Common guys, you know better than to let this stuff give you a virtual hard-on. And ladies, don't let it...uh...well never mind.

...based on how Steve has over-hyped stuff in the past, is there anyone here who doubts that he would call a new LCD iMac and the G4 bumped to or over a GHz "Big, even by our standards?" Let's remember what their idea of big is (new product) vs. ours (G5 clocked well over GHz), and what "their standards" means. To me it means, always releasing slick looking but under-clocked products at big events.

Getting up to the GHz barrier alone will be enough to make Steve hypervenilate and start coughing up gigaflops all over the stage. Getting even slightly over the GHz barrier and giving everyone a slick new iMac would be "big", even by their standards *cough, cough*.

Bottom line: don't drop your skivvies in preparation for Macworld love just yet. Hype is just that until we see the goods.

This banner promises something extra-ordinary from an Apple keynote at MacWorld. A new iMac fits the bill, finally reaching 1 GHz doesn't (its only about 15%, still way behind Wintel, and MHz doesn't matter - remember?). Alternatively some radically new gadget to attach to your digital hub. This is Segway-style hype.

True enough, but Apple's well aware of the G5 hype, and frankly, most of the people who check the Apple site aren't just any old Apple consumer, but rather people who are big on Apple. Most have probably heard the G5 rumors, and many of which are the core G5 expecting geeks. So if anybody KNOW's they're pouring fuel specifically on that fire - it's Apple.

In short, this is either one of the biggest "bait-&-switches" Apple's ever pulled - in which case, the switch had better be really BIG to make up for another 6 months of G4 mediocrity ... it might be a whole new home wireless entertainment network & hardware, with remote windowing of some sort.

    OR

We're getting G5's Pro, G4 iMacs - and some other way cool mystery gadget/system - perhaps even wireless as mentioned above ... 'cause another iPod alone and minor speed bump with LCD iMacs just ain't gonna cut it. Let's face it, this time, Steve's ego's at stake.

At this point, I think the odds are a little better than 50/50 that we're probably getting G5's.

... and just in the 'nic 'o time too.

The only thing I can say is either they have the G5s or they have Osama bin Laden! Anything less is Barnum-esque

Strap a new P4 to his nutsack and do a huge Photoshop bake off against the G5.

Sorry. I should have learned not to post such offhand comments by now.

That's taking this joke a bit to far for my liking. It may be funny to you in Halifax, but here in NYC on New Years eve, I'd really rather not hear about anything to do with Bin Ladin & blowing up thankyou.

Seriously. The original comment was more than adequate to get the picture / joke...the follow-ons are more proof that MW events twist and warp our ability to reason.

I'd say the G5-o-meter is going up with the new hype from Apple...presently the needle is at about 56% and slowly creeping up. Last night the needle was at 48%. Boy what a difference a couple of hours and a new home page make.

You all are going to be VERY disappointed. I agree, Apple would think an LCD iMac (esp. with G4) and passing the GHz barrier is greater than their standards.

Hmm. Could this be another instance of Apple underestimating the expectations it generates? They 'blew it' with the iPod in that respect. Perhaps they haven't learned, or have decided that the group of people that overblow the hype that Apple generates is negligible.

Moving up the keynote a day was big.

When the Cube was introduced at MWNY, I was in the keynote. My Dad didn't really want to see the speech, so he got the expo only pass. As a result, he was one of the first people to walk into the expo at 10 AM when it opened. He saw the G4 cube and used it before anyone else. He thought it was cool, but had no idea what it was. After that, he went and found a place to get coffee.

I don't really think that Apple would move the keynote up a day just for that. So the question is this: Why is Apple having the keynote a day earlier? I think it's because Steve's keynote was rescheduled to be longer and they didn't want people who signed up for expensive workshops to miss them.

Steve's keynote being scheduled for that long also means that he obviously has more to say than usual. More time = More/Bigger announcements.

So is the hype real/justified, or is it just to keep people happy that had to rebook flights and change travel plans?

I hope they drop him from three stories with an iBook in hand to see if either survive.
