads "Life without walls"... on the outside of a wall.
Even more ironically, the Apple store has no walls in them and is fronted by glass so it appears to have no front walls either.
Personally, I love the juxtaposition of the minimalistic elegance of the Apple store next to the over-designed, cluttered kiosk. How perfect is that?

Stinky leadership at Microsoft.
Also, hate to nitpick, but the shopping centre is "The Bull Ring", not "Bullring".
Not according to the Bullring official web-site, where they refer to it everywhere as "Bullring"
http://www.bullring.co.uk/
So, has anyone been down there today yet?
Touche! Or should I say Windows Surface?
Windows Superficial.
It's all in the UI, but it still gets viruses.
