...and Detroit. Iggy & the Stooges, MC5, Mitch Ryder, Bob Segar and Amboy Dukes...
I will add too that The Melvins lead singer was the one who took Kurt Kobain to his first punk rock show (Black Flag) and changed his life forever...or at least a couple of years...don't get me wrong, Nirvana has a place in rock history. It would be even more lasting if Kobain hadn't cut it off short. I wish people around him had listened and watched out for him...but he made his choice.
Kurt Cobain and Nirvana certainly do have a place in rock history, as one of the greatest bands ever. It is obvious to me that some of you dont know the circumstances surrounding Cobain's death. The suicide is still in question and has never been completely confirmed as a suicide. Too bad that he is dead, he was only 27. You Know You're Right was a signal of things to come, suicide may have been one of them (see All Apologies) but the sound in that song is somewhat of a departure from other stuff found on other albums. Slow, Fast, Slow, Fast will never be the same without Cobain. He is single handedly responsible for doing away with the "hair bands" at least.

oh god.... you have a problem with latching onto people...... and thinking too highly of them.... steve jobs...kurt cobain.... who else?
If yau ask me, You know you're Right is a pretty weak track. Even though I believe also that Courtney Love killed him, his heroin addiction was slowly killing him, and his music was clearly deteriorating, if you can even consider it "solid" in the first place.

I dont think his music was deteriorating at all, prior to YKYR the MTV Unplugged album showcased how good Nirvana was. The total departure from loud feedback driven songs to a more angsty soulful genre was evident there. Whatever some of you people say I know I am not alone when I declare Nirvana as one of the greatest ever.
When I heard High & Dry, I got goosebumps... You shouldn't compare genre's of one another, its like mixing my mac to my toasters, my toaster can burn toast but it certianly can't burn a cd, and it doesn't need to.
You should all check out one of my fav. bands Appleseed Cast, they are progressive rock, get the track "Fishing the sky" or "poseiden" at their record label www.deepelm.com

unplugged was the only thing i bought by them, it was their best album by far
Radiohead is a GREAT band. I am surprised that many of you did not mention Kid A as a favorite. Clearly ok computer is an excellent album (my favorites in order are Kid A, OK Computer, the Bends, Amnesiac, and then Pablo Honey). One of my favorite songs is Worrywort, which was on one of The Pyramid Song's singles. Also, Fog is a GREAT song, you've got to download it.
THe reason i brought this thread back is because they announced details of their new album being released in June. The title is "hail to the thief." Now, I love radiohead, but i don't exactly love their politics (very strange cause you know and i know their music is definitely influenced by that), but they know how to make great music. Here is a link to some info about the new album. All of the gossip says that this one will be phenomonal (they are comparing it already to OK computer, saying it could surpass its quality).
i saw both the STONE ROSES and RADIOHEAD play live in a small nightclub (300) in Milan, Italy......wow....intimate and unbelievable.....i was playing 'the bends' album non stop....along with the WEDDING PRESENT's album. ..anyhow...went to the concert expecting them to play hits....instead Thom says..."hey we've got a new album coming out....we are going to play it tonight"....the rest is history...OK computer.....wow did they take a major turn.....KID A and AMNESIAC (which were recorded at the same time) are my faves.....and I love the FLAMING LIPS, WHITE STRIPES, STEVEN MALKMUS (ex pavement), saw his show 2 nites ago.....nice set.....
So I got the new Radiohead. I've actually had it for about a month or two, but I didn't realize it wasn't coming out to the public until Jume 9th. I figured it was coming out soon or already out.
Anyway, it's really good. No big style jumps this time. Just good, high-quality music. A few songs to get stuck in the head. Reminds me of redmoon theater , but music (of course, the redmoon music is unreal, and the 'composer' is in my top two or three with radiohead. If you get a chance to hear him, take it). I really like 2+2=5 and There There. There There is like good 'ol club rock. The one before it, The Gloaming, is a pretty cool glitch-type track with a lot of reversed samples and old video game noises (the exact game is on the tip of my tongue).
Comments
nirvana was a great band...
greatest is tough though---you have the beatles, the clash, the rolling stones...etc
plus nirvana wasn't from the united kingdom, so they are lacking right there....
why are the best bands from england??
we (the states) rock for solo artist...elvis, sinatra
but the UK rocks for bands
g
Those last 5 aren't their songs.
Actually, someone is arguing that Nirvana isn't great (bitterman). Greatest ever is a silly point of discussion.

Ya wanna talk to a bitter man? Have a seance with Kurt Kobain...

Hail to the Thief info
Hopefully, they will ease me into Radiohead whenever I get around to downloading one of their albums.
