  • HBO Max will have iPhone, iPad, & Apple TV apps at launch

HBO Mac's website didn't include any information about whether I could watch HBO on my iMac. They included a very long page on privacy, https://www.hbomax.com/privacy/, and a Do No Sell My Personal Information link at the bottom of the page but it only works for customers in California. I guess California is the only state trying to force companies to respect customer privacy. Makes you wonder about the other 49. HBO/WarnerMedia collects a ton of personal information and of course uses it to spam you with tons of ads.

As for AppleTV in-app purchases, will I be able to use my Apple Pay account so HBO doesn't get my real information? They demand my address and email address, which they really have no reason to collect as long as I pay them for their service.

  • Apple unveils new iPad Pro with 3D scanner, trackpad support

I found the clip of Steve Job saying they would never introduce that: but why has Apple changed its mind now? Are those "tons of user testing" out the window?
Introduce what? I don't understand what your point is. There is a keyboard/mouse for vertical use. Touch for horizontal.rob53 said:
The LiDAR scanner is what interests me the most. I understand it's being sold for AR but will it function as a 3D scanner for CAD input? Will I be able to use it to scan a 3D object, convert it to a wireframe, and use it for 3D printing?
I hope. The 3D printer market is about to explode if that's the case.
Not really. The 3D data from a scanner is messy and needs thorough manual cleanup to be printed.
I saw the animation/video on Apple's website but that doesn't mean a third-party app couldn't take advantage of the LiDAR scanning system and produce something that could be ray traced and converted into a wireframe. It's all up to Apple to decide what this system is allowed to do--and not do.

I easily found an engineering/com article that discussed 3D Scanning: Understanding the Differences In LIDAR, Photogrammetry and Infrared Techniques. They talk about the use of handheld scanners to measure small objects. It all depends on how Apple's LiDAR system has been designed and what its capabilities are. I am hoping they're for more than just AR use although AR is becoming a huge market but so is 3D printing. Why buy a handheld scanner when your iPad already has one and potentially could also have all the software required to create 3D models for printing.

  • New Intel chip flaw threatens encryption, but Macs are safe

FileVault protection on older Macs is useless? What do you say other than "Yikes"?
It's an issue, but not a giant day-to-day one. The timing attack is non-trivial to execute, is targeted, and if, like the article says, you maintain physical security of your Mac you'll be fine.
You don’t need FileVault if you’re protecting your equipment using physical security so your excuse for intel’s failure doesn’t hold water. FileVault is supposed to protect a Mac where physical security can’t be maintained so this revelation means intel, again, has failed to produce a secure CPU.

  • New Microsoft Office iOS app unifies Excel, PowerPoint, Word

This app doesn't have an iPadOS counterpart. It's iOS only.
Typical for Microsoft to include an app optimized for the iPhone and list it for iPad. I'm surprised Apple allowed them to do this.

  • AccountEdge abandons Catalina compatibility, customers looking for alternatives

Not that it should make any difference but Priority Software is headquartered in Israel. It appears all of its management team (see website) is Israeli. I have to wonder if their refusal to upgrade the Mac version has anything to do with possible security issues implemented in Catalina. When I was working for a US government contractor, we had to get special permission to buy anything manufactured in Israel, mainly because of security issues.
