They don't know how to design large scale viewing products. That's why they leave sound for someone else to solve. The TV product should include superb sound quality without adding on anything. That is not the case for any modern TV available today and I think it's a shame. That you cannot get superb sound quality out of the box is a shame, shame, shame.
I have never encountered a TV with superb sound quality, not even in the days when they had CRT sized cases to fit speakers to. You will only get superb quality audio via a separate sound system that costs a good fraction of the cost of the TV or even more.

Yes, but the built in speakers are becoming smaller and smaller and smaller. It's getting to a stage where you literally have to add on a soundbar. My point is the TV maker should build this into the product, because without it the product is unfinished.
Do I think all TVs sold now are unfinished products? Yes I do.
I've been holding off getting a new ATV box to replace my buggy, old one. I'm really looking forward to what Apple is going to offer. If even 1/2 of the rumors are correct, I'm looking forward to cutting the cable-cord and giving Comcast the middle-finger. I'm tired of paying $100+/mo on TV that I rarely watch, and only for a handful of channels.
That doesn't always work. I've heard some judges will ask you if you're capable of rendering a fair judgment based on evidence presented (or something to that effect) and they'll not let you off the hook. In many places, they're having problems getting jurors and accept fewer excuses these days.
Another vaguely Apple-related thing has just been announced. An ex-Apple engineer has taken on the furniture industry to make couches that knock-down and set-up in minutes. Looks intriguing:

I'd like them removed completely. The 21st century TV should be a monitor. Everything else is superfluous to its core purpose. If you want a great looking 4K UHD TV with some shitty speakers, go for it, if you want to also get one with built-in motion sensors, multiple mics, cameras, and other sensor, then get it, but the TV today should be start out as just a display. It's this 20th century thinking that has kept the HEC such an archaic mess for all these decades, and it's something I hope Apple can start to fix come Sept. 9th.
I think people are going to be disappointed by the price. Unless it's subsidised somehow.
I think you are right. The guts of an iPhone 6 less the battery, radio, cameras and screen. The BOM for the 6 is said to be $227. Take out those, bits leaves you with $166, add a power supply for $5 and then mark up by 40% gives you $240.
Mine has 3 tuners. Analogue, terrestrial digital and satellite. Cable from the dish plugs straight into the back and everything is all on the one remote. HD satellite channels look pretty good.
One thing that this article brings to mind (and I've said this before from time to time) is; I think the purchase of PA Semi is the greatest corporate purchase Apple ever made. Even better than SoundJam.

There's this old automotive joke from the 1940s-1950s.
Guy walks into an auto dealer and tells the salesman that he wants to buy a new car to impress his girlfriend:
Salesman: "Why not buy a Kaiser and surpriser her?"
Customer: Ehhh ...
Salesman: "Why not buy a Frazer and amaze her?"
Customer: Nah ... I think I'll buy a Tucker!
Gotta' go now, it's Gruen Time!
Ha! Never heard that one.
Anyone whos serious about sound does not use the TV speakers.
Quit blaming the user. A TV without good sound is an unfinished product.
Anyone who's serious about designing a TV solves the sound problem for the customer because it's their job.

Well, in all fairness, I could barf on the average smart TV screen. And that would "blow away" current, "junky" smart TV interfaces."

Just roll eyes and say whatever...

Afraid I disagree.
Once upon a time, TVs were "furniture".
I'm actually surprised that TVs today even come with a built-in tuner. (Who uses that?)

People who want uncompressed OTA quality.
> I hope it's 1/10th as good as it sounds.
Everything else Apple makes nowadays is, why not this?
That doesn't mean that OTA content can't be had if the TV doesn't have a tuner built-in.

Perhaps, but the tuner is required by US government mandates.
