Apple released the iMac 27 years ago and it's better than ever
One thing I feel was missed from the new iMacs is the Apple logo on the front. It would have given so much reason for the bezel. At the same time, I do feel Apple could have used this as an opportunity to reintroduce the rainbow Apple logo, though using it as a way to distinguish the non-pro lines. Wishful thinking I know. -
Apple now calls itself a gaming company fighting with Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo
If Apple sees themselves as a gaming company, then there are a few things they need to do:
- Be game developer friendly, in attitude.
- Make it easy to port games to the platform.
- Further improve Rosetta 2 to make performance of Intel games well on the M1 processors.
- Sponsor or provide code contributions to common frameworks used by game developers.
- Demonstrate that games can run at the best settings on an average current generation Mac, otherwise they aren't really competing in any meaningful way.
I am sure there are plenty of other things they can do too.
Just looking at the history of console gaming consoles we can see what business and technical decisions created challenges for games developers. Modern Vintage Gamer covers quite a few aspects here. -
Despite potshots, Intel & Samsung want to make Apple Silicon
Maybe having a subsidiary that purely focuses on fabricating, like TSMC, could be beneficial to Intel itself? This would mean the parent company would focus purely on designing the chips and then simply be a primary client to the subsidiary. The subsidiary in the meantime would have the mandate of becoming the best chip fabricator out there, like TSMC, and with the ability to manufacture for anyone would have the incentive to invest early in new technology. Also by having them separate, then hopefully internal politics wouldn’t compromise working with other partners. .There are probably a lot of details I am missing, but right now something clearly needs to change. As for Samsung, they may be one company by name, but like a number of Asian corporations operate like many companies under one roof. This means while you are competing with one division, you are nicely doing business with another. -
2022 Mac Pro said to use Intel Ice Lake Xeon W-3300 CPU
I suspect if they are doing this it’s because many businesses are conservative and already have a heavy investment in software that is optimised for thar chipset. We need to consider the cost of new software and the reality is that many software houses won’t have a finished stable port of their applications. The real question is whether they will be offering an ARM based Mac Pro at the same time? -
FTC pledges to take on unlawful restrictions on right-to-repair
Once companies are forced to consider “right to repair” as a business requirement, that they can’t push back against, they’ll probably look for ways to make it work.Businesses will typically push back against changes that will cost them money, but once they can’t push back, then they’ll find ways to make it economical to themselves.Hopefully the right to repair will also help reduce certified repair costs, but that is probably wishful thinking?
