hehe, you pulled that post in time.  I was just about to reply with: now divide the overall per-OS web traffic by the number of phones out there running Android vs iOS and my point is still valid. :)

Yeah I realized you were referring to per-device usage.

Hard to say. One thing I think has happened is that dumbphone users really don't go with the two year upgrade cycle anymore. Granted, there's not really a reason for them to get a new dumbphone, as they've been selling the same dumbphones since 2011 or so. So you end up with a lot of dumbphones that are being used until they break.

Going to be interesting to see what happens as Verizon shuts off the CDMA network in a few years though. That should spur the final wave of upgrades.

As you are no doubt already aware, Apple does have a patent that protects their entire Apple Pay system.

Yeah, no one can do it exactly the same way (assuming the patents would be valid if challenged but that's another story altogether). That has nothing to do with having exclusive rights to a secure element. They don't.

ApplePay for all petrol stations please.

Might never happen until they ease up on cell phone use restriction at pumps.

Oh, do they have a timeline for that? What about Sprint? No CDMA means Apple could clean out the iPhone of unneeded antennae.

So we can expect Google to copy it and give it away for free in that case.

What needs to be in focus here is that the consumer has choice and protection. If NFC takes off for payment options and it's SECURE then that really should be all that matters. I hate walking into a store these days and wonder as I swipe my card if I'm going to run into issues 6 months down the road due to someone hacking Home Depot (or whoever). I'm not all that up on Google Wallet as I have an iPhone, but as long as their solution is safe and secure for me, then I hope it succeeds. There's more than enough room for both Apple and Google to provide their own solutions for their own ecosystems...

I kinda wish Apple had invented a proprietary standard for use of ?Pay besides NFC.
That way it'll lock out piggybackers and shut fandroids up who think Giggle Pay and ?Pay are the same thing.

That would've taken a multitude of willing partners. It was easier to find them using already in place technology.

Pretty much. I think if there were a larger number of dumbphones available for sale, rather than just a slightly enhanced version of the same four phones the carriers sold the year before, Android sales would be lower.

Smartphones killed dumbphones, so what makes you think the inverse would be true?

First thing first, as always ... F*** google, google wallet and their android!

That said, what in the world these cheap android users can afford to buy anyways?!! A pack of gum or candy?!! :smokey:

Just more evidence that Apple is pretty much the only tech company that can push and standardize a new standard to the mainstream. The same thing could be available tens years prior, but itf Apple isn't using it, adoption is usually shit. This is no doubt what annoys the Android neckbeards. BUT BUT WE HAD IT FIRST APPLE IS JUST PLAYING CATCH UP11!!!

Because a lot of those low end Android phones are not really "smart phones" but are feature phone replacements.

    Of course.

A lot of people probably don't care as long as it does texts, phone calls, camera, maybe browser and calendar.  Conceivably you could come out with new Android-less feature phones that are modern looking in design,  that do the above and sell a bunch to people "upgrading" when their contract is up.

Nothing surprising here. Same thing happened with PCs, touch phones, tablets, connected media devices, online music sales, app markets, connected ecosystems, etc. Apple's engagement in a technology sector always legitimizes it because they are a thought leader and trend setter with a pretty good track record to back it up. Not perfect but definitely ahead of companies that throw everything and its brother at the wall to see what will stick. We've seen the pattern time and again so why is contactless payment any different? Innovation is ALL about delivering consumable VALUE. It's not even about invention or first to market. Apple Pay closes the loop and delivers value better than any previous contactless payment system. So now even less compelling variations like Google's are able to benefit from the overall rising tide.

Honestly, I bet it’s increasing in use due to the media spreading knowledge of its existence wider thanks to the NFC ban at some stores. Thanks again, Apple, for making Android users aware that their phones can actually do something!

But Google Wallet works differently.  Right?

Yes, worse. A layman doesn’t have a clue about that, though.
