Just got mail from Apple Japan... the 3GS goes on sale here on June 26 and current 3G users can upgrade. Awesome. Tethering! Video!

Didn't see costs, so will ask tomorrow at a shop.

    Merry Christmas!

Edit: cost is 2000 yen or about 20 bucks!

The only real news are the compass, the 3mp autofocus camera and maybe 256mb of ram. The rest are software Limitations. Let hackers work...

Apple are a business not a charity - grow up!

Apple have continued to provide new features to owners of iPhones and are doing it yet again with 3.0 - all for FREE.

When you bought the iPhone you knew what it could do and not do.

It's not so simple. Apple doesn't update the Touch the same time they do a major update on the phone. iPhone 1- no touch, Touch introduced three months later. iPhone 2, no Touch update, updated three months later. iPhone 3: no Touch. Can you see the pattern here? What should you expect to see three months from now?

If the Apple haters can't pick up on a pattern like that, then you're just going to be angry, making up half baked conspiracy theories and being angry for months at a time.

As for the video, we'll see if it's just software that was holding Apple back. It seems to me that they probably have a hardware video compressor and maybe a camera that can take photos faster than 15 times a second. The current/previous iPhone can record video, but it is pretty nasty. Hopefully the next one takes video that's tolerable. It seems like they should allow video on the old models, as long as there is a disclaimer about battery life. But I don't know if video is a compelling enough feature to make it worth the upgrade.

Please stop doing the all caps lines too.

Gee I wonder if maybe Apple could have two teams working on the task at the same time?

After all, a new OS is a big job! Apple probably needs 1-2 years to do it after they stop updating Leopard. Once that get that final Leopard update out the door in a few weeks, I hope they take those programmers and get them started working on Snow Leopard.

Trivial questions that you?ve appended conspiracy answers too. Have you asked yourself why Apple would even bother with supplying all iPhone with any updates, muchless free ones if their goal was simply to sell more iPhone? Have you asked yourself why the video in old iPhone is very poor while the 3G[s] can do VGA@30fps? Have you asked yourself why Apple has incremented the clock speed when it was acheivebal;e while maintaining battery life?

Oh wait.... after that doesn't work, you might call ATT.

Strange, I got mine on launch day and I'm eligible for the discounted price. I'd just wait until the 19th and go to an AT&T store (not Apple). At the AT&T store you can haggle with the manager and say look, it expires in a month, I can either come back in a month or you can sell me the phone now - the data package is $10 more a month and you didn't subsidize this phone in the first place. Chances are the manager (eager to meet sales figures) will give you the discount. If you check out AT&T's page it always has the little bit about how eligibility may vary by location (i.e. a manager can hook you up if you're on the fence).

If they do anything I'll bet a price drop ($79, $169, $249) for the Holiday season. If we've learned anything from the past it's that Apple isn't very likely to dish out a new iPhone twice a year but they are likely to change prices between releases.

Also, a quick FYI - the 3G doesn't support Voice Control as per apple's site...

    Anybody else notice this?

    "Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating"

Looks like we're getting a new coating on the 3Gs - hopefully it does what it's supposed to do...

I installed it and checked. Perhaps it like the headphone controls where a different physical Home Button chip is required. Personally I would have preferred the voice controls on the side of the device as the Home Button is a bit awkward while in my hands or in my pocket, but you take what you can get.

+1 - Generally when holding my phone my fingers are on the side, not the bottom so a voice control button on the side where my fingers naturally reside would be better but, ya know, at least we got something out of it and it should make driving + iPhoning much, much safer (now if I only I could have texts read to me and be able to dictate them back!)

EDIT: Did you try using the center button on the headphones? Maybe you just need the new headphones?

How about a new (say... matte finish) case to inspire new buyers?

Are they worth it? I was thinking about them when they came out and saw they didn't really work with my 2G iPhone and said heck w/ it...

I've read through, and I think pretty much all good points have been made, and all bad points that I could imagine, and even I couldn't have been made.

I like it when people are realistic. I think we can all agree that while this new version isn't a GIANT LEAP, it is a pretty good jump lol. The phone doesn't suck by any means, but it also isn't the most amazing thing ever either.

Out of all of this, the 99$ 3G is the best news. The video recording with editing is also the other thing that stands out.

Anyone who says the 3GS is no good is retarded. Anyone who says the 3GS is the most revolutionary thing ever is retarded. The 3GS is a good step in the right direction, period.

    my 2 cents

Well the 3Gs is enough to get me to upgrade from my 2G (like what they say on cnet). If you don't have an iPhone or you have a 2G it's a worthwhile upgrade - if you have a 3G it probably isn't until the price comes down but, at least for me personally, I'm planning on sticking to the 2 year refresh rate just as I did with my old cell phone.

There has to be a hardware change. Apple stated they added opel gl /es 2.0 support . So you would need new video processing support for that.

So I am guessing that the hardware in the iphone 3gs was changed but they are waiting till they can refresh the ipod touch to announce the changes.

They aren?t. Apple rarely talks up the technical aspects unless they are marketing-capable among the masses. We didn?t know much about the first two iPhones until they were dissected by iFixit et al. We will know well before the next iPod Touch update in September and they surely won?t be stating the CPU and GPU specs at that time.
