  • How Apple addressed the 'beautygate' effect in iOS 12.1

The quality of flagship phone cameras has improved so much that the tech media will obsess over the smallest details which imo would not be noticed by 99% of smartphone users.

I know it’s just me, but given all the issues recently I wish Apple would slow down and not release products until they’re sure there are no problems. Of course it’s strange that this issue with the X didn’t show up for over a year.
    All the issues?
Any commercial product manufactured in tens of millions will have defective units, no matter how long you delay production.
That's true.   But equally true is that Apple is designing and building high performance, cutting edge sports cars rather than basic, time tested Toyota Corolla's.   With that in mind, I find their reliability record to be extraordinary.
I due tend to think that Apple is trying to become the Mercedes/Toyota/Lexus of personal electronics (and with that picking up big profits formats.    Classic design like MB with reliability like Toyota/Lexus (or the Toyota of old because I think they are slipping).     That's why they aren't for many people and why the new MacMini's start off at a higher price point and really go up.

I’m not denying that customers can have problems with Apple products. It is a fact that repair services have existed since the beginning of personal tech.

But imo anti-Apple comments, such as about quality, should compare products between different OEMs. To me the best measure quality between OEMs is to look at customer surveys.

    - Apple has some of the highest rated smartphones.

    - Apple has some of the highest rated laptops/desktops.

    * As for profits; my approach is again to compare Apple with other companies; Google makes plenty of money mining user data to send ads. And Microsoft also makes lots of money with a high profit to income ratio.

  • Comparing the redesigned 11-inch iPad Pro versus 2017's 10.5-inch model

No headphone jack = another idiotic attack on usefulness and another insult to consumers
    * Here is a common use situation; using a headphone jack and charging the iPad at the same time.
    - I would be OK with the new iPad Pro if it had two USB-C ports (so one for a headphone dongle and the other for a charging cable).
    - But needing a USB-C hub just to use headphones and charge the iPad is ridiculous.

  • Even with all the improvements to the iPad Pro, it still can't replace my Mac yet

Who said that it had to replace your MacBook Pro?

Seems to be an assumption festering around here that because it's as fast as a laptop then Apple has to start sticking all sorts of crap into it so that it becomes a laptop.

Not entirely sure that's the endgame here.
Philosophically, Apple should let people use an iPad to their fullest creativity. For a lot of people, it will be a better device to use than a MBP.

The complaints aren’t about turning an iPad into laptop, even though it may sound like it. It’s about enabling the iPad to be just as functional as a PC device like a macOS computer. That is, let people compute with it.

It doesn’t mean iOS will be turned into macOS in look and feel, but it does mean their functionality should be the same: shell access, easier file organization, accessories, more display space, more ports, more functionality. The UX should scale from novice users to expert users.

People are essentially banging on Apple’s door to let them use the device in more varied ways. It behooves Apple to enable it.
Kind of like a Microsoft Surface...
    Not really.
    - Microsoft starting with Windows 8 has a hybrid OS; a complete mouse GUI one for the desktop and a very limited tablet finger touch UI. The Surface is essentially a laptop (mouse desktop OS) with some finger touch features tacked on.
    - The iPad by contrast is a full finger touch OS. What is being asked is that the function of the finger touch based iOS be extended through hardware (2 USB-C ports) and software (overlapping window support). But with these changes the iPad/iOS would remain a touch based UI.

  • Should you upgrade to Apple's redesigned 2018 iPad Pro?

If the new iPad Pros had two USBC ports (like the MacBook Air), then I would definitely consider it as a laptop replacement.
Otherwise without a headphone jack and only one port, I’d rather get a laptop for that amount of money.
