  • Apple offers fix to avoid Swiss scrutiny over Apple Pay's interruption of rival payment ap...

Honestly this was more of a bug than anything malicious - any rfid panel would bring up apple pay. E.g. putting a phone down on cardio equipment with rfid tags would cause the same panel to appear.

This wasn't lost on apple, which is why in iOS11 CoreNFC was added and in iOS 12 apple started to give third party developers access to the RFID unit directly.

  • Australia's largest bank finally caves, announces imminent Apple Pay support

    arthurba said:
First Germany and now Australia.  Apple Pay is a wonderfully secure design. Really glad to see it succeeding in the marketplace.
ApplePay did launch in Australia several years ago - but this announcement is particularly meaningful as this is Australia's largest bank, and was seen as the primary instigator in trying to obtain additional concessions from Apple, which would have been anti-consumer but helpful to their profitability. (For reference Australia's banks are the world's most profitable, taking nearly 3% of the local GDP.)

  • IDC: Apple Watch Series 4 accounted for less than 20 percent of Apple Watch sales in Q3

Wow, if my business relied on market metrics from IDC. I'd just save the money and roll dice instead. Even a cursory review of their reporting shows glaring, if not entirely comical errors.

Like putting devices like the Mi Band 3 in the same category as the Apple Watch or indeed any smart watch:
    - The device still lacks basic features that were mature in the Gen 0 Apple Watch.
    - They are in vastly different price brackets
    - Shipped units of a low-RRP, cheap to manufacture plastic band has no bearings on market share whatsoever, nor the smartwatch market.
    - The item is frequently a gift with purchase

IDC might as well put Razor scooters in the same category as luxury vehicles. To satiate market demand for people to move around on wheels.  :D

These glaring faults don't even scratch the surface of how IDC actually have no realistic ability to estimate both watch sales figures, units or model share.

  • Sending unsolicited nudes via AirDrop might soon be illegal in NYC

AirDrop is not prime for exploitation because the default setting is contacts only. So no one is going to get an unexpected transfer request without actually having manually switched it over to "Everyone"

Secondly AirDrop keeps a log file of all activities - including the sender's information (even if the recipient does not accept the transfer). Law enforcement can use the basic console app to pull up the details necessary to identify the perpetrator's phone.

  • Apple loses bid for new trial in VirnetX case, appeal still possible

    *ahem East Texas*

So when this actually goes to a real court - the final appeal will either be a very large reduction in damages, no finding of infringement or the patents will be struck down entirely.

Why hasn't the USA done anything about the fact that East Texas courts are continuously finding in opposition to everywhere else in the country. It's an embarrassment.
