  • Apple's iPhone assembly automation goal has hit some bumps in the road

It surely makes it easier to "friend shore" assembly operations out of China, and the sooner, the better. Now if the bulk of the rest of Apple's supply chain in China is shifted to other "friendly" Asian countries, Apple might survive were China to actually attempt an invasion of Taiwan.

If China does invade Taiwan, Apple can probably kiss goodbye to chips made by TSMC. Then what happens?
Hence why TSMC is being paid to build plants in the U.S., EU, and Japan. Why take a chance?

It's actually worse than that. Expect a global dislocation in trade as the bulk of trade travels through South Asia, including vital energy and foodstuffs that China relies on. Yeah, not good, but Xi is focussed on himself, not China.

Hey Siri, delete the words 'altruistic' and 'privacy' from company mission statement.
But keep the phrase ‘engage to influence .’
How has Apple positively influenced China's policies so far? They've had a decade or three to do so.

Outside of China, they make a lot of noise about privacy and "protecting the user." Not a peep IN China or directed to China's leadership. Is there anything specific you can think of? Understanding the word "heel" is all the Apple engagement that's been obvious. Or even hinted at.

So no, It's always about the money IMHO.

Anyway, AppleTV+ cannot be a streaming service in China despite the way this has been framed. Under Chinese law, Apple isn't allowed to operate their own video-streaming services in China.

The best they can do is license some content, obviously very limited and select programming. China Mobile would never chance upsetting any Chinese authorities, nor would Apple (even in their US programming) so it would never be the "full Apple TV+ service" would it?

    Quite tone-deaf on Apple's part.

As China’s Internet Disappears, ‘We Lose Parts of Our Collective Memory’

The number of Chinese websites is shrinking and posts are being removed and censored, stoking fears about what happens when history is erased.

  • This is the best look yet at Apple's immersive video cameras

It looks like the camera body is from RED, which makes some awesome gear. That'd make sense. You can barely make out the name is the first show above the dual-lense add-on. The question is did RED work with Apple to modify the unit, or did Apple modify it themselves. This is a good sign for mass adoption though, RED is well respected in the industry.
Nikon purchased RED a short time ago, for those that were not aware of that.

  • Apple and OpenAI allegedly reach deal to bring ChatGPT functionality to iOS 18

    For anyone interested, here'a a link to a recent Stanford University AI report;

It's on the order of 500 pages, for those that are into a deep dive...

  • Microsoft's Copilot PC and the M3 Mac killer myth

A typical AppleInsider rant article. The first reply to this article was someone posting the Surface performance and findings. It would have been better and more useful to include elements like that for a more balanced, open-minded report, rather than just being a sour, juvenile attempt at creating the ‘good guys’ and ‘villain’.

Qualcomm and Microsoft did a great job. Great to see some competition, at last! It’ll force Apple to take a good look at their pricing strategy and be a bit more bold and daring with their software rollouts.

The whole “photo copying” argument is a bit weak. Apple has been copying a lot over the years and it’s just how the industry works, how competition works. I see a lot of differences and unique product positioning there. It’s not wrong to compliment the brand you don’t use or like.
"Photo Copying" is  better labeled "diffusion" and it's the reason that Apple won't fall behind, including in AI, and Windows will maintain its hold, even as Arm replaces some x86 hardware. What is happening right now is the hype of the moment as Windows begins to catch up in hardware to Apple.

Good for them, but AI will also drive Apple sales.
