  • How to stop your LG or Samsung smart TV from tracking you

I'm also someone that doesn't let my Surveillance Smart TV connect to the internet. I'll do it initially for firmware upgrades, but after that I won't because there's never any feature benefits and I've not had any bugs that affect the the AV quality until the LG G5 (which is now resolved). My Apple TV is the only smart device worth connecting.

PS: Roku should also get a mention. They may even be worse. I couldn't find the quote, but I seem to recall that Roku's CEO admitted that they can sell their hardware so cheap (compared to a company like Apple) because they gather user data, use target ads, and sell those user metrics.

  • Trump Mobile's made-in-US iPhone 17 competitor is really made in China

The point is, that some on this forum have been attacking the president for @lying” about the phone, when in fact, up to this point? He’s said nothing. That is a false claim.
    Again:

    https://www.trump.com/media/trump-mobile-launches-a-bold-new-wireless-service

“Trump Mobile is also excited to announce it will release the “T1 Phone” in August. It is a sleek, gold smartphone engineered for performance and proudly designed and built in the United States”

That is a lie. It’s on Trump.com — which, I must assume, is the current president’s commercial website.
You said president Trump made that quote. He did not. Period.

That is the website of the trump organization which was handed off to his kids years ago.

Ah, I wasn’t aware. Yep, he still owns it, but his kids are running it since 2017. Okay. Fair point.
That's like a mob boss claiming he didn't murder anyone even though his goons were caught redhanded. The notion that Trump is licensing his name to a sham product but claiming he knows nothing about it either means he's lying or he's even more incompetent than he already presents himself.

  • Files iPadOS 26 vs iPadOS 18: Refinements & speed improvements make Files actually usable

I’m very concerned about readability. Just look at these screenshots. Everything is white, bright white, without any clear separation through the use of background colors. So far I find Liquid Glass an inconsistent mess, in comparison to what I considered a very refined UX/UI. They butchered it.
I'm currently not loving it. I'm running macOS 26 and iOS 26. So far it all seems stable and there are some new additions I like (like the dedicated Phone app), but I can't say I like the UI. In macOS toggle buttons look like they're not toggle-able (is that a word?) when they are, and CarPlay, when you're in an app, has clear side-row icons that are near invisible because automobile displays aren't as modern as smartphone displays and I lost a row of icons on the CarPlay Home Screens in one vehicle when there was already ample spacing.

None of this is a dealbreakers, but it's not a step forward, IMO.

The key here is the “fool,” without whom the entire movement would crumble.
Last I saw, a moderator here was deleting the same kind of posts for attacking politicians. but I guess it only applies to whatever side has the favorable bias. Have some consistency.
The "side" is the same side most of the entire world sides with.  Sorry you're not on the majority side.
Not the majority on this forum. But in the country? See the recent election.
    Okay, *looks at recent election*

Total number of people in America: 340 million

People that voted for Trump in 2024: 77 million

People that voted for Trump in 2020: 74 million

People that voted for Trump in 2016: 62 million
You can't count the total population, as a bunch of those aren't even eligible to vote (due to being underage, and to systematic disenfranchisement of convicted criminals in many states). You also cannot count those who didn't vote, since NOT voting automatically means tacit agreement with whatever the outcome is.

Total number of votes in 2024: 156 million.

Trump got 49.4% of total votes cast.
You absolutely can count the total populus when someone claims that the majority of the country supports a candidate.

In one sentence you mention "systematic disenfranchisement of convicted criminals in many states" and in the next you state "NOT voting automatically means tacit agreement with whatever the outcome is". Additionally, I know of a lot of people who can't vote due to age that didn't want a felon, rapist, and conman in office. How about the 3.2 million Americans whose permanent residence is Puerto Rico? How can you say that everyone of those people were in "tacit agreement" with Trump winning the election?

Do you not recall that FL changed the voting rights of previously convicted felons, but then Ron DeSantis then targeted and arrested many of those people who voted legally to scare off would-be Democratic voters in the future? I can understand why they would then not want to risk more jail time or even legal fees, and it has nothing to do with not wanting to vote.

How about the voting is set up to disenfranchise those that would not likely vote for a Republican? Things like gerrymandering to simply making voting so difficult that hard working people with families simply can't get the time to cast a vote?

Voting should be fair and balanced but it's unbalanced from the EC down.

  • Apple Smart Home Hub release pushed back to 2026

If this is a device you are eagerly looking forward, I am happy for you. Having more choices is always a good thing. I do want you to eventually have your wish come true.

I am disappointed that this is a priority for Apple seemingly to the exclusion of other projects. I can think of many other things I would prefer to see - things like an ATV with an OTA tuner (ATSC3?); a new Airport with an onboard Apple branded VPN; updated Beats Fit Pro (those wingtips actually work well). None of these things seems to be even remotely on the radar for Apple. Heck, even something as simple as a hardware cover on my iPhone camera lenses (a little slide device in the case) would be welcome. That the smart home stuff is all reliant on AI that doesn't seem to work is all the more disappointing. To me. YMMV.

    1) I think you are making a logical fallacy by assuming that this is a priority that causes other projects not to be worked on. Apple has 164k employees, according to Wikipedia. Sure, most probably aren't HW or SW engineers, but they surely have more than enough to have parallel projects in the works.

From my PoV, the fact that this HomeHub rumor keeps getting pushed back indicates that it's not that much of a priority for Apple. I can't imagine that the revenue and profits will be high unless they do something drastic. I say that because the current consumer-grade stuff isn't that expensive, and the commercial-grade stuff that requires someone with skills to install and configure properly, like Control4 or josh.ai.

I have been looking forward to Apple's HomeHub because I don't feel there's a great middle ground option at this point. This segment is still far too kludgy, IMO. I doubt Apple has solved that, but I'm still hopeful and the very least there are probably innovations that will make it into other companies to advance this market segment down the road. I honestly think we're 10–20 years away from seeing great smart home setups that doesn't require a certified technician to setup or and configure.

    2) As much I'd like to see a lot of those HW changes, especially Apple returning with great mesh routers, I don't think they have any of those sitting on the back burner waiting for engineers to be free.

  • Brother HL-L3280CDW color laser printer review: Pennies, not dollars, per page

    cia said:
I had an ink jet printer for years, it worked ok, but as time went on I was printing less and less, and it seemed like every time I did want to finally print something, the ink had dried up, or was blotched or whatever.  The cost to replace was high, and then next time I needed it, it had dried up again.  So since I never print photos anymore I got a cheap B&W HP laser printer off Amazon Renewed for $75.  It came with a "starter" toner cartridge that is only good for a few pages, and then you have to buy a normal one.  That was 8 years ago, & I'm still on the "starter" toner cartridge. Thing prints fine every time I (rarely) do need something printed.

If you are like me and rarely need to print, check out renewed printers, they are super cheap.  Be sure to check if the one you are getting is MacOS compatible, most are but you never know.
That mirrors my switch from ink jet to laser. It was a great printers but I printed so infrequently it dried up. I've had some luck helping others save ink jet printers by doing the head cleaning (sometimes up to 3 to 5 times to get it working again), but for me that didn't do anything and I didn't want to spend over $100 for ink that may simply dry up again. Ironically I'm now printing a lot these days for various reasons.

  • Blood oxygen sensing shows no sign of returning to Apple Watch any time soon

The cost to license it is trivial yet Apple would rather screw over their customers than pay it.  While charging us premium prices for everything.
Where does one draw the line against bad patent claims? Anecdotally, I'd say Apple is "screwing over" their own Watch sales by not letting Massimo get away with this.

  • Steve Jobs' daughter's $6.7M wedding draws high-profile guests

Interestingly enough, Eve nor her siblings are set to inherit any of her late father's wealth. Her mother, Laurene Powell Jobs, has publicly stated that she plans to use the fortune for philanthropic endeavors, rather than passing it on to her children.

They aren't getting the entire amount but that doesn't mean they aren't going to be getting more than enough money to live very comfortably for the rest of their lives. For instance, Bill Gates is only giving $10M to each of his children. I would imagine that Jobs will do something similar to make sure the children of Steve are taken care of.

Jason momma seems kinda played out at this point. Kinda like Pedro pascal.
