Just a question. Does the keyboard use the Smart Connector or Bluetooth?
The Smart Magic Keyboard has a USBC port on the left side hinge for power pass through. It's using the Smart Connector. I don't think it is using the USB protocol as the Smart Connector doesn't have enough pins, but power and a serial interface for keyboards and trackpads, looks like a yes.
Wish they would make the Smart Connector a USBC connector so that accessories could have more ports and slots.
The wait continues for me. No buy until miniLED and 8 GB RAM.
What is the tangible benefit to users on miniLED that makes it a requirement?
For me, watching videos in the dark. I want the blacks to be darker. To be able to move videos to the top of the display instead of behind letterboxed too.
I found the clip of Steve Job saying they would never introduce that: but why has Apple changed its mind now? Are those "tons of user testing" out the window?
I was going to say something about users preferences changing over time, but… If anything that's Jobs predicting these new keyboards; because what he says is that if we use a physical keyboard with iPads, then the most ergonomic solution is to also have a horizontal touchpad.
The iPad 1 had a companion keyboard dock for $69, which could only be used opposite to the way Steve Jobs said touch surfaces wanted to be used, and iPad physical keyboard support has always sucked for exactly the reason he gave in that video clip.
His comments about touch screen laptops based on a horizontal keyboard and a vertical screen were entirely spot on, and his now ten year old observation is still valid. As a result, a device optimized for laptop use should absolutely be mouse/touchpad first, and a device optimized for direct touch should be optimized for horizontal use without a mouse/touchpad or keyboard. That doesn't mean either device should not provide secondary input methods. Ideally, a system and its applications would be fully optimized for both, but the optimal screen element size (the size of touchable/clickable elements) for each really doesn't match. Apple really should have delivered a trackpad/keyboard combination for the iPad four or five years ago to provide good enough secondary usage of the iPad, but I guess they (in this case, the Tim Cook Apple) had to start seeing a slowdown in iPhone sales first.

The iPad Pro 3rd Gen is HOBBLED by its data transfer speed from the USB-C port.
I would buy the new one in a flash if this has been solved. I guess it hasn't as Apple have not made it a feature.
I know a lot of professional photographers/videographers disappointed that they could not use the massive 1Tb storage in the iPad Pro for transferring in their daily shoot for editing on the move and I'm with them on that. It was disappointingly slow.
Another use case imaging pro's have is on the go backup. Using an external SSD on a USB-C hub, to be able to transfer files from a camera to the external SSD for backup, and transfer data into internal memory for editing. This should be possible with two simultaneous operations.
the one thing I find interesting, it that the SoC is called the A12Z. It has 8 cores, a higher heat capacity, and the usual other features, but no other info on it. I think I can say that we all expected either an A13x, or if this came out late in the year as “expected” with the new cameras, time of flight, and cursor support as Ming predicted, likely an A14x. So this is odd. I sure want to know more about this unexpected chip.
Very curious about this as well. I was expecting a Fall update with a A14X. If I had to guess, the A12Z is a die shrink of the A12X with upgraded GPUs.
So, piece by piece, the iPad is devolving into a laptop. I thought Apple always looked to the future, not revering the past.
You’re the one that’s in the past. We are heading into the future. Hopefully one day, you’ll realize the error of your opinion and catch up with us. Or you can stay left behind.
Nice update but what others have said about the keyboard price.
Now everyone who claims that "proper trackpad support" was all they needed to use an iPad instead of a Mac can put up or shut up...since the total cost will exceed even that of a MacBook Air...surely price was never their real motivator...right? Right?
Apple needs to bring Xcode, Logic and Final Cut to iPadOS.
This is something I see often repeated but I cannot fathom why anyone would want a gimped version of either Logic or FCP.
Yeah. I’m a software dev and the last thing I want to do is ditch my larger Macs to work on a rinkydink tablet screen.
Just heard the rumor that the RAM is the same - 4GB, same as previous iPad Pro 11”. Ugh!
That would be extremely ugly. Apple has literally turned into Intel as they meter out meaningless improvement to convince you that something is worth the money.
Yeah, no, they didn’t literally turn into Intel. They’re Apple, not Intel.
And no, the continual stream of improvements are not meaningless, they’re in fact excellent. Apple ARM updates are delivering more power for less energy. I’ll be upgrading from my 10.5 ipad pro to this, no question.
Not targeting linux neckbeards interested in speeds ‘n feeds (spec porn) doesn’t make it not worth the money. But the market will decide.

I see. For a different device with a primary use case of movies in the dark (like my TV), I would require that as well. But for a generalist device I don’t expect that will be a required feature for most people.
Yeah. I’m a software dev and the last thing I want to do is ditch my larger Macs to work on a rinkydink tablet screen.
I have and use Logic Pro X on my Macs, and I don't need Logic Pro X on my iPad.
Even the 12.9" iPad Pro is too small to handle the Logic UI. It would also be a waste of time and effort to try and port the entire app to iOS. I'd rather that Apple spend their time and resources doing more important things.
If somebody wants to use Logic Pro X on the go, then they should go buy a Macbook Pro. Problem solved.

The keyboard is optional and so is the iPad.

could be a depression, I know I already am.
