Can you imagine both C.K.S International Airport in Taipei and Fairbanks in Alaska trying to ride herd over thousands of little iMacs attempting to break free! Well now they are finding their way to homes and offices across America. Kind of a heart-warming story, no?

I've got warm fuzzies. Can't wait to get home again. Concentrating in the lab is too hard when you've got a shiny new iMac at home. Already I've had 5 people come up and ask me if it came in and if they can go see it. I think I'll throw an iMac party....but the stingy part of me doesn't want the hordes to touch it!

As it seems a number of people are getting their iMacs now, I have a question. Has anyone received theirs from anywhere other than the online apple store or apple retail? There are many apple-only specialists stores out there... but I wonder if apple is giving priority to it's own stores because that is bigger profit? I was thinking that buying from a local store will help out the local economy a bit.... but if I knew it was going to add weeks to my shipment... I would not have.

p.s. thegelding, I'm not sure if I have ever heard of anyone eating fries and mayo up here in Canadia... but people do put vinegar on their fries, which may be equally wierd.

Well the Apple Store in Clarendon (Virginia) has only received about 6-7 iMacs so far, and that was days ago. They don't expect the next shipment until maybe Monday. Since I'm number 25 or so on their list I'll probably end up having to wait a full month after I placed my name on their list to get my machine. So don't get the impression that there are heaps of iMacs sitting around the Apple Stores - they're just as starved for the new iMacs as everyone else. So much for shipping in January.

maybe its a german thing then...would never argue foods with a man named Gastropod ...i thought it was mayo and something odd in canada....not that we think canadians are odd down here in the states we love our funky canadian brothers....with second city, kids in the hall, jim carey, mj fox, neil young....we can almost forgive you brian adams g

glad to see more people getting their iMacs....now i can stop feeling guilty for getting mine so quickly and just enjoy using it...have fun all....g

OK OK so some of you now have your iMacs.

Please can you let us know your original order date. Some of us would like to know how far down the list we are. I ordered mine on the 10th... Nothing yet.

    Hmm.

JW Pepper---it almost seems luck of the draw....

i ordered on 1/7/02 from apple education store with standard (free) shipping.... imac shipped on 1/29/02 (really 1/30/02 as it went to Fed Ex after hours on the 29th) and received it 2/1/02 at noon...amazingly fast with no customs hold-ups...

macintosh ordered same day (1/7/02) from the education store and his is still "being prepped"

mac's girl ordered hers much later and it is on the way (stuck a bit it seems in alaska)...

so it seems very random as to when ordered to when shipped to when received....g

Aside from the miracle that yours shipped so early, given that you ordered on 1/22, here's what the FedEx log is really telling you:

First remember that FedEx tracking always lists the LOCAL time whenever something is scanned. So your iMac was last scanned in Taiwan at 8:20 pm on 2/7 LOCAL time. It was scanned in Anchorage after having cleared customs at 6:05 pm LOCAL time on 2/7. This is the equivalent of 11:05 am on 2/8 in Taiwan.

Second thing to remember is that FedEx tracking doesn't keep up with the scanning locations in a proper sequence. Instead, when a scan shows a date and time that something happened, it places it in the existing tracking list BY SEQUENCE OF DATE AND TIME, disregarding the fact that those are meaningless if the tracking ocurred in different time zones. It's even more complicated by the fact that the planes cross the International Date Line on the way from Taiwan to Alaska, making the tracking in Alaska seem to happen before the plane left Taiwan.

The good thing is that your iMac is in Alaska, not Taiwan. So just sit back and wait for Tom Hanks to deliver it to your door!

Mayo on fries is a french thing. But of course the big french Canadian thing for fries is Poutine - fries covered in cheese curds and gravy. And Canadians do put mayo on their burgers - I thought I heard that is unusual.

yeah...it was the mayo on burgers thing...burgers get mustard, ketshup and lettuce with tomato....and i still think that mac's girl's iMac is in a bill murray/groundhog's day/twilight zone loop....

hope you get it soon mac's girl...put up photos when it does...g

While I am very much into the Outer Limits thing, Mac's Girl, the time slip is a result of the international date line between Taiwan and Alaska. You actually go back in time! Having made the trip between Tokyo and New York far more times than I care to recall, you actually arrive before you leave on a 12 hour flight and a fourteen hour time difference. Alaska is about 5 hours FURTHER from Taipei time.

You'll have to see if there are any Einstein effects, does your mac look younger than it should when it finally arrives. I am afraid I don't; probably because I lose a day everytime I go from NYC to TYO!

We again do seem in a time-warp ourselves on this board. It says all times are Eastern, but it reads 05:12 AM above my last post, but the 24-hour clock in my Manhattan place says 17:16 on 2/8/02 which used to be called Eastern Standard Time. It will mysteriously change later in the day.

    I wonder Eastern where?  <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    congrats bodhi. Isn't a gastropod a mollusk?...like a snail...kind of appropriate considering the length it's taking to get some of these orders delivered. <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

    It'll be well worth the wait. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

As far as time zones go. I learned that lesson somewhat painfully. I told my folks to pick me up from the airport a day after I arrived from Japan...YIKES. This was good though, because my friends had TP'd my apartment and rearranged my furniture as a welcome back gift. I had to clean up everything jetlagged before they got in. <img src="graemlins/surprised.gif" border="0" alt="[Surprised]" /> To bad I didn't check for the frozen underwear in the freezer. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

    congrats bodhi....

and going further off track again...

gastro--a combining form meaning, 'pertaining to the stomach or abdomen'

pod--a combining form meaning, 'of or related to the foot'

so gastropod literally means, 'stomach foot'...pertaining to how a snail moves along on it's muscular "stomach foot"

    and yes i am a nerd...g

ps..does he use that user name because he is slow, or because he is sticky.....

    or both

a gastropod is a snail and a member of the mollusk family....thegelding now takes off his mister wizard hat

Cool! thegelding must be a wizard! hrrm..... Gandalf the Grey, Saruman the White, Radagast the Brown..... and thegelding the Green?

Yeah, I choose my alias a long time ago for slowness reasons.... back then I had a 14.4 modem when the rest of the civilized world had 56 k

But my slowness has always stuck with me. For the last 4 years the only game I play is Bungie's Myth series. Everyone online recognizes me when they play with me because I take minutes to load a level while they take seconds. (My current computer is from 1997). Even this webpage takes over a minute to render, during that time my computer is completely locked up parsing the html.

As a similar example, I had researched and researched as to what car I wanted(when I could afford a car). I decided on one and ordered it at the start of October... I was told they'd have one for me the next week. In the mean time, I was bicycling to work, taking the bus was a 2 hour ride.. biking was only 40 minutes. Time passed and December came. At this point I am freeezing my fingers off biking to work, or wasting my entire day 4 hours in transit. I was very frustrated. Hoping that your car will be there in a day or two when it is actually months. When they did get a car, I had to buy a CD player with it or face more time waiting for the next car. If they had just told me that it was going to come at Christmas, it would not have been as frustrating.

In the same way(but not nearly as extreme), I wish apple would have said not to expect the iMacs until spring, instead of saying shipping in January. For example, I was recently laid off, I have no idea if I am going to be in this city in a month or two... but when I ordered I thought it'd come before I moved. It would be less frustrating, and if some people did get them in Feb then apple would be exceeding your expecations. Maybe I should just be quiet and be thankful that I can afford a nice computer like the iMac.

.. oh... and click on the link below to download a mac only networkable card game(it's free)

BY GOLLY, I THINK I'VE GOT IT!

hey, i may have figured out why some ppl's imacs are taking longer than others, regardless of when they ordered it. maybe they have separate lists-- education store, federal store, and regular store. then they fulfill a certain number of orders from each list. since the federal store probably has fewer sales than the others, my number probably came up faster. the education list is undoubtedly a little longer, and the regular list... well, it's far too long.

yep, still loving my mouse, but i often "forget" to use it. trying to ween myself off a 3-year track pad habit isnt easy.
