Interesting story to be telling to the parents of new college students. Do they turn and run? Maybe you should tell it to a professional? Kinda out of place here, don't you think?

Why do you say that? A lot of new phones are getting OLED screens. There is no reason why the new iPhone should not have one.

    The screen is number 1.

If we don't get OLED, it's not where Apple wants it to be yet. Apple innovates in software, and waits for very stable, cost-effective hardware to put it on. You'd be pissed if your iPhone's gorgeous, efficient OLED display didn't work in six months.

Tethering works well on 3.0. So far it?s still free, but I doubt that will last. Even if it?s an additional $30/month to match their 3G PC card rates it?ll still save me $30/month. The only caveat is that when using fast 3G, like 3mbps, and when downloading a large file my iPhone battery has drained. This is tethering by USB.

I think that the next capacity should be enough but 8GB was more than enough then 16GB was more than enough, yet after a very short time I was running out of space. I figure 32GB will get filled up rather quickly, too.

I have no idea what part of embargo or ban or restriction or requirement that you are having a problem with. It?s a term that was used, nothing more. Apple did this with the iPhone 3G and Palm is doing it with the Pre.

Maybe, but I think it's useful. It's not supposed to scare anyone and I don't mean to derail the thread, so please don't take it there. I just think that college is a rather daunting thing in the beginning, and it's important that parents reward and encourage their kids.

Accessory navicular. Your navicular is the little bump on the inside of your foot (lower and in front of your malleolus, the big bump on your ankle). My lower bump is bigger than most people's, and it turns out that there's an extra bone on top of the navicular for me, which can lead to all sorts of fun things if you run enough.

And soldiers run enough, so I got the boot.

My dad's a physician, and I had a $150k bankroll lovingly squirreled away for my postsecondary education. My parents, less than confident in my discipline (not a problem you and your daughter seem to have), restricted my choices to four small, local, christian liberal arts colleges. They forbid me to work, would not allow me to bring my car (a near must-have in the suburban US), put me on meal plan, and gave me $25 a week for "entertainment." Because I wasn't allowed to work, I knew of nobody at my school with a tighter cash-flow situation than mine. My mom caught me smoking that Thanksgiving weekend and turned off my cellphone. More "broke" feeling than I'd ever been, I began to manufacture fake IDs with the guy in the next dormroom and resold alcohol to other minors for cash. Two semesters of private-school tuition later, I dropped out and joined the Army, so I could have money AVAILABLE to be comfortable during school. After getting discharged for an extra bone I didn't know I had, I worked in sales for a few years, until my parents decided to make my college fund available to me, with no strings.

I'm now twenty-six years old, supporting a wife and two sons doing only short-term contract work. I'm debt-free, and one semester away from a bachelor's degree in accounting from a private school. I've been accepted to law school, and I think I'm going to go. Without the unnecessary parental restriction on my finances, I feel I could have a CPA or JD by now, and I could be close to both. Right now, I'm doing everything my parents always wanted me to do. My parents had the right intentions, but the wrong application. Proper capitalization makes everything more successful.

I'm sure your daughter would be successful off-the-bat either way, and I'm sure she won't be skipping class to laminate fake IDs with an iron and the side of her computer case. Even so, it's important to reward your kids, even in anticipation of their success, to the extent that they feel like you're really in their corner. If you can afford to get her a 32GB iPhone, and you think it'd remind her on a daily basis how supportive you are of her, I think you're totally justified in doing so.

Get the black one, though. Dyed plastic is much more durable than bleached - hairline cracks, anyone?

    Thanks.

I included the entire post because I think it's important to show how difficult it can be for some. In the end, it's up to the person themselves to do what's right.

My daughter has a friend that ( I didn't know this until afterwards, when he told me) has a dad who's abusive. His mom is divorced, and isn't working. He was living with his dad, but then had to go to a shelter for a while, where his laptop was stolen with all his artwork on it (he's an art student in my daughter's high school). He's now late 19 and is graduating, and is going to CCNY. It took him an extra year in HS to get there.

That's tough! But this is a guy who'll make it.

    No you don't.

    Don't lie to us Ireland.

You didn't care about an OLED screen.

    You wanted a tablet iPhone.

What I need to buy a new handset from apple is:

-faster hardware - apps seem to stall and lag at times, faster would be better

-video video and video the iphone is a premium handset...for God sake, every $30 toss away phones can do video

-better camera - at least 3MP and some kind of auto focus.

-MORE POWER...how about a real smart phone that can get by for a week without a charge - hell, I would re up for 3 days without a recharge.

and ATT really needs to address their shitty 3g network: their network cant take traffic from people who USE THE DATA for more than just Blackberry push...my average bandwidth has gone from 1.3Mbps the day iphione 3g launched and nothing over 300k for the last 8 months...

    1) The iPhone does video playback, I don?t know of any $30 phone that can play 640x480 H.264 video or, as you are probably stating, that they all can record video from the camera.

    2) The HW is only variable. The other major variable is the OS. If you can?t see a difference between OS X and other mobile OSes I don?t know what to tell you, except to consider the resource usage.

    3) Apple doesn?t usually do technically possible features. You can get video recording on the iPhone if you jailbreak it but it?s crap. Apple waits and make a feature useful and simple. Apple isn?t making a phone for geeks, they are making a phone for the average consumer.

    4) The next iPhone will likely match the Pre in the CPU type and speed and RAM capacity. They may even under-clock the CPU again to save on power usage. The battery needs improvement, but all batteries need improvement. I can get several days out of my iPhone providing I am not using Safari, iPod, YouTube or any other app that pushes the device.

Do you mean 'Apple is taking over' or 'Apple has taken over'?

Because it's not clear unless you use this little thing called THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE when you're writing.

Maybe English is like his fourth language or something. Most of his posts are like that.

Thought you'd appreciate this: One of my friends describes herself as a "grammar natzi" on facebook.

    Oh, the irony!

Except I think 32G for 2009 is quite small Apple or not Apple. Besides consumer tech is 40 years behind DOD tech. This phone technically could've been built 40 years ago

I'd be inclined to agree regarding most material possessions, including gadgets. However, in this case...I kind of need an iPhone. My brain is a basketcase. I score off the charts on numerous validated ADD tests. (I have reviewed accepted journal articles on this topic, and have become familiar to the level of an M.D. with it). I think in addition to pharmaceuticals and behavior modification (ie keeping things in the same place, limiting distractions, making a schedule, etc.), I need the iPhone to constantly make reminders and schedules for myself. That is actually why I want it the most, believe it or not. A calendar, to do list, contacts, etc. I assume there is an app that lets people instantly record voice reminders and attach them to a calendar. Being a cool phone is nice. That and the GPS. It helps people organize.

Interestingly, though, the world is hurtling towards cyborg implant reality. Everyone has a Bluetooth receiver on their head now, just as Minority Report predicted. Connect that to an iPhone with VoiceOver...and that's spooky. I bet soon Google will be making applications where it almost understands you, and you don't have to ask it a query in specific syntax. In other words, once the iPhone hooks you up to the Google brain....that's it. You can just ask your iPhone a question, and it has all the power of Google, as well as OS X. I can see other websites obviously jumping on board to this idea of cell phone use such as Wolfram Alpha, etc. It has to be only a few years away, obviously with more of the engineering on Google's side. But once that happens, holy crap. Do people suddenly get dumber and stop learning anything? That's what I've been wondering. What does everyone think? And then..a few more years, when it's a teeny implant on your head or something and it has a camera, it can stream video to any server, and any program could see what you're seeing. So you could look at a building and ask who owns it or when it was built and BAM, you have your answer. Or it could display engineering schematics on a heads-up display or maybe straight to your head with the new patented Apple OpticPort, connected straight to the back of your eyesocket! Heck, researchers already have monkeys controlling robots with their mind, why not have the iPhone implant controlled by mind instead of voice, in a few decades?

I can't wait for a new iPhone and iPhone 3.0. But what I really can't wait for, is iPhone 13.0! Except, like I was saying, kinda scary in a way! OK sorry that was quite a ramble. My mind does that...

I was just thinking. Could the Apple logo (which is suppose to be lit) be used as the Flash for the camera?
