  • But would things like .dll extensions, etc., that make windows so terrible be a problem with a x86 version of OS X? Assuming there was a version of OS X for x86 hardware, format the HD, get rid of windows, install OS X, if X has all the drivers y…
  • It's a SCSI CD-R so Disc Burn is a no, but I'll try Toast 5, thank you. -'pert
  • Another solution for people desiring a laptop and a powerful desktop is to buy a low end tower and an iBook, together, the price would be about the same as a high end Powerbook. Then you have a ultra-portable iBook and a SUPER-powerful G4 tower (…
  • I suggest waiting until the next revision and using that time to save a little more cash and buying the top of the line. The next rev. will probably be 800 MHz and 1 GHz. This is what I'm doing. I'm waiting for a 1 GHz Powerbook with a Supe…
  • satchmo- I think your wish is possible and reasonable except for the superdrive. I expect the new iBook to be 13" (don't know about widescreen) with an 800 MHz G3 for $1499.
  • Instead of new hardware, Apple gives us a picture of Jimmy Carter building houses! Unbelievable...
  • I was speaking to the whole market in general. Obviously a couple people here and there will pay $3500 for a 6 month old product that has not seen even a price reduction let alone a spec improvement, but I can't believe that sales are going as we…
  • Well, they are going to stay stocked up until Apple releases new model because nobody is going to buy at this point. The least Apple could do would be to lower the prices significantly, think $1999 and $2499, however, even at these prices, I don'…
  • Just a note: MOSR (www.mosr.com) has a new article about the Powerook. Let the bashing begin... -'pert
  • Sorry, I guess I made a mistake. Way to jump down my throat Dave Hagan... [ 09-27-2002: Message edited by: Rupert ]
  • CompUSA has marked the Powerbooks as EOL. They are priced at $2499.97 and $3199.97. The .97 at the end means they are end-of-lifed. Good sign...
  • The general consensus has been that the iBook will get the 32 MB Radeon 7500 in it's next revision. When that will happen, however, is anyone's guess. Last time, the iBook was revised 1 month after the Powerbook, so perhaps if the Powerbook is…
  • How about October/April. Instead of October/January-February... That is what the last 2 revisions were, Oct. 01 and April 02. We might be over thinking this a bit. October 02 and April 03, that makes sense. -Rupert
  • Well, that shows that the October update will probably bring the current high end to the low end (perhaps standard RAM/HD will change) and a new high end, probably 1 GHz, keeping the current price points of $2499 and $3199 for retail outlets. If …
  • I'm voting (and hoping) for a incremental update in mid-October and a more comprehensive update in the January-February time frame. How about lowering the prices back to the 550/667 points. Particularly if there is in fact an October update, the…

  • Why do you dislike 5:4 so much? Wouldn't 1280x1024 be preferrable to 1280x960 (4:3), as it's more pixels left to right? I think 1280x1024 on the 17" Apple LCD looks spectacular. -'pert
  • The idea should be to reduce the cost of the Superdrive to the point where the savings by not including one would be negligible.
  • I agree with Junkyard Dawg that if you don't want one you shouldn't have to have one (added cost) etc. However, I think it should be available on the towers for $1599. I know the iMac is $1899 w/superdrive, but that also includes the LCD which is…
