The perfect Apple TV has hardware + software polish.
But all the polish in the world won't make up for a lack of content.
Perhaps a super successful platform gives them negotiating power, but that's a future promise. Until they have the right content deal in place it's not in place. Much to be proven here. i hope to God they have an awesome TV in the lab ready to go for when this content play is up and running and it's for sale + for contract.
Paying $79 a month for TV service on a 3-year contract that includes a contract-to-buy Jony Ive designed television product should be Apple's ultimate goal. Then the subscription deal goes down to $39/month thereafter. And for the love of God please let the rights to such a deal be global. It's 2015 FFS.
When product becomes complex and expectations of users are sky high. Apple should offer decent and improve it fast as feedback start rolling in. One will always find a set of users with UN-resonable expectation but that can also be met with time and patience.
Let's hope, new Apple-TV starts laying down ground for mid tier game console, first tier set-top box streaming(TV,video, music), decent Homekit Hub, reasonable internet browsing(may be 802.11ac router), etc. I will buy for $249-$299 if all these can be in one device.
I agree with you. Yes, I too want to be a converging device. The 802.11ac router would be nice, but I think the close proximity of the TV make this a not good router. I also do hope that they keep the price in the original range < $100

Wow what a load of bull he speaks. We were promised hover boards 30 years ago and he reckons we'll have a pool of self-driving cars to hail in 18 months time. Lmfao
Considering there is an unprecedented number of companies entering this space, I'd say he's going to be right on the mark.
If he had said, "...in twenty years...", then it would be a far more suspect comment.

Unless some magical entity responsible for negotiating global rights appears, that'll never happen. Broadcast, streaming and content rights are all local and country-specific.
If it is as good as it sounds, it'll be slavishly and blatantly copied in no time, and soon afterwards, the meme will be "oh, Apple didn't create this, it was all obvious." Sigh.
And we know who they'll be in this Forum. No need to name names.

The A8's GPU is NOT equivalent to the PS3. That's the next generation of PowerVR graphics likely coming in the A9.
And there are more to games than graphics. The fantasy that an AppleTV will replace dedicated game consoles is sheer lunacy.
I think this will be aimed more at the casual gamers...just as the majority of the games on iOS are.
I'll be curious to see what type of game controllers (if any) are rolled out. This might dictate how much of a gaming platform Apple is positioning this new AppleTV.
I'm sure the sound is abysmal. Sound when it comes to video content is more important than picture quality—though picture is very important. It's the one area where student films falter the most: sound quality. Skinny TVs invariably mean pesky sound systems. And I'm of the thinking that you should not need to add on an additional product for the TV to be good. It should be good out of the box. The included soundbar in modern TVs should blow away TVs of old. They certainly do not.
But look at the bright side: you'll have heard nothing at all about it, and you can watch as though you're hearing it live!
And the potential to DL the 1080p version and watch it without first having to watch a lesser version the first time through. Plus, the day of generally results in a dozen articles just on AI and dozens of new posters signing up to say how much Apple sucks.
That doesn't always work. I've heard some judges will ask you if you're capable of rendering a fair judgment based on evidence presented (or something to that effect) and they'll not let you off the hook. In many places, they're having problems getting jurors and accept fewer excuses these days.
Another vaguely Apple-related thing has just been announced. An ex-Apple engineer has taken on the furniture industry to make couches that knock-down and set-up in minutes. Looks intriguing:
Apple will not replace console or PC gaming with this unit. However the masses will be more than satisfied with the graphics capability of an A8 chip. Apple has always known how to appease the masses and that is what they will do here.
We are all ready for a game changer.
Fixed it for you Dep't: "We are all ready for a 'game' changer."
It seems like they're all pushing sound to a separate unit, soundbars and the like. Makes sense if the goal is "thin", flat to the wall as possible.
They don't know how to design large scale viewing products. That's why they leave sound for someone else to solve. The TV product should include superb sound quality without adding on anything. That is not the case for any modern TV available today and I think it's a shame. That you cannot get superb sound quality out of the box is a shame, shame, shame.
People are going around thinking this is the way things are, but it doesn't have to be this way. It really seems like literally not one of the designers of these TVs actually watches content on them. It's like the Hollywood big shots—they don't even watch movies.

think they need to price it right.
would be hard for me to consider if it's more than $150.
just have too many streaming and gaming options already in the house.

Talking TV's for a moment have you looked at the new LG OLED HDTV's? The latest is advertised as thinner than a smartphone at under 5mm.

Just peel off the old set, roll it up and throw it away?
Sucks that I have jury duty on Sept 9th.
Seriously.

There's this old automotive joke from the 1940s-1950s.
Guy walks into an auto dealer and tells the salesman that he wants to buy a new car to impress his girlfriend:
Salesman: "Why not buy a Kaiser and surpriser her?"
Customer: Ehhh ...
Salesman: "Why not buy a Frazer and amaze her?"
Customer: Nah ... I think I'll buy a Tucker!
Gotta' go now, it's Gruen Time!
